A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood Thuja orientalis L., diffuse-porous wood Gmelina arborea Roxb., and ring-porous wood Phellodendron amurense Rupr., Longitudinal flow was considered from bottom to top while the radial flow was considered from bark to pith directions. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents(MC). The variation of penetration speed for different species was observed and the reasons behind for this variation were explored. The highest radial penetration depth was found in ray parenchyma of T. orientalis but the lowest one was found in ray parenchyma of P. amurense. The average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal trachied of T. orientalis was found the highest among all the other cells. The penetration depth in fiber of G. arborea was found the lowest among the other longitudinal cells. It was found that cell dimension and also meniscus angle of safranine solution with cell walls were the prime factors for the variation of liquid flow speed in wood. Vessel was found to facilitate prime role in longitudinal penetration for hardwood species. The penetration depth in vessel of G. arborea was found highest among all vessels. Anatomical features like ray parenchyma cell length and diameter, end-wall pits number were found also responsible fluid flow differences. Initially liquid penetration speed was high and the nit gradually decreased in an uneven rate. Liquid flow was captured via video and the penetration depths in those cells were measured. It was found that even in presence of abundant rays in hardwood species, penetration depth of liquid in radial direction of softwood species was found high. Herein the ray length, lumen area, end wall pit diameter determined the radial permeability. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Following a go-stop-go cycle, the penetration speed of a liquid decreased over time.
Vehicle acceleration data from an accelerometer and wheel speed data from standard, 50-tooth antilock braking system wheel speed sensors are used to estimate the absolute longitudinal speed of a vehicle. We develop the four velocity estimation algorithms. And we compare experimental results with the Butterworth filtered speed from the fifth wheel and find that it is possible to estimate absolute longitudinal vehicle speed during a hard braking maneuver lasting three seconds.
PURPOSES: The purpose of this study theoretically reviews vertical grade deriving process in super high speed environment and compares overseas design criteria with Domestic Standardization also draws suitable vertical grade design criteria of high standard for Domestic Circumstances in Korea. METHODS : By researching domestic vehicle registration status, calculating typical vehicle, using Vissim which is traffic simulation program, Speed-distance curve of the vehicle is derived under each design speed condition. Through Speed-distance curve, estimating critical length of grade and considering critical length of grade, maximum longitudinal incline is proposed. RESULTS : The result of domestic vehicle registration status, the typical vehicle for deriving vertical grade is calculated based on gravity horsepower ratio 200 lb/hp. For calculating critical length of grade, according to change speed of uphill entry, speed-distance curve is derived by using Vissim. Critical length of grade is calculated based on design speed 20 km/h criteria which is point of retardation. Estimated critical length of grade is 808 m and based on this result, maximum longitudinal incline was confirmed in the design speed between 130km/h to 140km/h. CONCLUSIONS: The case of the typical vehicle(truck) which is gravity horsepower ratio 200 lb/hp, maximum longitudinal incline 2% is desirable at the super high speed environment in the design speed between 130km/h to 140km/h.
Railway bridges have a significant effect on the stress and displacement of continuous welded rail(CWR). Longitudinal compression force at high temperature, combined breaking or acceleration forces can introduce track buckling. On the other hand, longitudinal tensile forces, associated with low temperatures, in combination with breaking forces may break rail. Therefore, it is very important to work out thorough counter measures for those problems, specially in high speed rail which high safety is required. The exact evaluation of longitudinal force of rail has the key to the solution. The main aim of the present paper is to examine whether the longitudinal force of CWR's on Kyung-Bu-HSR satisfy the criteria to be fulfilled in the design of railway bridge. The analyses are carried out by using "CWRAP" program which was developed by our research group. The ballast resistance and breaking force effects on the longitudinal force of CWR are investigated.
Recently, starting with the deep underground road construction plan in Seobu Expressway, Korea, there area many studies on deep underground roads to be newly built. However, there is an extreme lack of safety standards, which does not consider traffic conditions and road driving characteristics. Therefore, this study reviewed safety elements to reflect in the deep underground road planning by analyzing driving stability of longitudinal tunnels with road environments, which resemble deep underground roads. For comprehensive analysis, the characteristics and causes of the accidents that have occurred in seven longitudinal tunnels with a length of 2km or over in Gangwon area, were collected. Specifically, geometric structures and facilities of each tunnel were investigated. Also, the present state of facility installation and the changes in driving speed of vehicles passing through each tunnel were observed to analyze the causes for the traffic accidents in each tunnel and accident reduction alternatives. It was revealed that the most frequent accidents in the tunnels resulted from the changes of traffic flow due to the abrupt speed reduction of forward vehicles, or the failure in speed control of following vehicles during the traffic congestion situation. Moreover, installing facilities such as plane and longitudinal curves, median strips and marginal strips seem to induce consistent driving speed. These results mean that for accident prevention, speed management must be preceded and there is a need to develop and introduce safety facilities actively to control the driving flow of forward and following vehicles.
The longitudinal velocity (forward speed) having significant importance in proper running of railway wheelset on track, depends greatly upon the adhesion ratio and creep analysis by implementation of suitable dynamic system on contamination. The wet track condition causes slip and slide of vehicle on railway tracking, whereas high speed may also increase slip and skidding to severe wear and deterioration of mechanical parts. The basic aim of this research is to design appropriate model aimed estimator that can be used to control railway vehicle forward velocity to avoid slip. For the filtration of disturbance procured during running of vehicle, the kalman filter is applied to estimate the actual signal on preferered samples of creep co-efficient for observing the applied attitude of noise. Thus error level is detected on higher and lower co-efficient of creep to analyze adhesion to avoid slip and sliding. The skidding is usually occurred due to higher forward speed owing to procured disturbance. This paper guides to minimize the noise and error based upon creep coefficient.
The absolute longitudinal speed of a vehicle is estimated by using data from an accelerometer of the vehicle and wheel speed sensors of a standard 50-tooth antilock braking system. An intuitive solution to this problem is, 'When wheel slip is low, calculate the vehicle velocity from the wheel speeds; when wheel slip is high, calculate the vehicle speed by integrating signal of the accelerometer.' The speed estimator weighted with fuzzy logic is introduced to implement the above concept, which is formulated as an estimation method. And the method is improved through experiments by how to calculate speed from acceleration signal and slip ratios. It is verified experimentally to usefulness of estimation speed of a vehicle. And the experimental result shows that the estimated vehicle longitudinal speed has only a $6\%$ worst-case error during a hard braking maneuver lasting a few seconds.
Thermal expansion which occurs at the high speed rail joint is proportional to the free length from the point of fixity. This thermal expansion behaves similar to free expansion because the girder longitudinal stiffness is much larger than longitudinal resistance of rail pads. But the longitudinal displacement in the long rail is nominal because the longitudinal support condition of the girder is normally MFM(movable-fix-movable) system. Due to these girder expansion characteristics, there is longitudinal relative displacement at the rail pad and rail fastener spring which connects rail and girder. If the relative displacement between rail and girder is beyond the elastic limit for the rail pad, rail fastener system shall be applied using sliding fastener to prevent rail pad damage and fastener separation resulting from slip. On the other hand, train vertical vibration and tilting can occur due to the lack of fastener vertical force if the sliding fastener is applied at the girder joint. In the high speed rail bridge, vibration can occur due to the spring stiffness of the elastomeric bearing, also both vertical downward and upward displacement can occur. The elastomeric bearing vertical movement can cause rail displacement and finally the stability of the ballast is reduced because the gravel movement is induced.
A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood G. biloba, ring-porous wood A. altissima, and diffuse- porouswood D. kaki. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents (MC). The length, lumen diameter, pit diameter, end wall pit diameter and the numbers of end wall pits determined for the flow rate. The liquid flow in the those cells was captured via video and the capillary flow rate in the ones were measured. Vessel in hardwood species and tracheids in softwood was found to facilitate prime role in longitudinal penetration. Radial flow speed was found highest in ray parenchyma of G. biloba. Anatomical features like the length and diameter, end-wall pit numbers of ray parenchyma were found also responsible fluid flow differences. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of G. biloba was found the highest among all cells considered in D. kaki and A. altissima.
