  • Transcranial doppler ultrasonography (TCD) applies a low frequency of 2 MHz to measure the blood flow velocity and waveform within the skull. Medical technologists at several hospitals are conducting these examinations, and education is being imparted in many schools and academic societies. However, the skill of the tester is of utmost importance when performing TCD. Technicians who are conducting the procedure for the first time have trouble locating the blood vessels, and some experienced personnel are worried because too many blood vessels are present. Since this procedure does not directly look at and measure blood vessels, there are several limitations and difficulties. Therefore, this study aims to provide some help by introducing precautions and suggestions for TCD technicians conducting the test.

  • Commercial catalyst (Cu-Zn/$Al_2O_3$, Johnson Matthey Co., 83-3 Catalyst) was applied to the hydrogen production by steam reforming of methanol in the micro-channel reactor (MCR). The steam reforming of methanol was tested over Cu-Zn catalyst at temperatures in the range of 200 and 300$^{\circ}C$, the catalyst size of 0.05${\sim}$2.2 mm, the space velocity of 3,000${\sim}$10,000 $hr^{-1}$ in a fixed bed continuous flow reactor. The conversion of methanol and the yield $H_2$ preferred high temperatures and low space velocities, and had optimal results with the particle size of 0.35 mm. Based on the results from experiments with fixed bed reactor, two types of MCR, boat bed and stacked bed MCRs, were studied. The stacked bed type MCR showed better methanol conversion compared with the boat type one.

  • Downhole seismic method is very economic and easy of operation because it uses only one borehole and simple surface source to obtain the shear wave velocity ($V_s$) profile of a site. Even though it is widely used by the site investigation companies, universities and institutes, however, the $V_s$ profile determined by downhole seismic method has often low reliability due to employment of wrong combinations of field losing equipment and interpretation method and deficiency of experience. Round robin test was performed and testing equipment and procedure were compared. Adequate downhole seismic testing equipment was constructed based on the comparison and verification study of the round robin test. The data acquisition and software interpretation were also developed for automation and quick test in field. Finally, the effectiveness and applicability were verified through the field test by using the constructed testing system.

  • In August 2007, coastal upwelling occurred off the east coast of Korea, and vertical water temperature and salinity data were obtained from a real-time surface ocean buoy. Based on the time series observation data, a vertical sound velocity structure was calculated before, during, and after the occurrence of the coastal upwelling, and how the coastal upwelling affects the sound propagation and detection environment through acoustic modeling considering the horizontal scale and actual seabed topography. As a result of comparing and analyzing the low-frequency (500 Hz) sound transmission loss and the target detection range by depth using the parabolic equation model, it was analyzed that if coastal upwelling occurs, a detection gain of up to about 10 dB can be expected. In addition, through this study, it was confirmed that the characteristics of sound propagation can be greatly changed even in a short period of about 2 to 3 days before and after coastal upwelling.

  • In the recent years, the use of agricultural waste in green cement mortar and concrete production has attracted considerable attention because of potential saving in the large areas of landfills and potential enhancement on the performance of mortar. In this research, microparticles of palm oil fuel ash (POFA) obtained from a multistage thermal and mechanical treatment processes of raw POFA originating from palm oil mill was utilized as a pozzolanic material to produce high-performance cement mortar (HPCM). POFA was used as a partial replacement material to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) at replacement levels of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40% by volume. Sand with particle size smaller than 300 ㎛ was used to enhance the performance of the HPCM. The HPCM mixes were tested for workability, compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), porosity and absorption. The results portray that the incorporation of micro POFA in HPCMs led to a slight reduction in the compressive strength. At 40% replacement level, the compressive strength was 87.4 MPa at 28 days which is suitable for many high strength applications. Although adding POFA to the cement mixtures harmed the absorption and porosity, those properties were very low at 3.4% and 11.5% respectively at a 40% POFA replacement ratio and after 28 days of curing. The HPCM mixtures containing POFA exhibited greater increase in strength and UPV as well as greater reduction in absorption and porosity than the control OPC mortar from 7 to 28 days of curing age, as a result of the pozzolanic reaction of POFA. Micro POFA with finely graded sand resulted in a dense and high strength cement mortar due to the pozzolanic reaction and increased packing effect. Therefore, it is demonstrated that the POFA could be used with high replacement ratios as a pozzolanic material to produce HPCM.

  • Space nuclear reactors are becoming popular in deep space exploration owing to their advantages of high-power density and stability. Following the fourth-generation nuclear reactor technology, a conceptual design of the dual drum-controlled space molten salt reactor (D2-SMSR) is proposed. The reactor concept uses molten salt as fuel and heat pipes for cooling. A new reactivity control strategy that combines control drums and safety drums was adopted. Critical physical characteristics such as neutron energy spectrum, neutron flux distribution, power distribution and burnup depth were calculated. Flow and heat transfer characteristics such as natural convection, velocity and temperature distribution of the D2-SMSR under low gravity conditions were analyzed. The reactivity control effect of the dual-drums strategy was evaluated. Results showed that the D2-SMSR with a fast spectrum could operate for 10 years at the full power of 40 kWth. The D2-SMSR has a high heat transfer coefficient between molten salt and heat pipe, which means that the core has a good heat-exchange performance. The new reactivity control strategy can achieve shutdown with one safety drum or three control drums, ensuring high-security standards. The present study can provide a theoretical reference for the design of space nuclear reactors.

  • Downhole method is considered as giving a little unreliable Vs profile when the signal to noise ratio(S/N) is low and the travel time information is erroneous although it is economical and ease of operation. Direct method has been applied for obtaining adequate result in this case. But it is difficult to determine optimum result by using direct method which is subjective and considering straight ray path. Therefore, in this paper, Mean Refracted Ray Path Method(MRM) was proposed, which is automated and considering refracted ray path. Artificial travel time data adding some travel time error was generated by forward modeling based on Snell's Law and travel time data was also obtained from numerical signal traces using FEM modelling. Using these travel time data, reliability of MRM was verified in the manner of comparing the results determined by MRM with the model. Finally, proposed method was applied to the real field data and it was considered as improved method for obtaining the optimum result in downhole seismic method.

  • The purpose of present study is to examine the effect of guideway characteristics on runnability of low and medium speed maglev vehicle. Dynamic governing equation for 2-dof vehicle and optimal feedback control scheme are developed. And then the effect of vehicle speed, rail roughness, guideway deflection, continuity of spans, each span length on dynamic response of the UTM-01 maglev vehicle are investigated. From the numerical simulation, it is found that the gap between bogie and guideway does not increase greatly within design velocity of the vehicle. The response of vehicle are mostly affected by the guideway deflection rather than rail roughness. As a result of the present study, the runnability of maglev vehicle can be improved by reducing the maximum deflection of guideway and adopting the continuous girder systems.

  • Arteriovenous fistula flow dysfunction is the leading cause of vascular access thrombosis and loss in patients undergoing hemodialysis. However, data regarding the influence of access flow rate measurements on the long-term outcomes of access are limited. This study aims to identify accesses at a high risk of thrombosis and loss among patients undergoing hemodialysis by measuring the access flow rate and exploring an optimal threshold value for predicting future access thrombosis. We enrolled 220 patients with arteriovenous fistula undergoing hemodialysis. The primary outcome was the occurrence of access thrombosis. Access flow rates were measured monthly using the ultrasound dilution method and were averaged using all measurements from patients with patent access. In patients experienced access thrombosis, those immediately before the thrombosis were selected. Using these data, we calculated the access flow rate threshold for thrombosis occurrence by analyzing the receiver operating characteristic curve, and the patients were divided into two groups according to whether access flow rates were higher or lower than 400 mL/min. During a median follow-up period of 3.1 years, 4,510 access flows were measured (median measurements per patient, 33 times; interquartile range, 11-54). A total of 65 access thromboses and 19 abandonments were observed. Access thrombosis and loss were higher in the lowflow group than in the high-flow group. This study revealed that low access flow rates are strongly associated with access thrombosis occurrence and subsequent loss of arteriovenous fistulas in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

  • Purpose : The aim of this study was to identify the influence of transient isokinetic exercise on cardiac autonomic modulation and muscle properties in healthy male subjects. Methods : Twenty-eight healthy males underwent isokinetic exercise of both knee joints using a Biodex systems 3 isokinetic dynamometer with an angular velocity of 60 °/sec. The changes in activity of the autonomic nervous system, as determined by heart rate variability (HRV), and in muscle properties were evaluated at three times: pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and 10 min post-exercise. Results : The time domain analysis of HRV revealed significant changes in the beat count and mean and minimal heart rate (HR) measured at pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and 10 min post-exercise (p<.001). The beat count and mean HR were markedly increased immediately post-exercise compared to pre-exercise, but then significantly decreased at 10 min post-exercise (p<.001). All parameters of the frequency domain were significantly altered by isokinetic exercise (p<.01). The low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) ratio, as an index for the sympathovagal balance, was elevated by exercise and remained at a similarly high level at 10 min post-exercise (p<.01). The muscle properties of rectus femoris were changed as follows: Muscle tone and stiffness were significantly increased between pre-exercise and immediately post-exercise (p<.001), and between pre-exercise and at 10 min post-exercise (p<.001). Whereas, the elasticity showed no significant change. Conclusion : These results demonstrated that transient isokinetic exercise could induce changes in cardiac autonomic control and muscle properties. In particular, up-regulation of LF/HF ratio after exercise signifies thus enhanced sympathetic modulation by isokinetic exercise. Therefore, it is needed to understand the cardiovascular risks that may arise during isokinetic exercise for providing the basic evidence to establish appropriate isokinetic exercise protocols as effective rehabilitation exercises.
