  • The potential hazards resulting from a low-velocity impact (bird-strike, tool drop, runway debris, etc.) on aircraft structures, such as engine nacelle or a leading edges, has been a long-term concern to the aircraft industry. Certification authorities require that exposed aircraft components must be tested to prove their capability to withstand low-velocity impact without suffering critical damage. In most of the past research studies unloaded specimens have been used for impact tests, however, in reality it is much more likely that a composite structure is exposed to a certain stress state when it is being impacted, which can have a significant effect on the impact performance. And the radiated impact sound induced by impact is analyzed for the damage detection evaluation. In this study, an investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effect in-plane loading on the impact force and sound of composite laminates numerically.

  • An analysis method for rubber toughened PVC is suggested to evaluate critical dynamic strain energy release rates($G_c$) from the Charpy impact energy measurements. An instrumented Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture parameters in addition to total fracture energies and maximum critical loads. The dynamic stress intensity factor $K_{Id}$ was computed for varying amounts of rubber contents from the obtained maximum critical loads and also toughening effects were investigated as well. The fracture surfaces produced under low velocity impact fur PVC/MBS composites were investigated by SEM. The results show that MBS rubber is very effective reinforcement material for toughening PVC.C.

  • In this paper, advance angle control is described to drive an industrial low voltage SRM(Switched reluctance motor) for a forklift truck by changing velocity and torque. The high current SRM is designed and its phase resistance and phase inductance are very low to inject high current into the phase windings. In this reason, the current has to be built up in the increasing phase inductance part as soon as possible. Therefore, the phase switch must be turned on before the phase inductance increases, and this angle is called as the advance angle. We analyze the changes of the advance angle as its torque and velocity are changed in the real SRM driving experiment. And we propose the way to improve the SRM performance by using the advance angle control.

  • The marine diesel engine have been widely applied with a mechanical hydraulic governor to control the ship speed for long time. But it was recently very difficult for the mechanical hydraulic governor to control the speed of engine under the condition of low speed and low load because of jiggling by rough fluctuation of rotating torque and hunting by dead time of diesel engine. In order to analyze the speed control system the transfer function was converted from z to w transformation. The author proposed velocity control system with feedback loop by PID controller in order to stabilize for unstable area. The influence of dead time was discussed by Nichols chart and unit step response curve. It was confirmed through computer simulation that the performance improvement of a mechanical hydraulic governor can be obtained by PID controller.

  • The Charpy and Izod impact tests are the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effects of high impulse loads on polymeric materials. An analysis method for rubber toughened PVC is suggested to evaluated critical dynamic strain energy release rates(G$_c$) from the Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture parameters in additional to total fracture energies and maximum critical loads. The dynamic stress intensity factor KID was computed for varying amounts of rubber contents from the obtain maximum critical loads and also toughening effects were investigated as well. The fracture surfaces produced under low velocity impact for PVC/MBS composites were investigated by SEM. • Dynamic motion difference between normal subjects and low-back pain (LBP) patients has been investigated in terms of kinematic variables such as range of motion, velocity and acceleration of the back and hip. Ten healthy subjects and ten LBP patients were recruited in this study. Electro-goniometer such as Lumbar Motion Monitor and Hip Monitor have been used for quantitative measurement of the trunk motion during repetitive flexion and extension for ten seconds. Results indicated that the velocity and acceleration of the back and hip were important parameters to quantitatively identify LBP patients. The consistency of cyclic trunk motion and the relationship between the back and hip were measured in terms of Variance Ratio and Phase Angle in order to accurately assess the motion characteristics of LBP patients. In particular, the hip motion has been proven to be a very important factor in describing the kinematics of damaged lower back. The functional evaluation technique suggested in this study will be a tool to assist physicians for an accurate diagnosis and timely rehabilitation along with current image diagnosis techniques.

  • The present paper is devoted to the modeling based on an averaging approach for microchannel heat sinks. Firstly, analytic solutions for velocity and temperature distributions for low-aspect-ratio microchannel heat sinks are presented by using the averaging approach. When the aspect ratio of the microchannel is smaller than 1, analytic solutions accurately evaluate thermal resistances of heat sinks while the previous model cannot predict thermal resistances. Secondly, asymptotic solutions for velocity and temperature distributions at low-aspect-ratio limit and at high-aspect-ratio limit are presented by using the scale analysis. Asymptotic solutions are very simple, but shown to predict thermal resistances accurately.
