In this thesis we designed the vision system to inspect the defect of a back light unit of plat panel display device. The vision system is divided into hardware and inspection algorithm of defect. Hardware components consist of illumination part, robot-arm controller part and image-acquisition part. Illumination part is made of acrylic panel for light diffusion and five 36W FPL's(Fluorescent Parallel Lamp) and electronic ballast with low frequency harmonics. The CCD(Charge-Coupled Device) camera of image-acquisition part is able to acquire the bright image by the light coming from lamp. The image-acquisition part is composed of CCD camera and frame grabber. The robot-arm controller part has a role to let the CCD camera move to the desired position. To take inspections of surface images of a flat panel display it can be controlled and located every nook and comer. Images obtained by robot-arm and image-acquisition board are saved on the hard-disk through windows programming and are tested whether there are defects by using the image processing algorithms.

A simple computer vision technology to measure the middle-ranged depth with a mono camera and a plain mirror is proposed. The proposed system is structured with the rotating mirror in front of the fixed mono camera. In contrast to the previous stereo vision system in which the disparity of the closer object is larger than that of the distant object, the pixel movement caused by the rotating mirror is bigger for the pixels of the distant object in the proposed system. Being inspired by such distinguished feature in the proposed system, the principle of the depth measurement based on the relation of the pixel movement and the distance of object is investigated. Also, the factors to influence the precision of the measurement are analysed. The benefits of the proposed system are low price and less chance of occlusion. The robustness for practical usage is an additional benefit of the proposed vision system.

This paper deals with a development of night vision imaging system(NVIS) for the KO-1 aircraft. In the modern combat, NVIS has a tendency to be applied for night peculiar mission and pilot mission maximization. KO-1 aircraft, which was the first domestic applied NVIS, is forward air control acquired information of day/night enemy(foe) site and moving of enemy for low altitude flight. We have successfully finished a developmental requirement/criterion, development of system, and construction of test and evaluation through development of NVIS for the KO-1 aircraft. KO-1 aircraft is acquired timely initial operational capability.

This paper presents the pose estimation of a small UAV utilizing visual information from low cost cameras installed indoor. To overcome the limitation of the outside flight experiment, the indoor flight test environment based on multi-camera systems is proposed. Computer vision algorithms for the proposed system include camera calibration, color marker detection, and pose estimation. The well-known extended Kalman filter is used to obtain an accurate position and pose estimation for the small UAV. This paper finishes with several experiment results illustrating the performance and properties of the proposed vision-based indoor flight test environment.

Image processing and computer vision algorithms are gaining larger concern in a variety of application areas such as robotics and man-machine interaction. Vision allows the development of flexible, intelligent, and less intrusive approaches than most of the other sensor systems. In this work, we determine the location and orientation of a mobile robot which is crucial for performing its tasks. In order to be able to operate in real time there is a need to speed up different vision routines. Therefore, we present and evaluate a method for introducing parallelism into the multiple non-overlapping camera pose estimation algorithm proposed in [1]. In this algorithm the problem has been solved in real time using multiple non-overlapping cameras and the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Four cameras arranged in two back-to-back pairs are put on the platform of a moving robot. An important benefit of using multiple cameras for robot pose estimation is the capability of resolving vision uncertainties such as the bas-relief ambiguity. The proposed method is based on algorithmic skeletons for low, medium and high levels of parallelization. The analysis shows that the use of a multiprocessor system enhances the system performance by about 87%. In addition, the proposed design is scalable, which is necaccery in this application where the number of features changes repeatedly.
In this paper, we propose the artificial vision system using human visual information processing and wavelet. Artificial vision system may be used for the visually impaired person and the machine recognition system. In this paper, we have constructed the information compression process to ganglion cells from the human retina. And we have reconstructed the primary visual information using recovery process to primary visual cortex from ganglion. Primary visual information is constructed by wavelet transformation using a high frequency and low frequency response. In the experiment, we used the faces database of AT&T. And the proposed method was able to improve the accuracy of face recognition considerably. And it was verified through experiments.

Accurate heading information is crucial for the navigation of intelligent vehicles. In outdoor environments, GPS is usually used for the navigation of vehicles. However, in GPS-denied environments such as dense building areas, tunnels, underground areas and indoor environments, non-GPS solutions are required. Yaw-rates from a single gyro sensor could be one of the solutions. In dealing with gyro sensors, the drift problem should be resolved. HDR (Heuristic Drift Reduction) can reduce the average heading error in straight line movement. However, it shows rather large errors in some moving environments, especially along curved lines. This paper presents a method called VDR (Vision-based Drift Reduction), a system which uses a low-cost vision sensor as compensation for HDR errors.

Recently, there has been an increasing demand for computer-vision based inspection and/or measurement system as a part of factory automation equipment. Existing manual inspection method can inspect only specific samples and has low measuring accuracy as well as it increases working time. Thus, in order to improve the objectivity and reproducibility, computer-aided analysis method is needed. In this paper, front and side profile inspection and/or data transfer system are developed using computer-vision during the inspection process on three kinds of pipes coming from a forming line. Straight line and circle are extracted from profiles obtained from vision using Laplace operator. To reduce inspection time, Hough Transform is used with clustering method for straight line detection and the center points and diameters of inner and outer circle are found to determine eccentricity and whether good or bad. Also, an inspection system has been built that each pipe's data and images of good/bad test are stored as files and transferred to the server so that the center can manage them.

This research aims to design on an automatic machine vision system to replace eye inspection of alternator spool which is one of the key automotive parts. The alternator spool, plastic extrusion part would have various defects like unfinished, crack and burr. Through the design failure examples the optimized fast machine vision system will be designed to inspect all spools also focuses on the low cost machine for the middle sized company as 2'nd automotive supplier. 3-dimensional design softwares of Pro-Engineer & CATIA were used and the system were built based on the design. The system will contribute to satisfy the cycle time and can inspect each part in an absolutely accurate method, which is sufficient for industrial applications.

This paper presents vision-based techniques for underwater landmark detection, map-based localization, and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) in structured underwater environments. A variety of underwater tasks require an underwater robot to be able to successfully perform autonomous navigation, but the available sensors for accurate localization are limited. A vision sensor among the available sensors is very useful for performing short range tasks, in spite of harsh underwater conditions including low visibility, noise, and large areas of featureless topography. To overcome these problems and to a utilize vision sensor for underwater localization, we propose a novel vision-based object detection technique to be applied to MCL (Monte Carlo Localization) and EKF (Extended Kalman Filter)-based SLAM algorithms. In the image processing step, a weighted correlation coefficient-based template matching and color-based image segmentation method are proposed to improve the conventional approach. In the localization step, in order to apply the landmark detection results to MCL and EKF-SLAM, dead-reckoning information and landmark detection results are used for prediction and update phases, respectively. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated by experiments with an underwater robot platform in an indoor water tank and the results are discussed.
