  • This paper presents a simple but valid loss calculation method of grid-connected photovoltaic system based on normalized yield model. The proposed method can be represented as a quantitative value for five losses and performance of grid-connected photovoltaic system with three years monitored data. These results will indicate that it is useful to investigate various loss factors causing the performance obstruction, enhance the lifetime yield for changing meteorological conditions, and determine the optimal design and performance improvement of grid-connected photovoltaic system.

  • Variable iron loss as function of current phase angle of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) was calculated through Curve Fitting Method(CFM). Also, a magnetic flux density distribution of iron core according to current phase angle was analyzed, and an iron loss calculation was performed including harmonic distortion. The experiment was performed by production of non-magnetizing model for the separation of mechanical loss, and the iron loss was calculated by the measurement of input using power analyzer and output power using dynamometer. Some error was generated between experimental results and calculation value, but an iron loss diminution according to current phase angle followed a same pattern. So, errors were generated by measurement, vibration, noise, harmonic distortion loss, etc.

  • This paper presents the multiscale calculation results of the very fast volume transport in micro/nano cylindrical tubes with the wall slippage. There simultaneously occurs the adsorbed layer flow and the intermediate continuum fluid flow which are respectively on different scales. The modeled fluid is water and the tube wall is somewhat hydrophobic. The calculation shows that the power loss on the tube no more than 1.0 Watt/m can generate the wall slippage even if the fluid-tube wall interfacial shear strength is 1 MPa; The power loss on the scale 104 Watt/m produces the volume flow rate through the tube more than one hundred times higher than the classical hydrodynamic theory calculation even if the fluid-tube wall interfacial shear strength is 1 MPa. When the wall slippage occurs, the volume flow rate through the tube is in direct proportion to the power loss on the tube but in inverse proportion to the fluid-tube wall interfacial shear strength. For low interfacial shear strengths such as no more than 1 kPa, the transport in the tube appears very fast with the magnitude more than 4 orders higher than the classical calculation if the power loss on the tube is on the scale 104 Watt/m.

  • Accurate calculation of the conduction and switching losses of a power electronic converter is required to achieve the efficiency of the converter. Such calculation is also useful for computing the junction temperature of the switches. A few models have been developed in the articles for calculating the switching energy losses during switching transitions for the given values of switched voltage and switched current. In this study, these models are comprehensively reviewed and investigated for the first time for ease of comparison among them. These models are used for calculating the average amount of switching power losses. However, some points and details should be considered in utilizing these models when switched current or switched voltage presents time-variant and alternative quantity. Therefore, an applicable technique is proposed in details to use these models under the above-mentioned conditions. A proper switching loss model and the presented technique are used to establish a new and fast method for obtaining the average switching power losses in any type of power electronic converters. The accuracy of the proposed method is evaluated by comprehensive simulation studies and experimental results.

  • This paper deals with the power loss and thermal characteristics of induction motor for machine tools according to the rated power and speed. To reduce the fabrication error by thermal strain in rotational machine tools, we calculated the power loss and thermal behavior of induction motors. Firstly, the inverse design of general induction motors for machine tool spindle has been performed. The inverse design results are compared with the torque-speed characteristic curve in motor's catalog. The power loss are calculated by finite element method(FEM) at rated condition. Secondary, the transient thermal characteristics of induction motors are calculated by equivalent thermal resistance model from Motor-CAD S/W. The inverse design, power loss and thermal behavior calculation for induction motors with various rated power and speed has been performed. Finally, to verify the design and calculation process of induction motor, we implemented the experimental set with 0.4kW 1710rpm class industrial induction motor model. The obtained thermal characteristics of experimental model confirmed that the design and power loss calculation processes are appropriate to the prediction of thermal strain in rotational machine tools.

  • Evaluation of the AC losses in the HTS tapes which are used in electric power machines in one of the important topics in this field. This paper deals with the calculation and measurement of the magnetization loss in HTS tapes. Bean model is adopted for the theoretical calculation of the magnetization loss. Magnetization method is used for the measurement of the loss. Two types of the HTS tape model, multi-filamentary model and mono-filamentary model, are used to evaluate the magnetization loss in this paper. According to the results of the analysis, large discrepancy between the calculated and measured value is observed in multi-filamentary model is more useful than multi-filamentary model for the evaluation of the magnetization loss.

  • Recently, the needs and concerns for the power loss are increasing according to the energy conservation at the level of the national policies and power utilities's business strategies. Especially, the issue of the power loss is the main factor for the determining the electric pricing rates in the circumstances of the deregulation of electrical industry. However, because of the lacking of management for power loss load factors (LLF) it is difficult to make a calculation for the power loss and to make a decision for the electric rates. And loss factor (k-factor) in korea, which is a most important factor for calculation of the distribution power loss, has been used as a fixed value of 0.32 since the fiscal year 1973, There(ore, this study presents the statistical calculation methods of the loss factors classified by load types and seasons by using the practical data of 65 primary feeders which are selected by proper procedures. Based on the above the algorithms and methods, the optimal method of the distribution loss management classified by facilities such as primary feeders, distribution transformers and secondary feeders is presented. The simulation results show the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed methods.

  • A technique for a wear volume calculation is improved and verified in this research. The wear profile data measured by a surface roughness tester is used. The present technique uses a data flattening, the FFT and the windowing procedure, which is used for a general signal processing. The measured value of an average roughness of an unworn surfnce is used for the baseline of the integration for the volume calculation. The improvements from the previous technique are the procedures of the data flattening and the determination of a baseline. It is found that the flattening procedure efnciently manipulates the raw data when the levels of it are not horizontal, which enables us to calculate the volume reasonably well and readily. By comparing it with the weight loss method by using artificial dents, the present method reveals more volume by aroung 3~10%. It is attributed to the protruded region of the specimen and the inaccuracy and data averaging during the weght loss measurement. From a thorough investigation, it is concluded that the present technique can provide an accurate wear volume.

  • As increasing the failure of distribution transformers, we need to manage them efficiently. This paper proposes the method for distribution transformer's management using loss-of-life calculation. The Data Acquisition System(DAS) was developed to manage transformers and the HDLC protocol applied to the system. It will be feasible application to diagnose distribution transformers by checking load conditions such as top oil temperature, ambient temperature, load current, etc. and using loss-of-life calculation.
