Due to severe flooding, the long-term residence of turbidity flows within the stratified Daecheong Reservoir have lengthened. A long-term residence of turbidity flows within the stratified Daecheong Reservoir after floods has been major environmental issue. The objective of this study was to assess the impact to water supply from the hydrodynamics and turbidity outflow. Two gate operation scenarios were investigated. Scenario A refers to gate operations according to rainfall events, and scenario B refers to gate operations according to inflow. From the results of secenario A, the SS concentrations decreased from 0.44mg/l to 0.54mg/l at the front of the dam, whereas SS concentrations increased from 0.24mg/l to 1.24mg/l at the intake points at Munhi and Daejeon. From the results of scenario B, the SS concentrations decreased from 0.61mg/l to 0.83mg/l at the front of Dam; howeve, SS concentrations also decreased from 0.16mg/l to 0.48mg/l at the intake points at Munhi and Daejeon. It seems that it may be more efficient to control turbidity by creating additional outflows of generated discharge after intensive rainfalls than not.

This research introduces some preliminary results of bank filtering intake method adopted in Dalseo area, Nakdong River. This intake method has been planned to supply water resources of 41,000 ㎥/day to Goryeong-Gun and Seongju-Gun in 2016. It is believed that the bank filtering intake method can afford to supply 41,000 ㎥/day amount of water resources and that the raw water quality using the method has more advantages in water treatment than direct surface water intake. Even though the safety yield about individual vertical well is roughly estimated to about 2,000 ㎥/day, it is desirable to decrease the safety yield to about 1,000 ㎥/day in the consideration of long term and simultaneous well pumpings and other unknown factors. Ongoing study will give basic data and new techniques to solve the problems appearing in application of bank filtering method as well.
The present study was investigated the anti-oxidative effects of aloe vera ingestion on brain and kidney in aged rats by monitoring several oxidative-related parameters. Male specific pathogen-free Fischer 344 rats were randomly divided into four groups of five rat each: Group A was fed test chow without aloe supplementation; Group B was fed a diet containing a 1% freeze-dried aloe filet; Group C was fed a diet containing a 1% charcoal-processed, freeze-dried aloe filet; and Group D was fed a diet containing a charcoal-processed, freeze-dried, whole leaf aloe in drinking water. Analyses of tissues were done at 4 months and 16 months of age. Results showed that a long-term intake of aloe, regardless of the preparation used, enhanced antioxidant defenses against lipid peroxidation, as indicated by reduced phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxide levels in both brain and kidney. The additional benefit of aloe intake on the anti-oxidative action was evidenced by enhanced superoxide dismutase and catalase activity in all aloe-ingested groups. Another beneficial effect of aloe shown in this study, although not an anti-oxidative parameter, was its cholesterol-lowering effect as detected in brain and kidney with significant decreases at age16 months of aloe-fed rats. Based on these findings, we conclude that a long-term dietary aloe supplementation modulated the anti-oxidative defense systems and cholesterol level.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to report the effectiveness of Korean medicine in the treatment of functional dyspepsia in a fibromyalgia patient with a history of long-term NSAIDs use. Methods: The patient was diagnosed as a Soeumin, one of the four constitution types in Korean medicine, and treated with herbal medicines such as Seungyangikgibuja-tang and Pyeongjinsunjeom-san. Acupuncture and moxibustion treatment were also performed. The severity of symptoms was assessed using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) of epigastric pain, daily oral intake changes, the Korean Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (KGSRS), the Gastrointestinal Symptom Score (GIS), and the Functional Dyspepsia-Quality of Life (FD-QOL) score. Results: After treatment for 48 days, the severity of epigastric pain decreased from NRS 8 to NRS 0, and daily oral intake was increased. The KGSRS score decreased from 55 to 43, the GIS score was reduced from 18 to 10, and the FD-QOL score also decreased from 69 to 55. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medical treatment could be an effective option for treating functional dyspepsia in fibromyalgia patients with a history of long-term NSAIDs use.

We investigated dietary effects of green tea powder (GTP) on plasma lipids, platelet aggregation, hemolysis, plasma TBARS, and liver enzymes. Thirty one volunteer diving women living on Jeju island consumed 4 g green tea powder daily for a period of four weeks and data for the study subjects were analyzed on the basis of diagnostic criteria for blood pressure (BP)(${\geq}$ 140/90 mmHg), plasma total cholesterol (TC)(${\geq}$ 200 mg/dL), and triglyceride (TG)(${\geq}$ 150mg/dL). Subjects with high BP had significantly higher TC and TG than those with normal BP. Subjects with higher TC had higher TG, and those with higher TG had lower HDL cholesterol. Platelet aggregation in the initial slope was significantly higher in subjects with normal BP, normal TC, or normal TG than their counterparts in high BP, TC, and TG. HDL cholesterol after GTP intake increased only in subject groups with normal BP, normal TC, or normal TG, and plasma TG after GTP intake decreased only in groups with higher BP, higher TG, or higher TC. Plasma TC and TG in subjects with normal BP increased after GTP intake. GTP intake caused a decrease in the initial slope of platelet aggregation in all subject groups with little effect on maximum aggregation. Total bilirubin showed a significant increase and GOT increased in all subject groups after GTP intake. Beneficial effects of short term intake of green tea powder might differ depending on the subject conditions in terms of blood pressure, plasma lipids, and other cardiovascular conditions. However, with the hypolipidemic, antithrombotic, and antioxidant actions of its bioactive flavonoids, long term usage of GTP or brewed green tea may provide preventive effects against cardiovascular disease.
We examined the relationship among riboflavin intake, work activity, erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity coefficient(EGR AC)and urinary riboflavin excretion. We also attempted to determine factors affecting seasonal riboflavin status of rural women. All information about nutrient intake, work activity and riboflavin biochemical status was repeatly collected in three seasons ; farming season(June), harvest season(October), nonfarming season(February). EGR AC was negatively correlated with riboflavin intake(P<0.005) and positively correlated with the duration(min) of farming activity(P<0.005) and the percentage of lean body mass(LBM) (%) representing long term physical activity(P<0.05) in harvestseason. Urinary riboflavin excretion was positively correlated with the ratio of riboflavin intake to 1,000kcal of energy expenditure (P<0.05) in farming season and negatively correlated with the duration(min) of farming activity (P<0.05) and crude nitrogen balance(P<0.005) in harvest season. It appeared that EGR AC seems to increase and urinary riboflavin excretion seems to decrease as work activity increase. Therefore work activity would be expected to deteriorate riboflavin status. Multiple regression analysis of variables showed that in general EGR AC was affected by riboflavin and energy intakes, energy expenditure, energy balance, the duration(min) of farming activity, LBM (%). Urinary riboflavin excretion was affected by riboflavin and protein intakes, LBM(kg) and crude nitrogen balance. Crude nitrogen balance affected urinary riboflavin excretion in all seasons. The result indicated that work activity as well as nutrient intake seemed to affect riboflavin status, especially EGR AC was affected preferentially be work activity in all seasons.
The cholesterol-lowering effect of a fermented milk was studied for long-term period (56 weeks) in 206 Korean adults (106 normal cholesterol group and 100 hypercholesterol group) 300 $m\ell$ of the fermented milk was taken daily to all subjects for 10 weeks. 24 subjects drinking the fermented milk for 56 weeks and 42 subjects no-drinking for 40 weeks and then re-drinking from 50 th week for 6 weeks were followed up. Paired t-test, Duncan's multiple range test, and GLM repeated measure were used for statistical analysis. The level of total blood cholesterol and LDL after drinking the fermented milk for 10 weeks were decreased significantly in both group and affected by total cholesterol level at baseline, BMI, smoking and drinking. there is no significant change in triglyceride, HDL, and LDL/HDL ratio by drinking the fermented milk. The fermented milk intake for long-term period (56 weeks) did not show any more effect after 10 week on the level of TC, TG, HDL, LDL.
The study objects were to analyze long-term and seasonal variations of nutrients (N, P), suspended solids, N:P ratios, algal chlorophyll, and trophic state along with general water quality parameters in four sampling sites including two intake tower sites supplying drinking water in Daechung Reservoir. For the analysis, we used water quality long-term data sampled during 1998~2007 by the Ministry of Environment, Korea. Interannual and seasonal trends in inflow and discharge near the intake tower facilities over the ten years were directly influenced by rainfall pattern. The distinct difference between wet year (2003) and dry year (2001) produced marked differences in water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, organic matter contents, nutrients, and these variables influenced algal biomass and trophic state. Values of TP varied depending on the year and locations sampled, but monthly mean TP always peaked during July~August when river inflow and precipitation were maxima. In contrast, TN varied little compared to TP, indicating lower influence by seasonal flow compared to phosphorus. The number of E. coli were highest in Site 2 (Chudong intake tower) and varied largely, whereas at other sites, the numbers were low and low variations. Contents of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ (CHL), as an estimation of primary productivity, varied largely depending on the year and season. The maximum of CHL occurred at Muneu intake tower (S4) during 2006 when the precipitation and inflow were lowest. In contrast, another CHL peak was observed in Site 2 (Chudong intake tower) in 2006 when one of the largest typoons (Ewinia) occurred and river runoff were maximum. So the CHL maxima were associated with both wet year (high flow, high nutrient supply) and dry year (low flow, nutrient supply by littoral zone). Such conditions influenced trophic states, based on Trophic State Index of nutrients and CHL. Based on all analyses, we can provide some clues for management and protection strategies of two intake tower sites.
To evaluate long-term metabolic response of free-living Korean subjects consuming local sources adequately or slightly below habitual intake. Subjects, six male medical students aged 23-25 years were free-living, but consumed diets in the metabolic unit. They were healthy as determined from medical laborarory tests. They belong to the Korean middle-class. Temperature of outdoor during study were ranged between -2 to $26^{\circ}C$, whereas the indoor were $18-22^{\circ}C$. Animal protein ranged between 25-30% of total calorie. The three meals and a vitamin supplement to meet recommendation were given daily. Three 50day periods following the design were used to test the protein-energy adequacy of the diet. Urinary nitrogen excretion was measured daily. Fecal samples were pooled for the last 5 days of each week. Nitrogen balance was computed using 5mg N/Kg skin and miscellaneous losses. Body weight was measured daily. The study was covered on 126 metabolic observations weekly. Body weight changes were relatively stable with the energy intake of 37-44Kca1/kg, and N-balances were also relatively stable, but it was influenced by physical and or mental stress somehow. It could be assumed that the mean protein and energy requirement were $190{\pm}10mg$ N/Kg with $41{\pm}2$ Kcal/kg, and the mean digestibility of protein was 81% on these subjects with the experimental conditions. The protein requirement, however, could be cut down somewhat with some limited increaing of energy intake under parameters of N-balance and maintaining body weight. It was also observed a tendency of the requirement were getting smaller with the increase of body size.
Antibiotics are frequently administered during pregnancy. Although necessary to address acute infections, their use facilitates antibiotic resistance. Other associations have also been found with the use of antibiotics, such as perturbations of gut bacteria, delays in microbial maturation, and increased risks of allergic and inflammatory diseases. Little is known about how the prenatal and perinatal administration of antibiotics to mothers affects the clinical outcomes of their offspring. A literature search was conducted of the Cochrane, Embase, and PubMed engines. The retrieved articles were reviewed by two authors and verified for relevance. The primary outcome was the effect of pre- and perinatal maternal antibiotic use on clinical outcomes. Thirty-one relevant studies were included in the meta-analysis. Various aspects are discussed, including infections, allergies, obesity, and psychosocial factors. In animal studies, antibiotic intake during pregnancy has been suggested to cause long-term alterations in immune regulation. In humans, associations have been found between antibiotic intake during pregnancy and different types of infections and an increased risk of pediatric infection-related hospitalization. A dose-dependent positive association between pre- and perinatal antibiotic use and asthma severity has been reported in animal and human studies, while positive associations with atopic dermatitis and eczema were reported by human studies. Multiple associations were identified between antibiotic intake and psychological problems in animal studies; however, relevant data from human studies are limited. However, one study reported a positive association with autism spectrum disorders. Multiple animal and human studies reported a positive association between pre- and perinatal antibiotic use by mothers and diseases in their offspring. Our findings have potentially significant clinical relevance, particularly considering the implications for health during infancy and later in life as well as the related economic burden.
