Sensory Inputs to Upper Cervical Spinal Neurons Projecting to Midbrain in Cats

  • The present study was primarily carried out to characterize the properties of the spinomesencephalic tract (SMT) neurons that project from the upper cervical spinal segments to the midbrain. It was also investigated whether these neurons received convergent afferent inputs from other sources in addition to cervical inputs. Extracellular single unit recordings were made from neurons antidromically activated by stimulation of midbrain. Recording sites were located in lamina $I{\sim}VIII\;of\;C1{\sim}C3$ segments of spinal cord. Receptive field (RF) and response properties to mechanical stimulation were studied in 71 SMT neurons. Response profiles were classified into six groups: complex (Comp, n=9), wide dynamic range (WDR, n=16), low threshold (LT, n=5), high threshold (HT, n=6), deep/tap (Deep, n=10), and non- responsive (NR, n=25). Distributions of stimulation and recording sites were not significantly different between SMT groups classified upon their locations and/or response profiles. Mean conduction velocity of SMT neurons was $16.7{\pm}1.28\;m/sec$. Conduction velocities of SMTs recorded in superficial dorsal horn (SDH, n=15) were significantly slower than those of SMTs recorded in deep dorsal horn (DDH, n=18), lateral reticulated area (LRA, n=21), and intermediate zone and ventral horn (IZ/VH, n=15). Somatic RFs for SMTs in LRA and IZ/VH were significantly larger than those in SDH and DDH. Five SMT units (4 Comps and 1 HT) had inhibitory somatic RFs. About half (25/46) of SMT units have their RFs over trigeminal dermatome. Excitabilities of 5/12 cells and 9/13 cells were modulated by stimulation of ipsilateral phrenic nerve and vagus nerve, respectively. These results suggest that upper cervical SMT neurons are heterogenous in their function by showing a wide range of variety in location within the spinal gray matter, in response profile, and in convergent afferent input.

  • This study was purposed to elucidate the migration phenomenon of fluoride from the chitinous sections into the muscle flesh of the frozen krill during thawing. The fluoride content ratio between chitinous sections and muscle flesh in the frozen krill was 94.8 : 5.2. Among the several thawing methods used, migration velocity of fluoride was the highest in the krill thawed with microwave and the lowest in the krill thawed at low temperature $(4^{\circ}C)$. The migrated amount of fluoride after thawing was various depended upon the thawing methods, and the increased amount during thawing was 2-5 times higher than Initial amount before thawing.

Correlation between Arterial Stiffness and Physiological Parameters (동맥경화도와 생리학적 변수들 간의 상관관계)

  • Arterial stiffness(AS) is an important pathologic state of vascular injury. This study was carried out to elucidate the effect of physiological variables on brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity(BAPWV), index of AS. Four hundred adults(volunteers) participated in this study. Body indices, biochemical, cardiac and inflammatory markers, and right(Rt)- and left(Lt)-BAPWV were measured. Body mass index(BMI), Rt- and Lt-BAPWV, glucose, triglyceride, alkaline phosphatase(ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase(GGT), creatinine, uric acid, troponin-I(TNI), NT-proBNP and high sensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP) levels were higher than the reference value of each variable. Rt- and Lt-BAPWV were directly correlated with age, body weight, BMI, glucose, ketone, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, ALP, GGT, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, lipoprotein(a), apolipoprotein-B, blood urea nitrogen, heart rate, TNI, creatine kinase, CK-MB, lactic dehydrogenase, myoglobin, hs-CRP, lipase, reumatoid factor, fibrinogen and D-dimer (P<0.05, P<0.01, P<0.001 or P<0.000, respectively), but inversely associated with total bilirubin, uric acid, apolipoprotein-A1 and GFR (P<0.05). These observations suggest that a variety of physiological variables may influence BAPWV, resulting in increased risk or prevention of cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular attacks. Therefore, physiological variables affecting BAPWV should be regularly controlled.

Simulation of nonstationary wind in one-spatial dimension with time-varying coherence by wavenumber-frequency spectrum and application to transmission line

  • Practical non-synoptic fluctuating wind often exhibits nonstationary features and should be modeled as nonstationary random processes. Generally, the coherence function of the fluctuating wind field has time-varying characteristics. Some studies have shown that there is a big difference between the fluctuating wind field of the coherent function model with and without time variability. Therefore, it is of significance to simulate nonstationary fluctuating wind field with time-varying coherent function. However, current studies on the numerical simulation of nonstationary fluctuating wind field with time-varying coherence are very limited, and the proposed approaches are usually based on the traditional spectral representation method with low simulation efficiency. Especially, for the simulation of multi-variable wind field of large span structures such as transmission tower-line, not only the simulation is inefficient but also the matrix decomposition may have singularity problem. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct the numerical simulation of nonstationary fluctuating wind field in one-spatial dimension with time-varying coherence based on the wavenumber-frequency spectrum. The simulated multivariable nonstationary wind field with time-varying coherence is transformed into one-dimensional nonstationary random waves in the simulated spatial domain, and the simulation by wavenumber frequency spectrum is derived. So, the proposed simulation method can avoid the complicated Cholesky decomposition. Then, the proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to decompose the time-space dependent evolutionary power spectral density and the Fourier transform of time-varying coherent function, simultaneously, so that the two-dimensional Fast Fourier transform can be applied to further improve the simulation efficiency. Finally, the proposed method is applied to simulate the longitudinal nonstationary fluctuating wind velocity field along the transmission line to illustrate its performances.

  • The stratified flow can be seen in the oil and gas pipelines as well as pipelines related to ship's fluid machineries. Numerous theories and correlations have also been proposed in the past for the prediction of stratified flow in horizontal or slightly inclined pipe. The previous researches are mostly about the effects of physical properties, viscosity, phases densities and pipe geometries on the stratified flow. Very few study outcomes exist on the effect of gravity magnitude and large slop angle of pipe inclinations on the occurring condition of stratified flow. In this study, therefore, analytical procedures were conducted about the effect of both the change in the gravity magnitude and pipe inclinations on the stratified flow occurring conditions. From the analytical results, it was found that stratified flow occurred at the vertical upward inclination and at very low liquid phase flowrates in 0.17g and 0.33g conditions.

Determining minimum analysis conditions of scale ratio change to evaluate modal damping ratio in long-span bridge

  • Damping ratio and frequency have influence on dynamic serviceability or instability such as vortex-induced vibration and displacement amplification due to earthquake and critical flutter velocity, and it is thus important to make determination of damping ratio and frequency accurate. As bridges are getting longer, small scale model test considering similitude law must be conducted to evaluate damping ratio and frequency. Analysis conditions modified by similitude law are applied to experimental test considering different scale ratios. Generally, Nyquist frequency condition based on natural frequency modified by similitude law has been used to determine sampling rate for different scale ratios, and total time length has been determined by users arbitrarily or by considering similitude law with respect to time for different scale ratios. However, Nyquist frequency condition is not suitable for multimode system with noisy signals. In addition, there is no specified criteria for determination of total time length. Those analysis conditions severely affect accuracy of damping ratio. The focus of this study is made on the determination of minimum analysis conditions for different scale ratios. Influence of signal to noise ratio is studied according to the level of noise level. Free initial value problem is proposed to resolve the condition that is difficult to know original initial value for free vibration. Ambient and free vibration tests were used to analyze the dynamic properties of a system using data collected from tests with a two degree-of-freedom section model and performed on full bridge 3D models of cable stayed bridges. The free decay is estimated with the stochastic subspace identification method that uses displacement data to measure damping ratios under noisy conditions, and the iterative least squares method that adopts low pass filtering and fourth order central differencing. Reasonable results were yielded in numerical and experimental tests.

A Study on NOx Reduction Mechanism in a Closed Vessel with Opposed Dual Pre-chambers (대향 부연소실이 있는 밀폐연소실 내의 $NO_x$ 저감기구에 대한 연구)

  • It is well known that NOx formation has a strong dependence on the maximum temperature and correspondingly with the maximum chamber pressure of a closed combustion system. However, in a case of impinging-jet-flame (IJF hereafter) combustion with opposed dual pre-chambers, low $NO_x$ formation with high pressure could be achieved, but its mechanism has not been clearly understood so far. In this study, a three-dimensional analysis is adopted to resolve time-variant local properties that might indicate the mechanism of IJF combustion. Numerical results are verified by comparing them with experiments. The IJF combustion in a vessel with no pre-chamber, with single pre-chamber, and with dual pre-chambers is studied. The orifice diameter and the volumetric ratio of pre-chamber are used as geometric parameters. The effects of main-chamber ignition delay time and combustion time of main-chamber, orifice exit velocity, orifice exit temperature, turbulent kinetic energy of main-chamber and spatial distribution of temperature in the latter stage of combustion are investigated. A longer main-chamber ignition delay and a shorter main-chamber combustion time suppress the formation of high temperature region with respect to mean temperature, which consequently results in less NO production.

In Vitro Culture Following Purfication of Mouse Spermatogenic Cells (생쥐 정자세포의 분리와 체외 배양에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to establish the in vitro short-term culture system of developing male germ cells by purifing germ cells of various stages. The decapulated testicular cells were incubated with collagenase (lmg/ml) and try psin (2.5mg/ml) in HBSS. After separating male germ cell, the separated germ cells were stained with heamatoxylin/eosin and determined developing stages under light microscopy. The purity of pachtene spermatocytes a and round spermatid were 85%, respectively. Yield of total male germ cells was highly variable between individuals, with a mean value of 3.5 to 4.5 ${\times}$ 10$^7$ cells/testis. Viability of the cell was over 97% after separation. In DMEM medium, the optimal cell number for culture is approximately 1 x 10$^5$ cells/dish, but low cell den-sities than 1 ${\times}$ 10$^5$ cell/dish showed a decreased cell viability. Furthermore, about :36.8% of pac-hytene cells was successfully cultured for 6 days and some of cells were developed to secondary spermatids and round spermatids. Therefore, our data suggested that this culture conditions will be utilize as a feasible tools to produce tran-sgenic livestock using techniques such as intrac-ytoplasmic injection and cell fusion.

  • Study population was described at the previously published paper(23). Body Mass Index of 10751, 5th grade students from nation-wide were calculated . From this distribution lowest 10% and highest 10% were selected as group 1 and group 5, respectively. In this paper, between group 1 and group 5 anthropometric data, demographic data and other health related factors were compared. 1) Using Japanese criteria for obesity, the prevalence for obesity at 5 th grade was 5.8% at nation wide and 7.8% at urban area. 2) The proportion of students who skipped breakfasts everyday was 5.8% of whole student surveyed and 8.4% for group 5. The proportion of students who took medicine for health was 29.4% for group and 22.5% for group 5. 3) The students who are at group 5 had larger height and weight velocity than other groups. Group 5 had large increase of BMI by increasing grade, but group 1 had almost no change. 4) In physical fitness examination, group 3 who mean BMI was in the highest class than other groups 5 was in low class.

A Case of Cauda Equina Syndrome in Early-Onset Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy Clinically Similar to Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Type 1

  • To present a case of cauda equina syndrome (CES) caused by chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) which seemed clinically similar to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type1 (CMT1). CIDP is an immune-mediated polyneuropathy, either progressive or relapsing-remitting. It is a non-hereditary disorder characterized by symmetrical motor and sensory deficits. Rarely, spinal nerve roots can be involved, leading to CES by hypertrophic cauda equina. A 34-year-old man presented with low back pain, radicular pain, bilateral lower-extremity weakness, urinary incontinence, and constipation. He had had musculoskeletal deformities, such as hammertoes and pes cavus, since age 10. Lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging showed diffuse thickening of the cauda equina. Electrophysiological testing showed increased distal latency, conduction blocks, temporal dispersion, and severe nerve conduction velocity slowing (3 m/s). We were not able to find genetic mutations at the PMP 22, MPZ, PRX, and EGR2 genes. The pathologic findings of the sural nerve biopsy revealed thinly myelinated nerve fibers with Schwann cells proliferation. We performed a decompressive laminectomy, intravenous IgG (IV-IgG) and oral steroid. At 1 week after surgery, most of his symptoms showed marked improvements except foot deformities. There was no relapse or aggravation of disease for 3 years. We diagnosed the case as an early-onset CIDP with cauda equine syndrome, whose initial clinical findings were similar to those of CMT1, and successfully managed with decompressive laminectomy, IV-IgG and oral steroid.
