  • Long Period Gratings (LPG) is currently receiving considerable attention because of their consistent measuring results fur pressure, temperature, strain and flow. LPG is easier to prepare and has a high sensitivity compared with Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG). In addition, this kind of optical fiber sensors could be used for implementations in various structures. In this paper, LPG was used to monitor in situ the resin flow and the curing process in VARTM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer. Molding). In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, FBG is inserted into the glass mat to monitor the resin flow using optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). The curing reactions in VARTM are also observed using the same method. From the results, the attenuation wavelength shift and the loss change of attenuation band can be obtained from the status of the RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) sample owing to the internal variations of the .effective index, temperature, and pressure. It is shown that the proposed LPG is more effective in monitoring the curing reaction than FBG.

  • In this paper, we report numerically calculated results of testing a temperature-insensitive refractive sensor based on a planar-type long-period waveguide grating (LPWG). The LPWG consists of properly chosen polymer materials with an optimized thermo-optic coefficient for the core layer in a four-layer waveguide structure. The resonant wavelength shift below the spectral resolution of the conventional optical spectrum analyzer is obtained accurately over a temperature change of ${\pm}7.5^{\circ}C$ even without any temperature control. The refractive index sensitivity of the proposed grating scheme is about 0.004 per resonant wavelength shift of 0.1 nm for an optimized thermo-optic coefficient.

  • We propose a simple hydrogen detection scheme based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed with a pair of palladium-coated long-period fiber gratings (LPGs). Since an LPG pair offered a fine-structured interference fringe in its transmission spectrum, the resolution as a sensor could be appreciably enhanced compared to that of a single LPG. As the palladium layer absorbed hydrogen, the effective refractive indices of the cladding modes were increased so that the interference spectrum was blue-shifted up to 2.3 nm with a wavelength sensitivity of -0.29 nm/min for 4% of hydrogen concentration.

  • A photonic crystal fiber with two large air holes outside the holey cladding region is fabricated to induce an effective long periodic grating (LPG) in the core by an electric arc discharge. We believe that the two large air holes lead to the asymmetric perturbation in the core under the electric arc discharge, thereby introducing the coupling to the first higher-order mode. The transmission characteristics of the PCF with the LPG for the external perturbation such as strain, curvature, and temperature are also investigated. It was found that the shift of resonance peak in the transmission spectrum depends on the bending direction. The curvature of 8.55 $m^{-1}$ results in the center wavelength shifts of 1.8, 4.3, and 11 nm for a vertical, diagonal, and horizontal direction of the curvature to the large air-hole alignment, respectively.

  • Optical fiber gratings have been intensively studied for applications in optical fiber communications and sensor systems due to their all-fiber configuration, low insertion loss, low cost, and high flexibility. Especially, cladding mode coupling fiber devices such as long period gratings (LPG) and acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF) have been developed as a gain equalization filter in erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems$^{(1-2)}$ . • The fabrication process of thin boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond (B-NCD) microelectrodes on fused silica single mode optical fiber cladding has been investigated. The B-NCD films were deposited on the fibers using Microwave Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (MW PA CVD) at glass substrate temperature of 475 ℃. We have obtained homogenous, continuous and polycrystalline surface morphology with high sp3 content in B-NCD films and mean grain size in the range of 100-250 nm. The films deposited on the glass reference samples exhibit high refractive index (n=2.05 at λ=550 nm) and low extinction coefficient. Furthermore, cyclic voltammograms (CV) were recorded to determine the electrochemical window and reaction reversibility at the B-NCD fiber-based electrode. CV measurements in aqueous media consisting of 5 mM K3[Fe(CN)6] in 0.5 M Na2SO4 demonstrated a width of the electrochemical window up to 1.03 V and relatively fast kinetics expressed by a redox peak splitting below 500 mV. Moreover, thanks to high-n B-NCD overlay, the coated fibers can be also used for enhancing the sensitivity of long-period gratings (LPGs) induced in the fiber. The LPG is capable of measuring variations in refractive index of the surrounding liquid by tracing the shift in resonance appearing in the transmitted spectrum. Possible combined CV and LPG-based measurements are discussed in this work.

  • We report a technique that improves the spatial resolution of optical coherence tomography (OCT) by utilizing fiber-based spectral filtering. The proposed technique improves the resolution by filtering out the erbium’s characteristic peak from the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source spectrum, and reshaping the spectrum to Gaussian-like. We used a long period fiber grating (LPG) and an erbium doped fiber (EDF) absorber for the spectral filtering. An in-house made ASE source as well as a commercial ASE source [ASE-FL7002] was used as the OCT sources to study the proposed technique. The resolution of the OCT based on an in-house made ASE source is enhanced from 200 to 40 ㎛ with an LPG. While, the resolution of the OCT based on a commercial ASE source is enhanced from 25 to 19 ㎛ with the aid of an EDF absorber. However, sidelobes still exist in the interferogram due to imperfect spectral filtering, which limited the resolution. Further enhancement in the spatial resolution of the OCT system using the ASE source is possible with the aid of cascaded LPGs and/or carefully designed EDF absorber.
