Simulation and Examination for Beam Profile of DFB Laser (DFB 레이저의 빔 분포 시뮬레이션과 검정)

  • Lasers for optical broadband communication systems should have excellent frequency selectivity and modal stability. DFB lasers have low lasing frequency shift during high speed current modulation. In this paper, we have developed a simulation software and analysed beam profiles of a lasing mode in longitudinal direction of an 1.55um DFB laser with two mirrors and without anti-reflection coatings, that have both an index- and gain-gratings. As the phases of the index and gain gratings on the mirror faces are varied, the beam profiles |R(z)| and |S(z)| of the lasing mode with the emitted power ratio Pl/pr are analysed and examined. In order to reduce the threshold current of a lasing mode and enhance the frequency stability, κL should be greater than 8, regardless of the grating phases on the mirror faces.

  • In the present study, I investigated the effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), arachidonic acid (AA), and Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibitor (NOS-I), alone or in combination, on the viability of cultured primary normal human oral keratinocytes (NHOK). Specifically, we examined whether AA and NOS-I could protect primary NHOK from glutamate cytotoxicity. The purpose of this study was therefore the preliminary study for the examination of the interaction between these agents and NHOK in order to elucidate the mechanisms by which epithelial growth and regeneration are regulated. NHOK were obtained from gingival tissue of 20 individuals aged 20 to 29, and third passage (P3) cells were used for this study. Cell viability was measured by the MTT assay. NMDA and NNA, a calcium dependent NOS inhibitor, induced an initial increase in cell number, which subsequently decreased by the $7^{th}$ day. Low concentration of AA ($0.5\;{\mu}M$ & $1\;{\mu}M$) induced an increase in cell number while high concentrations of AA ($5\;{\mu}M$ & $10\;{\mu}M$) induced a decrease in cell number. The decrease in cell number induced by NMDA at the $7^{th}$ day was abolished by the addition of low concentrations of AA ($0.5\;{\mu}M$ & $1\;{\mu}M$) or NOS inhibitors. Low concentrations of AA ($0.5\;{\mu}M$ & $1\;{\mu}M$) or NOS inhibitors may protect the NHOK from NMDA induced cytotoxicity. These reactions might be related to the NMDA receptor in the cell and the change of the intracellular calcium ion concentration.

Inhibitory Effects of a Herbal Composition (HemoHIM) on the Activation of Human Mast Cell Line (HMC-1) (생약복합조성물(HemoHIM)의 사람 비만세포주 활성 억제 효과)

  • In our previous study, a new herbal preparation (HemoHIM) was developed as a functional food for the radioprotection and immunomodulatory agents. In order elucidate the mechanism involved, we examined the effect of HemoHIM on the compound 48/80-induced histamine release, and on the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA)/calcium ionophore (A23187)-induced inflammatory cytokine secretion in HMC-1. The cell culture supernatants were harvested, and the cytokines (IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-$\alpha$, GM-CSF) in the supernatants were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The total RNA of the cells was extracted, and the cytokines or c-kit/tryptase/Fc$\varepsilon$RI's messenger RNA expressions were examined using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Under low concentrations, HemoHIM inhibited histamine release in HMC-1 stimulated compound 48/80. Furthermore HemoHIM inhibited PMA/A23187-induced inflammatory cytokines' secreation or mRNA expression in a dose-dependent manner. But IL-8 secretion was not inhibited by low concentrayion of HemoHIM, respectively. The mRNA expression of c-kit and Fc$\varepsilon$RI were also inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. Tryptase mRNA expression was only inhibited by low concentration of HemoHIM. These results indicated that HemoHIM might be an useful agent for protection against allergy as well as immune modulation, especially since it is a relatively nontoxic natural product.

DFB lasers have low lasing frequency shift during high speed current modulation. In this paper, when a refractive index grating and a gain grating are simultaneously present in a DFB laser having a wavelength of 1.55 ㎛, the dielectric film is coated so that reflection does not occur on the right mirror surface, so that ρr=0. For the first mode, which requires a minimum gain at the threshold, the beam distribution of the oscillation mode in the longitudinal direction and the radiated power ratio Pl/Pr were analyzed and compared for the cases of the phase of ρl=π and π/2. If the phase of ρl=π, in order to obtain a low threshold current and high frequency stability, κL should be greater than 8. In the case of the phase of ρl=π/2, for low threshold current, κL is necessary to be 1.0, where the oscillation frequency coincides with the lattice frequency.   • The high efficiency power management IC(PMIC) with DTMOS(Dynamic Threshold voltage MOSFET) switching device is proposed in this paper. PMIC is controlled with PWM control method in order to have high power efficiency at high current level. DTMOS with low on-resistance is designed to decrease conduction loss. The control parts in Buck converter, that is, PWM control circuits consist of a saw-tooth generator, a band-gap reference circuit, an error amplifier and a comparator circuit as a block. The Saw-tooth generator is made to have 1.2 MHz oscillation frequency and full range of output swing from ground to supply voltage(VDD:3.3V). The comparator is designed with two stage OP amplifier. And the error amplifier has 70dB DC gain and $64^{\circ}$ phase margin. DC-DC converter, based on Voltage-mode PWM control circuits and low on-resistance switching device, achieved the high efficiency near 95% at 100mA output current. And DC-DC converter is designed with LDO in stand-by mode which fewer than 1mA for high efficiency.

A study on the design exploration of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for Smart phone (스마트폰을 위한 광학식 손떨림 보정 설계 탐색에 관한 연구)

  • In order to achieve the low complexity and area, power in the design of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) suitable for the smart phone, this paper presents the following design explorations, such as; optimization of gyroscope sampling rate, simple and accurate gyroscope filters, and reduced operating frequency of motion compensation, optimized bit width in ADC and DAC, evaluation of noise effects due to PWM driving. In experiments of gyroscope sampling frequencies, it is found that error values are unvaried in the frequency above 5KHz. The gyroscope filter is efficiently designed by combining the Fuzzy algorithm, to illustrate the reasonable compensation for the angle and phase errors. Further, in the PWM design, the power consumption of 2MHz driving is shown to decrease up to 50% with respect to the linear driving, and the imaging noises are reduced in the driving frequency above 2MHz driving frequency. The operating frequency could be reduced to 5KHz in controller and 10KHz in driver, respectively, in the motion compensation. For ADC and DAC, the optimized exploration experiments verify the minimum bit width of 11bits in ADC as well as 10bits in DAC without the performance degradation.

Pd nanoparticles on poly(amidoamine) dendrimers modified single-walled carbon nanotubes as highly sensitive hydrogen gas sensors

  • In order to overcome the lack of reactivity with hydrogen gas ($H_2$) and utilize unique properties of Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs) for the application to hydrogen sensors, there have been intensive works on the surface functionalization of CNTs with various types of nanoparticles including Pd. In the present work, we have investigated the effect of dendrimers and Pd nanoparticles to the hydrogen sensing properties of CNTs by comparing three types of samples: Pd/SWNTs (Sample I), Pd/dendrimer/SWNTs (Sample II) and heat-treated Pd/dendrimers/SWNTs (Sample III). As a result of IV measurement under the $H_2$ and air, sample I was found to have a high sensitivity (25%) to $H_2$, but to have a very slow response time (324 s) and recovery rate. On the other hand, Sample II was found to show much faster response time (3 s) and good recovery rate but lower sensitivity (8.6%) than Sample I which is due to induced dipole moments in the dendrimers. Interestingly, Sample III showed both fast response time (7 s) and high sensitivity (25%), indicating that the pyrolysis of the dendrimers during heat treatment which reduce the distance between the surface of the SWNTs and the functionalized Pd nanoparticles plays a key role in improving the sensitivity. The pyrolysis of the dendrimers in Pd nanoparticle-dendrimer-SWNTs was found to enable a significant electrical conductance modulation upon exposure to extremely low concentrations (10 ppm) of $H_2$ in air. Our results demonstrate that the Pd Nanoparticle-Grafted Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes(SWNTs) with Dendrimers can be used to detect hydrogen, makingoutstanding properties such as fast response, and recovery time, high sensitivity, low detection limit at room temperature compared with other types of hydrogen sensors.

Effect of Gas now Modulation on Etch Depth Uniformity for Plasma Etching of 150 mm GaAs Wafers (150 mm GaAs 웨이퍼의 플라즈마 식각에서 식각 깊이의 균일도에 대한 가스 흐름의 최적화 연구)

  • We developed engineering methods to control gas flow in a plasma reactor in order to achieve good etch depth uniformity for large area GaAs etching. Finite difference numerical method was found quite useful for simulation of gas flow distribution in the reactor for dry etching of GaAs. The experimental results in $BCl_3/N_2/SF_6/He$ ICP plasmas confirmed that the simulated data fitted very well with real data. It is noticed that a focus ring could help improve both gas flow and etch uniformity for 150 mm diameter GaAs plasma etch processing. The simulation results showed that optimization of clamp configuration could decrease gas flow uniformity as low as $\pm$ 1.5% on an 100 mm(4 inch) GaAs wafer and $\pm$ 3% for a 150 m(6 inch) wafer with the fixed reactor and electrode, respectively. Comparison between simulated gas flow uniformity and real etch depth distribution data concluded that control of gas flow distribution in the chamber would be significantly important in order or achieve excellent dry etch uniformity of large area GaAs wafers.

  • The UHDTV system, which provides realistic service with ultra-high definite video and multi-channel audio, has been studied as a next generation broadcasting service. Since the conventional digital terrestrial transmission system is not capable to cover the increased transmission data rate of the UHDTV service, there are great necessity of researches about increase of data rate. Accordingly, the researches has been studied to increase the transmission data rate of the DVB-T2 system using dual-polarized MIMO technique and high order modulation. In order to optimize the MIMO DVB-T2 system where irregular LDPC codes are used, it is necessary to study the design of the bit mapper that matches the LDPC code and QAM symbols in MIMO channel. However, the research related to the design of the bit mapper has been limited to the SISO system. Therefore, this paper defines a new parameter that indicates the VND distribution of MIMO DVB-T2 system and performs the performance analysis according to the parameter which will be helpful for designing a MIMO bit mapper.

  • Recently, with mobile devices increasing, as a variety of multimedia functions are needed, battery life is decreased. Accordingly the methods for extending the battery life has been proposed. In order to implement these methods, we have to know exactly the status of the battery, so we need a high resolution analog to digital converter(ADC). In case of the existing integrating sigma-delta ADC, it have not convert reset-time conversion cycle to function of resolution. Because of this reason, all digital values corresponding to the all number of bits will not be able to be expressed. To compensated this drawback, this paper propose that all digital values corresponding to the number of bits can be expressed without having to convert reset-time additional conversion cycle to function of resolution by using a up-down counter. The proposed circuit achieves improved SNDR compared to conventional converters simulation result. Also, this was designed for low power suitable for battery management systems and fabricated in 0.35um process.
