  • FTIR, FT-Raman, and X-ray diffraction techniques were used to determine chain segregations and lamellar structures of the mixed binary n-paraffins with different chain lengths. The results of three different techniques, infrared spectroscopic studies of crystal field splitting, the Raman longitudinal acoustic mode, and the SAXS long period measurements were compared one another to understand the crystallization mechanism of separated or mixed n- paraffin lamellae.

  • Linear sausage oscillations of a cylinder embedded in a plasma with an azimuthal magnetic field, created by a current on the surface of the cylinder, are studied. Such a plasma configuration could be applied to modelling demonstrate that the lowest radial harmonic of the sausage mode is in the trapped regime for all values of the parallel wave number. In the long-wavelength limit, phase and group speeds of this mode are equal to the Alfven speed in the external medium. It makes the oscillation period to be determined by the ratio of the parallel wavelength, e.g., double the length of an oscillating loop, to the external Alfven speed, allowing for its seismological estimations. The application of the results obtained to the interpretation of long-period (longer than 20-30 s) oscillations of emission intensity detected in solar coronal structure, gives reasonable estimations of the external Alfven speed. Cutoff values of the parallel wavenumber for higher radial harmonics are determined analytically. Implications of this finding to the observational signatures of fast magnetoacoustic wave trains guided by the plasma non-uniformity are discussed.

  • As an effort to clarify the ecosystem of Osaka Bay, a semi-enclosed coastal area under the influence of stratification, a three-dimensional water quality model with combination of the baroclinic flow model and primitive eco-system model was constructed. The proposed model succeeded in simulating the time-depending flow and density structure and the baroclinic residual currents in Osaka Bay. In present study, we tried to improve the model by taking account of the benthic-pelagic interaction and exchange of nutrients between sea bottom sediments and overlaying water. On vertical structure, the model consists of 13 layers of water and eight layers of sediments. Long-term prediction of water quality was conducted from 1964 to 1985. This period is characterized by rapid water pollution and its decrease by the cutoff reduction of COD and P flowed into Osaka Bay. By combining the sediment model into original model, the numerical model was confirmed to shows more reasonable results in simulating the water quality in Osaka Bay.

  • Recently, it has been reported that number of earthquakes was rapidly increased in the Korean Peninsula. According to the interest of seismic analysis, most of construction design must ensure the stability of structure against risks due to earthquake. Therefore, the ground reinforcement and application of seismic standards is necessary and the new structures must secure a stability about Earthquake under the Korea Seismic Analysis Standards. In this study, the 2D numerical analysis was performed to confirm a seismic stability and analysed that behavior of ground and dykes. The numerical seismic response analyses for dykes and its foundation soil were conducted with considering earthquake modes of short-period and long-period, and artificial seismic wave.

  • One of the most important problems in ADS method is that the method has too long addressing period, The addressing time can be defined as the sum of the discharge time lag and the duration of discharge current. If the addressing time increases, the sustaining period for display image should be decreased. As a result, the luminance of the PDP decreases. Therefore, the discharge time lag and duration of discharge current should be decreased in order to reduce the addressing time. In this paper, in order to improve addressing time, relationships between addressing time and cell structure in AC PDP was studied

  • Protection characteristics of the corroded steel pile which was served as a pier structure over 8 years in seawater have been examined in terms of corrosion potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and anodic/cathodic polarization curves. The steel structure was sectioned into two parts, waterline(splash zone, just above the seawater surface) and in-water(underwater), and protection characteristics for the two parts were investigated with the application of cathodic protection(CP) by sacrificial anodes using Zn and Al alloys. The main results obtained were as follows; (1) The corrosion potential of waterline zone was higher than that of in-water, which implied that the corrosion of waterline was more severe than that of in-water, (2) As a result of EIS examination, the transition period from the apparent CP to the substantial CP took about twenty to thirty days according to the corrosion condition.

  • Steel corrosion in embedded steel causes a significant durability problems and this usually propagates to structural degradation. Large-scaled concrete structures, PSC (Pre-stressed Concrete) or RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures, are usually constructed with mass concrete and require quite a long construction period. When they are located near to sea shore, chloride ion penetrates into concrete through direct or indirect exposure to marine environment, and this leads durability problems. Even if the structures are sheltered from chloride ingress outside after construction, the chloride contents which have been penetrated into concrete during the long construction period are differently evaluated from the initially mixed chloride content. In the study, chloride profiles in cores extracted from anchorage concrete block in two large-scaled suspension bridge (K and P structure) are evaluated considering the exposure periods and conditions. Total 21 cores in tendon room and chamber room were obtained, and the acid-soluble chlorides and compressive strength were evaluated for the structures containing construction period around 3 years. The test results like diffusion coefficient and surface chloride content from the construction joint and cracked area were also discussed with the considerations for maintenance.

  • Recently, Korea's electric industry is in the midst of a period of profound changes in the structure and function, including the introduction of market competition in the generation sector. Therefore, it is difficult to promote long-term capacity planning and new generating capacity construction which have been driven by KEPCO so far, after the introduction of market competition, so new generating capacity construction and security of reserve margin is needed through self·regulation plan of private generation producers by market mechanism. According to the competition in the generation sector, a new paradigm is necessary to the long-term capacity planning driven by the Government. This paper analyzes the plan and the incentive level able to guide the new generation capacity construction considering the uncertainty risk in a period of introduction of competition. In addition, this paper analyzes the plan able to guide the new capacity construction by market function at the stage which market become established and Government's role to solve the anxiety about the capacity supply and demand.

  • In this paper, attaching various damping plates to the cylindrical structure and performing numerical simulations try to study heave RAO and natural period for cylinder. Most of all, we identified heave RAO of the cylinder by simulations of the motion and the wave. And then, we performed numerical simulations by changing the size and shape of heave damping plate attached to the cylinder and reviewed the heave RAO and natural period for each case. The conclusions of this research are as follows. Firstly, the natural period of cylindrical structure is increased by attached to the cylinder with heave damping plate and the heave RAO of cylindrical structure is reduced in the peak period for incident wave by attached to the cylinder with from the size of 1.30D for heave damping plate. Secondly, circular plate has long natural period than Y-type plate in all of these sections. Finally, the motion response spectrum considering the marine environment of Piranema field was identified as the heave motion of cylindrical structure is remarkably reduced with both circular plate and Y-type plate in the peak period for incident wave.

  • Researchers up to date have introduced several Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques with varying advantages and drawbacks for each. Satellite positioning systems (GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO) based techniques proved to be promising, especially for high natural period structures. Particularly, the GPS has proved sufficient performance and reasonable accuracy in tracking real time dynamic displacements of flexible structures independent of atmospheric conditions, temperature variations and visibility of the monitored object. Tall structures are particularly sensitive to oscillations produced by different sources of dynamic actions; such as typhoons. Wind forces induce in the structure both longitudinal and perpendicular displacements with respect to the wind direction, resulting in torsional effects, which are usually more complex to be detected. To efficiently track the horizontal rotations of the in-plane sections of such flexible structures, two main issues have to be considered: a suitable sensor topology (i.e., location, installation, and combination of sensors), and the methodology used to process the data recorded by sensors. This paper reports the contributions of the measurements recorded from dual frequency GPS receivers and uni-axial accelerometers in a full-scale experimental campaign. The Canton tower in Guangzhou-China is the case study of this research, which is instrumented with a long-term structural health monitoring system deploying both accelerometers and GPS receivers. The elaboration of combining the obtained rather long records provided by these two types of sensors in detecting the torsional behavior of the tower under ambient vibration condition and during strong wind events is discussed in this paper. Results confirmed the reliability of GPS receivers in obtaining the dynamic characteristics of the system, and its ability to capture the torsional response of the tower when used alone or when they are combined with accelerometers integrated data.
