For a basic engineering education Problem-Based Learning (PBL) method was adopted in order to pursuit the learner acquisition of critical knowledge, problem solving proficiency, and self-directed learning strategies by measurements of various physical and biological units, by calculation of errors in experimental data, by leraning energy conservation law and equation of motion, and, by analysis ability on data patterns through Elliptical Trainer(ET) exercise. The results show the ET may be a good experimental tool for understanding the PBL method. A sample syllabus was provided for one semester use, and by use of data obtained by self-directed and creative learning, the results of three groups for the PBL problems proposed by using ET were (1) the slope of angle was 23.5o in the diagram of energy exhaustion against velocity (GROUP A), (2) the angle range between the maximal and minimal energy exhaustion against weight loss was 15.0o ~ 26.5o (GROUP B), and finally (3) the angle was varied by 51.0o in the diagram of weight loss against distance (GROUP C).

An additional relationship equation is numerically obtained to increase the accuracy of the conventional equation for obtaining the resonant frequency of a resonator. Although the conventional equation is widely used in industry because of its simplicity, it does not provide enough information on the cavity or the neck of the resonator for noise reduction in a duct. Resonator designers have difficulty implementing resonator design owing to the uncertainty in geometry presented by the well-known formula for determining the resonant frequency. To overcome this problem, this work determines an approximate equation using results of numerical calculation. To this end, shape parameters of the neck and cavity of a resonator are defined, and an equation describing the relationship between them is derived by adjusting the peak frequency in the transmission loss curve of a resonator to its resonant frequency. The application and validity of the derived equation are investigated in a numerical simulation and an acoustic experiment, respectively.

The dielectric and optical properties of GaInZnO (GIZO), HfInZnO (HIZO) and InZnO (IZO) thin films on glass by RF magnetron sputtering method were investiged using reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy (REELS). The band gap was estimated from the onset values of REELS spectra. The band gaps of GIZO, HIZO and IZO thin films are 3.1 eV, 3.5 eV and 3.0 eV, respectively, Hf and Ga incorporated into IZO results in an increase in the energy band gap of IZO by 0.5 eV and 0.1 eV. The dielectric functions were determined by comparing the effective cross section determined from experimental REELS with a rigorous model calculation based on the dielectric response theory, using available software package, good agreement between the experimental and fitting results gives confidence in the accuracy of the determined dielectric function. The main peak of Energy Loss Function (ELF) obtained from IZO shows at 18.42 eV, which shifted to 19.43 eV and 18.15 eV for GIZO and HIZO respectively, because indicates the corporation of cation Ga and Hf in the composition. The optical properties represented by the dielectric function e, the refractive index n, the extinction coefficient k, and the transmission coefficient, T of HIZO and IZO thin films were determined from a quantitative analysis of REELS. The transmission coefficient was increased to 93% and decreased to 87% in the visible region with the incorporation of Hf and Ga in the IZO compound.

This paper presents further investigation into the effect of over-expansion cycle in a spark-ignition engine. On the basis of the results obtained in previous studies, several combinations of late-closing (LC) of intake valve and expansion ratio were tested using a single-cylinder production engine. A large volume of intake capacity was inserted into the intake manifold to simulate multi-cylinder engines. With the large capacity volume, LC can decrease the pumping loss and then increase the mechanical efficiency. Increasing the expansion ratio from 11 to 23.9 with LC application can produce about 13% improvement of thermal efficiency which was suggested to be caused by the increased cycle efficiency. The decrease of compression ratio from 11 to 5.5 gives little effect on the thermal efficiency if the expansion ratio could be kept constant. Thus, the expansion ratio is revealed to be a determining factor for cycle efficiency, while compression ratio is no more important, which suggests the usefulness of controlling the intake charge with intake valve closure timing. These were successfully explained by simple thermodynamic calculation and thus the mechanism could be verified by the estimation.

In this paper, a method to approximate a multi-layer Green's function is proposed based on a FDTD scheme and a rational function approximation. For a given horizontal propagation wavenumber, time domain response is calculated and then Fourier transformed to the spectral domain Green's function. Using the rational function approximation, the pole and residue of the Green's function can be estimated, which are crucial for a calculation of a path loss. The proposed method can provide a wideband Green's function, while the conventional normal mode method can be applied to a single frequency problem. To validate the proposed method, We consider two problems, one of which has a analytical solution. The other is about multi-layer case, for which the proposed method is compared with the known normal mode solution, Kraken.

Thrust vector control system is control device which is mounted exit of the nozzle to generate pitch, yaw and roll directional force by deflecting flow direction of the supersonic jet from the nozzle. By obtaining control force, jetvane which is exposed in jet flow is working thermal and aerodynamic load. Axial thrust loss and side thrust is affected by shock patterns and interactions between jetvanes according to jetvane geometry and turning angle. In this study, we designed 6 types of jetvane to evaluate pitch, yaw and roll characteristics of ietvane in supersonic flow, and perform the cold flow test in range of turning angles of jetvanes between $0^{\cire}$ and $25^{\cire}$ by $5^{\cire}$ respectively. Also, calculation is going side by side to analyse flow interaction. Results show that there is no interactions between jetvanes upto turning angle 20$^{\circ}$, chord and lead length ratio is very important parameter to aerodynamic performance and maximum thrust loss is appeard to 17% of axial thrust in roll directional control.
To evaluate the sequence of event and the Thermohydraulic behavior during total loss of feedwater accident and recovery procedure, a RELAP5/MOD3 calculation is performed and compared with the LOFT L9-l/L3-3 experiment. Also, the predictability of the code for the major Thermohydraulic phenomena following the accident is assessed. As a result, it is found that a pressure control using the spray until the time the water level reaches the top of the pressurizer, an overpressure protection by pressurizer PORV, a recovery of the secondary heat removal capability by refilling steam generator, and an effective cooldown by the continued natural circulation can be performed without core uncovery. It is also found that the plant-specific evaluation is necessary to confirm the effectiveness of the current symptom-oriented emergency operating procedure, especially in an overpressure protection performance and steam generator recovery performance.

The streamline curvature method is essentially used for the design procedure of multi-stage axial turbines. Moreover, by using this method, it is possible to consider the turbine loss characteristics for real operating conditions at an early design stage. However, there is not enough relevant research in South Korea to support this. In the present study, the streamline curvature method and the empirical equation for calculating the mixing loss are employed to predict the performance of a multi-stage axial turbine with leakage flows. The proposed method is applied to the prediction of the performance of a five-stage axial turbine with leakage flows, as used for an industrial gas turbine of 86 MW in South Korea. The calculation result is compared with 3D CFD data, and the advantages and limitations of the streamline curvature method are described.

The propagation prediction model of the earth-space communication link used as an international standard was used to calculate and analyze the total losses on the communication path. The standard definition and scope of ITU-R Rec. were analyzed for each parameter(rain, scintillation, atmospheric gas, clouds) used to calculate the total loss. The total losses were calculated using the standard model for each parameter and the statistical data provided by ITU-R, and the results were analyzed using the validation examples data. The rain losses were calculated using long-term local rainfall attenuation statistics data measured in the region, and compared with the calculation results using a rainfall map in the ITU-R Recommendation. The data of Cheollian satellites for the L-Band and Ka-Band were used to calculate the rainfall attenuation. In the range of 0.01% to 0.1%, it was found to have a greater attenuation slope when using local data than attenuation by the model of ITU-R.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the association between the clinical status of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and periodontitis (PD) in patients diagnosed with PD and to evaluate the impact of RA treatment on the severity of PD. Methods: The study included 148 participants with PD, of whom 64 were also diagnosed with RA (PD+RA group), while 84 age-matched participants were rheumatologically healthy (PD-only group). PD severity was assessed by the following periodontal parameters: clinical attachment loss, probing pocket depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP), alveolar bone loss, and number of missing teeth. RA disease characteristics and impact of disease were evaluated by the Disease Activity Score 28 using C-reactive protein, disease duration, RA treatment, the RA Impact of Disease tool, and the Health Assessment Questionnaire. Outcome variables were compared using parametric and non-parametric tests and associations were evaluated using regression analysis with the calculation of odds ratios (ORs). Results: Participants in the PD+RA group had higher mean PPD values (2.81 ± 0.59 mm vs. 2.58 ± 0.49 mm, P=0.009) and number of missing teeth (6.27±4.79 vs. 3.93±4.08, P=0.001) than those in the PD-only group. A significant association was found between mean PPD and RA (OR, 2.22; 95% CI, 1.16-4.31; P=0.016). Within the PD+RA group, moderate to severe periodontal disease was significantly more prevalent among participants with higher RA disease activity (P=0.042). The use of biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) was associated with a lower BOP percentage (P=0.016). Conclusions: In patients with PD, RA was associated with a higher mean PPD and number of missing teeth. The severity of PD was affected by the RA disease clinical activity and by treatment with bDMARDs, which were associated with a significantly lower mean BOP percentage.
