  • In this paper, we propose a lossless motion video coding method using motion compensation. For realtime coding and transmission, we developed a lossless video codec based on the proposed method. It was confirmed the codec functions normally in an experiment involving coding and transmitting through an actual ATM network. Furthermore, we proposed a lossless coding method with bit-plane expansion under a constant bitrate. Two approaches, a closed bit-plane approach and a merged bit-plane approach, are considered and characteristics of their compression efficiency are estimated. Simulation results show that the proposed method is suitable for lossless video coding with bitrate control.

  • A new lossless intra coding method based on residual transform is applied to the next generation video coding standard HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding). HEVC includes a multi-directional spatial prediction method to reduce spatial redundancy by using neighboring samples as a prediction for the samples in a block of data to be encoded. In the new lossless intra coding method, the spatial prediction is performed as samplewise DPCM (Difference Pulse Code Modulation) but is implemented as block-based manner by using residual transform and secondary residual transform on the HEVC standard. Experimental results show that the new lossless intra coding method reduces the bit rate by approximately 6.45% in comparison with the lossless intra coding method previously included in the HEVC standard.

  • This paper describes an effective technique for lossless inter-frame video coding sequences based on a JPEG2000 CODEC. This technique has diminished the compression rate for lossless video coding. In this proposed method, firstly a predicted image for an in- put image is generated by motion estimation(ME), and then a difference image between the input image and the predicted image is calculated, and finally the difference image becomes an input image to a JPEG2000 encoder for lossless coding. Simulation results show the effectiveness of this method.

  • The state-of-the-art H.264/AVC standard was designed for the lossy video coding so that it could not yield the best performance for lossless video coding. In this paper, we propose two efficient intra lossless coding methods by embedding a pixel-wise prediction into the H.264/AVC. One is based on the pixel-wise prediction for the residual signal of the H.264/AVC intra Prediction and the other suggests a newly additional intra prediction mode for the conventional intra prediction. We found that the proposed lossless coding algorithms could achieve approximately $12%{\sim}25%$ more bit saving compared to the H.264/AVC FRExt high profile for several test sequences in terms of a compression ratio.

  • A new modified lossless intra-coding method based on a cross residual transform is applied to HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding). The HEVC standard including a multi-directional spatial prediction method to reduce spatial redundancy encodes the pixels in a PU (Prediction Unit) by using neighboring pixels. In the new modified lossless intra-coding method, the spatial prediction is performed by pixel-based DPCM but is implemented by block-based manner by using cross residual transform on the HEVC standard. The experimental results show that the new lossless intra-coding method reduces the bit rate of approximately 8.4% in comparison with the lossless-intra coding method in the HEVC standard and the proposed method results in slightly better compression ratio than the JPEG2000 lossless coding.

  • In this paper, an improved CABAC is proposed for the lossless compression in H.264/AVC. CABAC in the lossless coding is not as efficient as that in the lossy compression since it was developed for lossy coding. CABAC for the lossless coding in H.26과/AVC Advanced 4:4:4 Profile is applied without the change of the conventional binarization method. Thus, a binarization method considering the statistical characteristic of residual signals is proposed for the lossless coding in 0.264/AVC Advanced 4:4:4 Profile. The experimental results show that the proposed method obtains approximately 3.4% bitrate reduction in comparison to that of the conventional lossless coding.

  • This paper proposes a method for efficient lossless depth map coding for MPEG 3D-Video coding. In general, the conventional video coding method such as H.264 has been used for depth map coding. However, the conventional video coding methods do not consider the image characteristics of the depth map. Therefore, as a lossless depth map coding method, this paper proposes a bit-plane based lossless depth mar coding method by using the MPEG-4 Part 2 shape coding scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves the compression ratios of 28.91:1. In intra-only coding, proposed method reduces the bitrate by 24.84% in comparison with the JPEG-LS scheme, by 39.35% in comparison with the JPEG-2000 scheme, by 30.30% in comparison with the H.264(CAVLC mode) scheme, and by 16.65% in comparison with the H.264(CABAC mode) scheme. In addition, in intra and inter coding the proposed method reduces the bitrate by 36.22% in comparison with the H.264(CAVLC mode) scheme, and by 23.71% in comparison with the 0.264(CABAC mode) scheme.

  • H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is jointly developed by ITU-T and ISO/IEC. It provides efficient coding efficiency compared with previous video standards. It reduced the bit rate by approximately $30%{\sim}70%$ while providing the same or better image quality. And, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC supports not only lossy coding but also lossless coding. In this paper, we suggest a method to improve lossless coding efficiency. Proposed method is based on Intra residual DPCM, it has same effect with the prediction from spatially nearest pixel. Also, proposed method does not broken decoder pipe-line. Experimental results, the method reduced the bit rate by approximately 12% in comparison with the H.264 Intra lossless coding. As a result, it is adopted into the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Advanced 4:4:4 profile.

  • This study addresses a low complexity and lossless frame memory compression algorithm based on block-buffer structure for efficient high resolution video processing. Our study utilizes the block-based MHT (modified Hadamard transform) for spatial decorrelation and AGR (adaptive Golomb-Rice) coding as an entropy encoding stage to achieve lossless image compression with low complexity and efficient hardware implementation. The MHT contains only adders and 1-bit shift operators. As a result of AGR not requiring additional memory space and memory access operations, AGR is effective for low complexity development. Comprehensive experiments and computational complexity analysis demonstrate that the proposed algorithm accomplishes superior compression performance relative to existing methods, and can be applied to hardware devices without image quality degradation as well as negligible modification of the existing codec structure. Moreover, the proposed method does not require the memory access operation, and thus it can reduce costs for hardware implementation and can be useful for processing high resolution video over Full HD.

  • This paper is to propose a scalable video coding scheme for adaptive digital hologram video service for various reconstruction environments. It uses both the light source information and digital hologram at both the sending side and the receiving side. It is a resolution-scalable coding method that scales the resolution, that is, the size of the reconstructed image. The method compresses the residual data for both the digital hologram and the light source information. For the digital hologram, a lossy compression method is used, while for the light source information, a lossless compression method is used. The experimental results showed that the proposed method is superior to the existing method in the image quality at the same compression ratio. Especially it showed better performance than the existing method as the compression ratio becomes higher.
