As resent trends in structural construction have been to build taller and larger structures than any time in the past, they have had high flexibility and low damping that can cause large vibration response under severe environmental loading such as earthquakes, winds, and mechanical excitations. The damper with mass and sqring is one aproach to safeguarding the structure against excessive vibrations. In this paper, a large capacity hybrid-type linear motor damper(LMD) was designed and fabricated for the application to the vibration control of a large building structure model. It has been designed to be able to move the damper mass, 1,500 kg up to ${\pm}250mm$ strokes at the first mode natural frequency of the building structure model, ${\pm}0.51Hz$. Linear motor is consisted of the fixed coil and the movable NdFeB permanent magnets field part. The PM field part composed magnet modules and iron yoke, is the damper mass itself, 1500kg. LMD therefore has a simplified structure and requires a few elements in the driving system, being compared with a rotary motor damper and a hydraulic damper. However, the manufacture of large PM linear actuator is difficult because of the limit of PM size and the attraction and repulsion at the assembly of PM. Therefore, large damper system is manufactured and tested for dynamic characteristics and frequency response.
Cable-stayed bridges are attractive due to their beauty, reducing material consumption, less harm to the environment and so on, in comparison with other kinds of bridges. As a massive structure with long period and low damping (0.3 to 2%) under many dynamic loads, these bridges are susceptible to fatigue, serviceability disorder, damage or even collapse. Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) is a suitable controlling system to reduce the vibrations and prevent the threats in such bridges. In this paper, Multi Tuned Mass Damper (MTMD) system is added to the Ahvaz cable stayed Bridge in Iran, to reduce its seismic vibrations. First, the bridge is modeled in SAP2000 followed with result verification. Dead and live loads and the moving loads have been assigned to the bridge. Then the finite element model is developed in OpenSees, with the goal of running a nonlinear time-history analysis. Three far-field and three near-field earthquake records are imposed to the model after scaling to the PGA of 0.25 g, 0.4 g, 0.55 g and 0.7 g. Two MTMD systems, passive and active, with the number of TMDs from 1 to 8, are placed in specific points of the main span of bridge, adding a total mass ratio of 1 to 10% to the bridge. The parameters of the TMDs are optimized using Genetic Algorithm (GA). Also, the optimum force for active control is achieved by Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC). The results showed that the maximum displacement of the center of the bridge main span reduced 33% and 48% respectively by adding passive and active MTMD systems. The RMS of displacement reduced 37% and 47%, the velocity 36% and 42% and also the base shear in pylons, 27% and 47%, respectively by adding passive and active systems, in the best cases.
This paper describes a study of the influence of a dynamically flexible building structure on pressures inside and net pressures on the roof of low-rise buildings with a dominant opening. It is shown that dynamic interaction between the flexible roof and the internal pressure results in a coupled system that is similar to a two-degree-of-freedom mechanical system consisting of two mass-spring-damper systems with excitation forces acting on both the masses. Two resonant modes are present, the natural frequencies of which can readily be obtained from the model. As observed with quasi-static building flexibility, the effect of increased dynamic flexibility is to reduce the first natural frequency as well as the corresponding peak value of the admittance, the latter being the result of increased damping effects. Consequently, it is found that the internal and net roof pressure fluctuations (RMS coefficients) are also reduced with dynamic flexibility. This model has been validated from experiments conducted using a cylindrical model with a leeward end flexible diaphragm, whereby good match between predicted and measured natural frequencies, and trends in peak admittances and RMS responses with flexibility, were obtained. Furthermore, since significant differences exist between internal and net roof pressure responses obtained from the dynamic flexibility model and those obtained from the quasi-static flexibility model, it is concluded that the quasi-static flexibility assumption may not be applicable to dynamically flexible buildings. Additionally, since sensitivity analyses reveal that the responses are sensitive to both the opening loss coefficient and the roof damping ratio, careful estimates should therefore be made to these parameters first, if predictions from such models are to have significance to real buildings.

The 2D flow around 13 similar stay-vane profiles with different trailing edge geometries is investigated to determinate the main characteristics of the excitation forces for each one of them and their respective dynamic behaviors when modeled as a free-oscillating system. The main goal is avoid problems with cracks of hydraulic turbines components. A stay vane profile with a history of cracks was selected as the basis for this work. The commercial finite-volume code $FLUENT^{(R)}$ was employed in the simulations of the stationary profiles and, then, modified to take into account the transversal motion of elastically mounted profiles with equivalent structural stiffness and damping. The k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model is employed in all simulations and a deforming mesh technique used for models with profile motion. The static-model simulations were carried out for each one of the 13 geometries using a constant far field flow velocity value in order to determine the lift force oscillating frequency and amplitude as a function of the geometry. The free-oscillating stay-vane simulations were run with a low mass-damping parameter ($m^*{\xi}=0.0072$) and a single mean flow velocity value (5m/s). The structural bending stiffness of the stay-vane is defined by the Reduced Velocity parameter (Vr). The dynamic analyses were divided into two sets. The first set of simulations was carried out only for one profile with $2{\leq}Vr{\leq}12$. The second set of simulations focused on determining the behavior of each one of the 13 profiles in resonance.
A B-spline based high order panel method was developed for the motion of bodies in an ideal fluid, either of infinite extent or with a free boundarysurface. In this method, both the geometry and the potential are represented by the B-spline, which guarantees more accurate results than most potential based low order methods. In the present work, we applied this B-spline based high order method to the radiation problem of floating bodies. The boundary condition on the free surface was satisfied by adopting a Kelvin-type Green function and irregular frequencies were removed by placing additional control points on the free surface surrounding the body. The numerical results were validated by comparison with existing numerical and experimental results.
The rotating inner cylinder executes a periodic translational motion in concentric annulus while the outer one is stationary. In the study of flow-induced vibrations and relaxed instabilities, it is of interest to evaluate the fluid-dynamic forces acting on the rotating inner cylinder. In the present work, the governing equations for the confined flow are expressed as Navier-Stokes equations, including the steady and unsteady terms. The fluid parameters for steady flow generated by the rotating cylinder are determined analytically while the unsteady ones by the oscillatory motion are evaluates by a numerical method based on the spectral collocation method. In order to validate the numerical approach, the numerical results are compared wish the analytical ones given by existing theories, for simple cases where the both approaches are applicable. Good agreement was found between the results. It is found the effects of the Reynolds number, defined by rotating velocity, on the fluid-dynamic forces are important for the case of relatively low oscillatory Reynolds number, defined by oscillatory frequency : j.e., in case of $Re_\omega\gg Re_S$.
An experiment has been performed using a facility, which simulates the safety depressurization system (SDS) and in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST) of APR1400, an advanced PWR being developed in Korea, to investigate the dynamic load resulting from the blowdown of steam from a steam generator through a sparser. The influence of the key parameters, such as air mass, steam pressure, submergence, valve opening time, and pool temperature, on frequency and peak toads was investigated. The blowdown phenomenon was analyzed to find out the real cause of the initiation of bubble oscillation and discrepancy in frequencies between the experiment and calculation by conventional equation for bubble oscillation. The cause of significant damping was discussed and is presumed to be the highly tortuous flow path around bubble. The Rayleigh-Plesset equation, which is modified by introducing method of image, reasonably reproduces the bubble oscillation in a confined tank. Right after the completion of air discharge the steam discharge immediately follows and it condenses abruptly to provide low-pressure pocket. It may contribute to the negative maximum being greater than positive maximum. The subsequently discharging steam does not play as at the driving force anymore.
A new concept of piezoelectric smart panels for noise reduction in wide band frequencies is proposed and their possibility is experimentally investigated. The proposed panels are based on active and passive methods. They use piezoelectric smart structure technology for active noise reduction at low band frequencies and passive sound absorbing materials for mid-range of noise frequencies. To prove the concept of piezoelectric smart panels, an acoustic measurement experiment was performed. The smart panels exhibit a good noise reduction in middle and high frequency ranges due to the mass effects of absorbing materials or/and the air gap. The use of piezoelectric smart panel renders noise reduction large at resonance frequency. Another concept of smart panel that uses piezoelectric damping is experimentally investigated. Since piezoelectric dampings can reduce vibration and noise at resonance frequencies with simple shunt circuit, they have merits in terms of economy and simplicity. Dissipated energy method(DEM) is adopted to tune the shunt circuit precisely in piezoelectric dampings. Noise reduction at multiple resonance frequencies is demonstrated.
This paper presents a systematic design method of an anti-swing control law for overhead cranes. A velocity servo system for the trolley of a crane is designed based on the dynamics of the trolley and its load. The velocity servo system compensates for the effects of load swing on the trolley dynamics so that the velocity servo is independent of load swing. The velocity servo system is used for the design of a position servo system for the trolley via the loop shaping method. The position servo system and the swing dynamics of the load are then used to design an angle control system for load swing based on the root locus method. The combined position servo and the angle control systems constitute the overall control system. In the presence of low frequency disturbances, the proposed control law guarantees accurate position control for the trolley and fast damping for load swing. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed control law is independent of the mass of the load. Experimental results on a prototype crane show the effectiveness of the proposed anti-swing control law.
