Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) shows great potential for low $NO_x$ emission but is hampered by the problem of no direct method to control the combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable easily, especially at lower and higher engine load. This paper presents a method to achieve diesel-fueled HCCI combustion, which involves directly injecting diesel fuel into the cylinder before the piston arrives at top dead center in the exhaust stroke and adjusting the valve overlap duration to trap more high temperature residual gas in the cylinder. The combustion stability of diesel-fueled HCCI combustion and the effects of engine load, speed, and valve overlap on it are the main points of investigation. The results show that: diesel-fueled HCCI combustion has two-stage heat release rate (low temperature and high temperature heat release) and very low $NO_x$ emission, combustion stability of the HCCI engine is worse at lower load because of misfire and at higher load because of knock, the increase in engine speed aids combustion stability at lower load because the heat loss is reduced, and increasing negative valve overlap can increase in-cylinder temperature which aids combustion stability at lower load but harms it at higher load.
Mathematical modeling of combustion characteristics in HVOF thermal spray processes was carried out on the basis of equilibrium chemistry. The main objective of this work was the development of a computation code which allows to determine chemical composition of combustion products, adiabatic flame temperature, thermodynamic and transport properties. The free energy minimization method was employed with the descent Newton-Raphson technique for numerical solution of systems of nonlinear thermochemical equations. Adiabatic flame temperature was calculated by using a Newton#s iterative method incorporating the computation module of chemical composition. The performance of this code was verified by comparing computational results with data obtained by ChemKin code and in the literature. Comparisons between the calculated and measured flame temperatures showed a deviation less than 2%. It was observed that adiabatic flame temperature augments with increase in combustion pressure; the influence was significant in the region of low pressure but becomes weaker and weaker with increase in pressure. Relationships of adiabatic flame temperature, dissociation ratio and combustion pressure were also analyzed.

This study researched on the effect of HP/LP-EGR system to improve fuel consumption of Low Temperature Combustion Engine. Firstly, low temperature combustion engine with HP/LP-EGR system was established using 6.0L wastegate turbocharger HDDI engine. And suppliable EGR rate of the engine was proven to be enough to realize stable low temperature combustion. Then, optimum operating strategy was founded to develop fuel consumption of the engine. Control parameters were HP/LP-EGR valve and IPCV(Intake Pressure Control Valve) duty. Experiments method was that characteristics of the engine were measured and analyzed according to HP/LP-EGR strategies while EGR rate was fixed. Operating range for the strategy were divided into three parts, low load for low temperature combustion, high load for conventional diesel combustion, and transient condition. Finally, with the above strategy of this study, BSFC of the engine was improved about 2% compared to the base engine, and emission level, NOx and PM, met Tier4Final emission regulation.
Diesel low temperature combustion (LTC) is the concept where fuel is burned at a low temperature oxidation regime so that $NO_x$ and particulate matters (PM) can simultaneously be reduced. There are two ways to realize low temperature combustion in compression ignition engines. One is to supply a large amount of EGR gas combined with advanced fuel injection timing. The other is to use a moderate level of EGR with fuel injection at near TDC which is generally called Modulated kinetics (MK) method. In this study, the effects of fuel injection pressure on performance and emissions of a single cylinder engine were evaluated using the latter approach. The engine test results show that MK operations were successfully achieved over a range of with 950 to 1050 bar in injection pressure with 16% $O_2$ concentration, and $NO_x$ and PM were significantly suppressed at the same time. In addition, with an increase in fuel injection pressure, the levels of smoke, THC and CO were decreased while $NO_x$ emissions were increased. Moreover, as fuel injection timing retarded to TDC, more THC and CO emissions were generated, but smoke and $NO_x$ were decreased.

According to the regulation on the environment and fuel efficiency is becoming strict, many experiments are conducted to improve efficiency and emission in internal combustion engines. LTC (Low temperature combustion) technology is a promised solution for low emissions but there are a few barriers for the commercial engine. This paper includes optimization that applies LTC method to heavy duty diesel engine. Adequate LTC was applied to low and middle load as adaptability in heavy duty diesel engine, and optimization focused on reduction of fuel consumption was proceeded at high load. Through this research, strategy for practical use of LTC was selected, and fuel consumption has improved on the condition that satisfies the emission regulation at systematic viewpoint.

[$CO_2$] is a well-known greenhouse gas, which is the major source of global warming. Many researchers have studied to reduce $CO_2$ emission in combustion processes. The central method of low $CO_2$ emission is Oxygen/CxHy combustion. Theoretically Oxygen/CxHy combustion only produces $CO_2\;and\;H_2O$ and allows convenient recovery of $CO_2$. The combustion characteristics, flame stability, composition in the flame zone and temperature profile were studied experimentally for various compositions of oxidant by substituting $CO_2\;for\;N_2$ with the constant $O_2$ concentration. Results showed that flame became unstable due to the high heat capacity, low transport rate and strong radiation effect of $CO_2$ in comparison with those of $N_2$. The reaction zone was quenched and broadened, as the ratio of $CO_2\;to\;N_2$ was increased. The emission of NOx in flue gas decreased due to the decreased temperature of the reaction zone. As the conversion ratio of $CO_2\;to\;N_2$ was increased, the emission of CO and the higher temperature zone increased due to decrease of reaction rate by the a quenching effect.
Numerical investigations on air staging and fuel staging were carried out with a newly designed coaxial cyclone combustor, which uses the method of two stage coal combustion composed of pre-combustor and main combustor. The pre-combustor with a high air/fuel ratio is designed to supply gas at high temperature to the main combustor. To avoid local high temperature region in this process, secondary air is injected in the downstream. Together with the burned gas supplied from the pre-combustor and the preheated air directly injected into main combustor, coals supplied through the main burner react rapidly at a low air/fuel ratio. Strong swirling motion of cyclone combustor keeps the wall temperature high, which makes slagging combustion possible. Alaska, US coal is used for calculations. Predictions were made for various coal flow rates in the main combustor for fuel staging and for the various flow rate of secondary air in the pre-combustor for air staging. In-scattering angles are also chosen as a variable to increase residence times of coal particles. Temperature fields and particle trajectories for various conditions are described. Predicted temperature variations at the wall of the combustor are compared with corresponding experimental data and show a similar trend. The in-scattering angle of 20° is recommended to increase the combustion efficiency in the main chamber.

A basic experimental study was conducted in order to find the optimum combustion control technology to decrease the thermal NO$_{x}$, by applying the catalytic combustion method with natural gas. NO$_{x}$ emission increased with increasing space velocity due to temperature rising in the furnace. In order to overcome the low resistance to high temperature, secondary air was supplied to the CST combustor. The following secondary fuel formed combustible mixture in part, which resulted in steep increase of the exiting temperature of the 2nd catalyst bed. It led to the more generator of NO$_{x}$, 30∼60% of the 1 st catalyst bed. It might be due to the potential increase of thermal NO$_{x}$.
Lean premix combustion is a best method in low $NO_x$ gas turbine combustor and we must know the characteristics of NO emission in high temperature and pressure condition in premix flame. Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the NO emission characteristics by adopting a counterflow as a model problem using detailed chemical kinetics. Methane $(CH_4)$ was used as a test fuel which is the main fuel of natural gas. The tested parameters were stretch rate, equivalence ratio, initial temperature, and pressure in premix flame. Results showed that NO emission was high in low stretch rate, near stoichiometric equivalence ratio, high initial temperature, and high pressure. Also, the pressure effect was sensitive in high temperature condition.
The concept of lean-premixed combustion in gas turbine combustor operation has become a standard in recent years as an effective means to meet stringent enviromental standards on NOx emissions. The combustion characteristics of 75 kW class lean premixed combustor were investigated at the conditions of high temperature and ambient pressure. The exit temperature and emissions of CO and NOx were measured at the center of exit plane. The high temperature air of $550K{\sim}650K$ was supplied through air preheater. As expected, experimental results indicate that NOx emission was increased and CO emission was decreased by increasing inlet air temperature. But CO emission measured at the center of exit plane was increased because of the non-uniform radial direction profiles. The Semi-Empirical Correlation method was applied to obtain the design point emissions of NOx and CO. Also the flame temperature, CO and NOx emissions were measured along the centerline of liner at 650K inlet air temperature to determine the position of dilution holes.
