  • In the extreme conditions of launch vehicle in a space, such as cryogenic temperature and low-gravity environment, the mass gauging of remaining propellants becomes a difficult problem. Pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) method is one of the attractive mass gauging methods under low-gravity due to its simplicity and reliability. PVT gauging experiment with various mass flow rates of helium injection is carried out with the experimental apparatus creating cryogenic homogeneous condition as the condition of low-gravity. Experimental results are analyzed by a novel PVT gauging analysis method which considers all instantaneous changes of pressure and temperature in the ullage volume with small time intervals. It is observed that the gauging error from the novel PVT gauging analysis is -0.11% with 2 slpm mass flow rate of helium injection.

  • This paper presents a gravity compensator for the manipulator of a service robot. The manipulator of a service robot is operated with low velocity for the safety reason in most cases. In this situation gravitational torques generated by the mass of links are often much greater than dynamic torques for motion. A gravity compensator can counterbalance the gravitational torques, thereby enabling to utilize relatively low power motors. In this paper the gravity compensation for the roll-pitch rotation is considered which is often used for the shoulder joints of the manipulator of a service robot or humanoid robot. A gimbals is implemented and two 1-dof gravity compensators are equipped at the base. One compensates the gravitational torque at the roll joint and another provides the compensational torque for the gimbals. Various analyses showed that the proposed compensator can counterbalance the gravitational torques of 87% at the pitch joint and 50% at the roll joint. It is verified from dynamic simulations that the proposed compensator effectively counterbalances the gravitational torques.

  • The gravity measurment has been carried out at 48 gravity stations with intervals of 1.0~1.5 km along the survey line between Samcheog, Gosari and Taebaek to study subsurface geology and geologic structure in the northeastern part of the Ockchon zone. The Bouguer gravity anomaly values were obtained from the measured gravity values through the gravity corrections. The subsurface geology and geologic structure were interpreted quantitatively by means of the Fourier series method and Talwani method for 2.5 dimensional body. In the study area, the depth of Conrad discontinuity is about 10 km at Samcheog, northeastern end of the survey line, and it is increased rapidly to about 12.5 km at Miro, 15 km at Gosari and 15.5 km at Dongjeom, southwestern end of the survey line, respectively. The depth of the basement of the Ockchon zone exposed at Samcheog is increased smoothly to about 2 km at 5 km from Samcheog along the survey line, and is exposed again in the area between Singiry and Gosari. Beyond Gosari its depth is increased to about 1.7 km, and displaced 2.3 km downward by Osipcheon fault near Dogyeri and 0.5 km by Baeksan thrust near Cheolam, respectively. Many V-shaped low Bouguer gravity anomalies resulted from the fracture zone associated with faults imply the existence of Osipcheon fault and several inferred faults. The low Bouguer gravity anomaly zone between Tongdong and Dongjeom is caused by Jurassic gneissose granite. A local high Bouguer gravity anomaly at 35 km along the survey line from Samcheog is interpreted by the effect of iron deposit of high density existed at subsurface. The thickness of Great Limestone Group varies from 0.5 km to 1.4 km, that of Pyeongan Supergroup from 0.4 km to 0.9 km, and that of Yangdeog Group is about 0.3 km. The thickness of Jurassic gneissose granite varies from 1.5 to 3.0 km.

  • Field investigations have been carried out in two 60-day stages on the surf beat low frequency waves in Anzali port, one of the main commercial ports in Iran, located in southwest coast of the Caspian Sea. The characteristics of significant water waves were measured at three metering stations in the sea, one at the entrance of the port and three in the basin. The measured data were inspected to investigate the surf beat negative effects on the tranquility of the port. Using field measurements and complementary numerical modeling, the response of the basin to the infra-gravity long waves was inspected for a range of wave frequencies. It was concluded that the water surface fluctuations in the port is strongly related to the incident wave period. The long waves with periods of about 45s were recognized as the worst cases for water surfaceperturbation in the port. For wave periods higher than the mentioned range, the order of fluctuation was generally low.

  • Gravity thickening process has been widely used in WTP sludge thickening at domestic water treatment plant. The operation method of the process is very simple, however, the process requires long detention time about 24~48 hours for sludge thickening, uses polymer, and low total solids of thickened sludge to increase sludge thickening efficiency. To solve there problems, we studied about flotation process, especially, electro-flotation (EF) process in WTP sludge thickening. Electro-flotation process is simpler than dissolved-air-flotation(DAF) process because EF needs only electrode and current to generate micro-bubbles and the operation is easy. This study was performed at two batch columns to compare interface height, total solids, effluent turbidity between an electro-flotation thickening and a gravity thickening. According to the result, an electro-flotation thickening was that interface height was decreasing, total solids had high concentration, and effluent turbidity was low in comparison with a gravity thickening. Also, it will make the high efficiency of following process, such as a dehydrating process and digestive process. because of high total solids and low moisture content in the sludge.

  • Experimental data on the effect of the variable gravity magnitude, namely microgravity, normal gravity and hyper-gravity, on flow pattern and frictional pressure drop were obtained during co-current air-water flow in a horizontal tube, The flow patterns were found to depend strongly on the gravity magnitude and certain flow pattern were found to depend on the gas superficial velocity. The effect of the gravity magnitude had an effect on the frictional pressure drop only at low flow rates. The present data are used to evaluate some of existing flow pattern transition and pressure drop models and correlations.

  • To construct precision geoid model, the gravity data having equal distribution and quality is necessary. In previous study, however, the geoid model has low precision since the biased distributed gravity data and some unverified data has been used and the gap between land and ocean exists. Now, the airborne and land gravity data was collected by various survey and the ship-borne gravity data and altimeter data has been achieved. Therefore, the precision geoid model development would be possible. And the GPS/Leveling data obtained by NGII could be used for construction of hybrid geoid in Korea. In this study, the procedure of geoid construction based on airborne, land, ship-borne and altimeter data using Remove-Restore technique will be explained. And the verification of gravimetric geoid and hybrid geoid would be introduced.

  • A near extinction nonpremixed counterflow flame of 19% methane diluted by 81% nitrogen by volume and undiluted air at a low global strain rate, 20 s-1, was computed. Investigations were focused on effects of the duct thickness and velocity boundary conditions on the flame structure in normal and zero gravity conditions. The results showed that, under normal gravity conditions, the effects of the duct thickness and velocity boundary conditions were significant by shifting the flame position, but negligible in zero gravity. The differences in flame structure were caused by buoyancy, and hence should be considered in the measurements in normal gravity.

  • This study was aimed at the relationship between peak EMG amplitude on low back muscles acting on L5/S1 and load center of gravity, trunk lateral bending while lifting an object. Musculoskeletal disorders including low back pain can occur even when handling heavy objects only once as well as when doing non-heavy materials repeatedly. 11 male subjects with average 23 age were required to lift a 15.8kg object symmetrically three times. Peak EMG amplitudes on 6 muscles related with L5/S1 were recorded and analyzed. The lifting conditions consisted of lifting symmetric load with no trunk lateral bending, asymmetric load with no trunk lateral bending, and asymmetric load with trunk lateral bending to the load center of gravity within an object. The results showed that peak EMG amplitude on back muscles contralateral to load center of gravity was observed greater in comparison with the symmetric load. Also, in case of lifting asymmetric load the posture with trunk lateral bending increased peak EMG amplitude on muscles contralateral to load center of gravity more than with no trunk lateral bending. This research can be used as one administrative intervention in order to reduce the low back pain incidence with suggesting workers that they keep the trunk not bending to load center of gravity if possible when lifting a heavy asymmetric object.

  • The gravity measurement was conducted at 256 stations around Chungju Lake to study subsurface geological distributions and subterranean mass discontinuities by the results of gravity anomaly in Metamorphic Complex, Okcheon Group, Great Limestone Group of Choson Supergroup, and Cretaceous biotite granites. Okcheon Group showed a high Bouguer gravity anomaly while Great Limestone Group of Choson Supergroup relatively a low anomaly. The mean depth of subterranean mass discontinuities is about 2.0 km and downward along the Suchangri Formation from the Hwanggangri and Moonjuri formations. In general, Okcheon Group appeared shallower than the depth of Great Limestone Group of Choson Supergroup when imaging the subterranean mass discontinuities from the Bouguer gravity anomaly.
