  • In this study, the operating characteristics of a small-scale pulse detonation engine (PDE) were investigated experimentally for application as a small thruster and an igniter. The PDE was constructed using commercial gas tubes with an inner diameter of 4.22 mm. The operating and detonation propagation characteristics of the PDE were investigated over the ranges of equivalence ratios and operating frequencies. Measured detonation speed was close to 10% of the theoretical CJ values at 1 Hz and 5 Hz conditions. However, unstable propagation characteristics were shown at 20 Hz and lean conditions, where the velocity deficit was increased by 20~62%.

  • Rh doped Ni and Co catalysts, Rh-M/$CeO_2$(20 wt %)-$Al_2O_3$ (0.2 wt % of Rh; M = Ni or Co, 20 wt %) were synthesized to produce hydrogen via autothermal reforming (ATR) of commercial gasoline at $700^{\circ}C$ under the conditions of a S/C ratio of 2.0, an O/C ratio of 0.84, and a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of $20,000h^{-1}$. The Rh-Ni/$CeO_2$(20 wt %)-$Al_2O_3$ catalyst (1) exhibited excellent activities, with $H_2$ and ($H_2$+CO) yields of 2.04 and 2.58 mol/mol C, respectively. In addition, this catalyst proved to be highly stable over 100 h without catalyst deactivation, as evidenced by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) and elemental analyses. Compared to 1, Rh-Co/$CeO_2$(20 wt %)-$Al_2O_3$ catalyst (2) exhibited relatively low stability, and its activity decreased after 57 h. In line with this observation, elemental analyses confirmed that nearly no carbon species were formed at 1 while carbon deposits (10 wt %) were found at 2 following the reaction, which suggests that carbon coking is the main process for catalyst deactivation.

  • Drying characteristic data for peeled ginseng were obtained to determine dominant drying factors and fitted with five selected drying models and an empirical model. Among air temperature, relative humidity and diameter of ginseng root, drying air temperature was found to be the most influencing factor on drying rate. Drying velocity appeared faster as the drying temperature increased but its effect was less at high temperature than at low temperature. Quality change during the drying process did not occur except when relative humidity was 75fb. At high relative humidity, skin color of ginseng was turned to light brown. Approximate-Diffusion and the Empirical model for drying were in a good agreement with experimental data. The models are as follows; $.$ Approximate-Diffusion model MR = A$.$exe(-k$.$1) A = 1.72 + 0.407 In(D) - 0.0000963T3 - 0.358 In(RH) + 0.0000945 RH2 B= 1.01 + 0.0195RH - 0.O0518D2 + 0.0708 In(T) - 0.492 In(RHI-D.0000933RH2$.$Empirical model MR= Cl + Cs$.$In(t) Cl= 1.14+0.382 In(D)-0.00008477a-0.139 In(RH)+0.0000664RH2 Cs=0.440-0.0224 In(D)-0.193 In(T)+0.0000464T2-0.00000771RH2

  • This study which was conducted on male tennis player on one hand(OH) & two hand(TH) backhand stroke and how both motion differed on low extremity movement with each feature analyzed in detail, the result as follow. The motion of TH based on resultant velocity, appeared to be a higher than OH, which was important variable in determining the ball speed. Contrary to TH where the player minimized the motion in the lower body and finalized a stroke through the turn of the trunk as if sticking the ball closed to the body, OH was carried out such that the player appeared to chase the ball. Whereas in OH, the knee joint extension moment was not found to be larger than TH, the opposite result came out for abduction moment and internal rotation moment. In the case of hip joint, consisted of extension, abduction and internal rotation moment, the outcome emerged to be greater for TH with conspicuous difference in abduction moment. Flection moment for TH overwhelmed in TH though both adduction and external rotation moment brought about similar outcome for both strokes.

  • This study investigated the morphological differences of P. ostreatus grown in the artificial environmental conditions such as humidity, temperature, ventilation, and watering. Oyster mushroom, which was cultivated on artificial environmental condition, was shown to have different morphology of fruitbodies. The optimum $CO_2$ concentration for good morphology of P.ostreatus was 0.3%. But most fruitbody showed the morphologically low qualities in more than 0.5% of $CO_2$ concentration. In the humidity in excess of 80% at $13{\sim}16^{\circ}C$, the best morphology of P. ostreatus was investigated. The growth of fruitbodies of P. ostreatus in the ventilation system was good at the wind velocity ranging from $0.2{\sim}0.5$ fpms and expouring type. In other conditions, P. ostreatus generally showed the morphology closing to malformation.

  • Membrane distillation (MD) is a separation process which higher vapor pressure components are evaporated in mixed liquid solution through hydrophobic membrane with 0.1 or $0.5{\mu}m$ pore size. In this study, direct contact membrane distillation process for hollow fiber module were interpreted numerically using the "COMSOL Multiphysics" software. The variables for the system were temperatures and flow rates of lumen and shell side solutions. The permeate flux increased from 1.0 to $3.8L/m^2{\cdot}hr$ as temperature of the feed solution for lumen increased from 30 to $50^{\circ}C$. However the effect of shell solution temperature on permeate flux was relatively low. Also, the optimum velocity of lumen feed was obtained at 0.15 m/s ($Re_L=135$) by considering MD permeate flux as well as operating pressure loss.

  • Tonic smooth muscle exhibit the latch phenomenon: high force at low myosin regulatory light chains (MRLC) phosphorylation, shortening velocity (Vo), and energy consumption. However, the kinetics of MRLC phosphorylation and cellular activation in phasic smooth muscle are unknown. The present study was to determine whether $Ca^{2+}$-stimulated MRLC phosphorylation could suffice to explain the agonist- or high $K^+$-induced contraction in a fast, phasic smooth muscle. We measured myoplasmic [$Ca^{2+}$], MRLC phosphorylation, half-time after step-shortening (a measure of Vo) and contractile stress in rabbit urinary bladder strips. High $K^+$-induced contractions were phasic at both $22^{\circ}C$ and $37^{\circ}C$: myoplasmic [$Ca^{2+}$], MRLC phosphorylation, 1/half-time, and contractile stress increased transiently and then all decreased to intermediate values. Carbachol (CCh)-induced contractions exhibited latch at $37^{\circ}C$: stress was maintained at high levels despite decreasing myoplasmic [$Ca^{2+}$], MRLC phosphorylation, and 1/half-time. At $22^{\circ}C$ CCh induced sustained elevations in all parameters. 1/half-time depended on both myoplasmic [$Ca^{2+}$] and MRLC phosphorylation. The steady-state dependence of stress on MRLC phosphorylation was very steep at $37^{\circ}C$ in the CCh- or $K^+$-depolarized tissue and reduced temperature flattend the dependence of stress on MRLC phosphorylation compared to $37^{\circ}C$. These data suggest that phasic smooth muscle also exhibits latch behavior and latch is less prominent at lower temperature.

  • An Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) for estimation of the attitude and rate of a spacecraft using only magnetometer vector measurement is developed. The attitude dynamics used in the estimation is the nonlinear Euler's rotational equation which is augmented with the quaternion kinematics to construct a process model. The filter is designed for small satellite in low Earth orbit, so the disturbance torques include gravity-gradient torque, magnetic disturbance torque, and aerodynamic drag torque. The magnetometer measurements are simulated based on time-varying position of the spacecraft. The filter has been tested not only in the standby mode but also in the detumbling mode. Two types of actuators have been modeled and applied in the simulation. The PD controller is used for the two types of actuators (reaction wheels and thrusters) to detumble the spacecraft. The estimation error converged to within 5 deg for attitude and 0.1 deg/s for rate respectively when the two types of actuators were used. A joint state parameter estimation has been tested and the effect of the process noise covariance on the parameter estimation has been indicated. Also, Monte-Carlo simulations have been performed to test the capability of the filter to converge with the initial conditions sampled from a uniform distribution. Finally, the UKF performance has been compared to that of the EKF and it demonstrates that UKF slightly outperforms EKF. The developed algorithm can be applied to any type of small satellites that are actuated by magnetic torquers, reaction wheels or thrusters with a capability of magnetometer vector measurements for attitude and rate estimation.

  • We present GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer) far (FUV) and near (NUV) ultraviolet imaging of 34 nearby early-type galaxies from the SAURON representative sample of 48 E/S0 galaxies, all of which have ground-based optical imaging from the MDM Observatory. The surface brightness profiles of nine galaxies (~26 per cent) show regions with blue UV-optical colours suggesting recent star formation. Five of these (~15 per cent) show blue integrated UV-optical colours that set them aside in the NUV integrated colour-magnitude relation. These are objects with either exceptionally intense and localised NUV fluxes or blue UV-optical colours throughout. They also have other properties confirming they have had recent star formation, in particular Hbeta absorption higher than expected for a quiescent population and a higher CO detection rate. This suggests that residual star formation is more common in early-type galaxies than we are used to believe. NUV-blue galaxies are generally drawn from the lower stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_e <200 km/s) and thus lower dynamical mass part of the sample. We have also constructed the first UV Fundamental Planes and show that NUV blue galaxies bias the slopes and increase the scatters. If they are eliminated the fits get closer to expectations from the virial theorem. Although our analysis is based on a limited sample, it seems that a dominant fraction of the tilt and scatter of the UV Fundamental Planes is due to the presence of young stars in preferentially low-mass early-type galaxies.

  • Korean red ginseng (KRG) has been shown to enhance endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation in experimental animals; however, little is known about its pharmacological effects on vascular stiffness in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial was carried out to determine whether KRG has beneficial effects on arterial stiffness, cardiovascular risk factors such as plasma lipid profiles and blood pressure (BP), and Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) activity. Twenty patients (mean age, 62.5 years) with stable angina pectoris were given KRG (2.7 g/day) and a placebo alternatively for 10 weeks. Blood biochemical analysis and pulse wave velocity (PWV) recording were performed on day 0 and after the completion of each treatment. ROCK activity was assessed based on the level of phospho-$Thr^{853}$ in the myosin-binding subunit of myosin light chain phosphatase, determined by Western blot analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. KRG significantly decreased the systolic BP, brachial ankle PWV, and heart femoral PWV in the patients (all p<0.05), but did not significantly alter the serum lipid profiles, including triglycerides and total, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. The ROCK activity tended to decrease (p=0.068) following KRG treatment. The placebo did not significantly alter any of the variables. In conclusion, KRG decreased systolic BP and arterial stiffness, probably via the inhibition of ROCK activity, in patients with CAD, but had a neutral effect on serum lipid profiles. Our data suggest that KRG has a therapeutic effect on CAD.
