  • Military rotorcrafts are constantly exposed to risk from bullet impacts because they operate in a battle environment. Because bullet impact damage can be deadly to crews, the fuel tanks of military rotorcraft must be designed taking extreme situations into account. Fuel tank design factors to be considered include the internal fluid pressure, the structural stress on the part impacted, and the kinetic energy of bullet strikes. Verification testing using real objects is the best way to obtain these design data effectively, but this imposes substantial burdens due to the huge cost and necessity for long-term preparation. The use of various numerical simulation tests at an early design stage can reduce the risk of trial-and-error and improve the prediction of performance. The present study was an investigation of the effects of bullet impacts on a fuel tank assembly using numerical simulation based on SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics), and conducted using the commercial package, LS-DYNA. The resulting equivalent stress, internal pressure, and kinetic energy of the bullet were examined in detail to evaluate the possible use of this numerical method to obtain configuration design data for the fuel tank assembly.

  • Because buildings recently built have been highly insulated and highly airtight, it is impossible to emit toxic substances from interior finishing materials only by natural ventilation. Therefore, they cause indoor air pollution and it may threaten the user"s health such as atopic dermatitis, bronchial asthma and (allergic) rhinitis. Domestically, users spend indoors 80 percent of their time of a day. With the increased interest in indoor air quality, the introduction of forced ventilation system for new-built apartment buildings has been legislated. However, toxic substances from indoor are mostly below there commended standard approximately 23 months later. Thus, this study has assumed the status of the apartment buildings 23 months later through a simulation, regarded $CO_2$ as an exclusive indoor air pollution source. In the process of effectively eliminating the $CO_2$, this study has also been conducted on an operating plan that can provide superior performance from the energy side.

  • It has been reported that long-term exercise on a treadmill (running machine) may cause injury to the joints in a human's lower extremities. Previous works related to analysis of human walking motion are, however, mostly based on clinical statistics and experimental methodology. This paper proposes an analytical methodology. Specifically, this work deals with a comparison of normal walking on the ground and walking on a treadmill in regard to the external and internal impulses exerted on the joints of a human's lower extremities. First, a modeling procedure of impulses, impulse geometry, and impulse measure for the human lower extremity model will be briefly introduced and a new impulse measure for analysis of internal impulse is developed. Based on these analytical tools, we analyze the external and internal impulses through a planar 7-linked human lower extremity model. It is shown through simulation that the human walking on a treadmill exhibits greater internal impulses on the knee and ankle joints of the supporting leg when compared to that on the ground. In order to corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, a force platform was developed to measure the external impulses exerted on the ground for the cases of the normal walking and walking on the treadmill. It is shown that the experimental results correspond well to the simulation results.

  • In recent years, many research works have been carried out in order to obtain a more controlled durability and long-term performance of concrete structures in chloride containing environments. In particular, the development of new procedures for probability-based durability analysis/design has proved to be very valuable. Although there is still a lack of relevant data, this approach has been successfully applied to some new concrete structures. In this paper, the equation used for modelling of the chloride penetration was based on Fick's Second Law of Diffusion in combination with a time dependent diffusion coefficient. The probability analysis of the durability performance was performed by use of a Monte Carlo Simulation. The procedure was applied to an example based on limited data gathered in this country. The influences of each parameter on the durability of concrete structures are studied and some comments for durability design are given. The new procedure may be very useful in designing an important concrete structures in chloride containing environments. Also it may help to predict the service life of concrete structures under a given probability of failure.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the GHP system with 150 energy piles for a commercial building. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of a sustainable performance of the system, simulations were conducted over 1-year and 20-year periods, respectively. The 1-year simulation results showed that the maximum and minimum temperatures of brine returning from the energy piles were $23.80^{\circ}C$ and $7.90^{\circ}C$, which were in a range of design target temperatures. In addition, after 20 years' operation, these returning temperatures decreased slowly to $23.05^{\circ}C$ and $6.98^{\circ}C$, and finally reached to stable state. The results also showed that the energy piles injected heat of 65.6 MWh to the ground and extracted heat of 96.0 MWh from the ground, respectively. Also, it is expected this GHP system with energy piles can operate with average SPF of more than 4.15 for long term.

  • In recent decades, the independence and identical distribution (iid) assumption for extreme events has been shown to be invalid in many cases because long-term climate variability resulting from phenomena such as the Pacific decadal variability and El Nino-Southern Oscillation may induce varying meteorological systems such as persistent wet years and dry years. Therefore, in the current study we propose a new parameter estimation method for probability distribution models to more accurately predict the magnitude of future extreme events when the iid assumption of probability distributions for large-scale climate variability is not adequate. The proposed parameter estimation is based on a metaheuristic approach and is derived from the objective function of the rth power probability-weighted sum of observations in increasing order. The combination of two distributions, gamma and generalized extreme value (GEV), was fitted to the GEV distribution in a simulation study. In addition, a case study examining the annual hourly maximum precipitation of all stations in South Korea was performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. The results of the simulation study and case study indicate that the proposed metaheuristic parameter estimation method is an effective alternative for accurately selecting the rth power when the iid assumption of extreme hydrometeorological events is not valid for large-scale climate variability. The maximum likelihood estimate is more accurate with a low mixing probability, and the probability-weighted moment method is a moderately effective option.

  • Self-Powered Neutron Detectors(SPNDs) are currently used to estimate the power generation distribution and fuel burn-up in several nuclear power reactors in Korea. In this paper, Monte Carlo simulation is accomplished to calculate the escape probability of beta particle as a function of their birth position fur the typical geometry of rhodium-based SPNDs. Also, a simple numerical method calculates the initial generation rate of beta particles and the change of generation rate due to rhodium burn-up. Using the simulation and the numerical method, the burn-up profile of rhodium density and the neutron sensitivity are calculated as a function of burn-up time in the reactor. The sensitivity of the SPNDs decreases non-linearly due to the high absorption cross-section and the non-uniform burn-up of rhodium in the emitter rod. In addition, for improvement of some properties of rhodium-based SPNDs which are currently used, this paper presents a new material. The method used here can be applied to the analysis of other types of SPNDs and will be useful in the optimum design of new SPNDs for long term usage.

  • Although recent reports suggest that the negative correlation between the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) has been strengthened, it is not clear whether this intermittent relationship is an intrinsic oscillation in the climate system. We investigate the oscillating behavior of the AO-EAWM relationship at decadal time scales using the long-term (500-yr) climate model simulation. The results show that ice cover over the East Siberian Seas is responsible for the change in the coupling strength between AO and EAWM. We found that increased ice cover over these seas strengthens the AO-EAWM linkage, subsequently enhancing cold advection over the East Asia due to anomalous northerly flow via a weakened jet stream. Thus, this strengthened relationship favors more frequent occurrences of cold surges in the EAWM region. Results also indicate that the oscillating relationship between AO and EAWM is a natural variability without anthropogenic drivers, which may help us understand the AO-EAWM linkage under climate change.

  • In the present study, the cavity module of the MELCOR code is used for the simulation of molten corium concrete interaction (MCCI) during the late phase of postulated large break loss of coolant (LB-LOCA) accident in the APR1400 reactor design. Using the molten corium composition data from previous MELCOR Simulation of APR1400 under LB-LOCA accident, the ex-vessel phases of the accident sequences with long-term MCCI are recalculated with stand-alone cavity package of the MELCOR code to investigate the impact of water ingression and melt eruption models which were hitherto absent in MELCOR code. Significant changes in the MCCI behaviors in terms of the heat transfer rates, amount of gases released, and maximum cavity ablation depths are observed and reported in this study. Most especially, the incorporation of these models in the new release of MELCOR code has led to the reduction of the maximum ablation depth in radial and axial directions by ~38% and ~32%, respectively. These impacts are substantial enough to change the conclusions earlier reached by researchers who had used the older versions of the MELCOR code for their studies. and it could also impact the estimated cost of the severe accident mitigation system in the APR1400 reactor.
