  • The increase of impervious surface and development along the river due to urbanization not only causes an increase in the number of associated flood risk factors but also exacerbates flood damage, leading to difficulties in flood management. Flood control measures should be prioritized based on various geographical information in urban areas. In this study, a probabilistic flood hazard assessment was applied to flood-prone areas near an urban river. Flood hazard maps were alternatively considered and used to describe the expected inundation areas for a given set of predictors such as elevation, slope, runoff curve number, and distance to river. This study proposes a Bayesian logistic regression-based flood risk model that aims to provide a probabilistic risk metric such as population-at-risk (PAR). Finally, the logistic regression model demonstrates the probabilistic flood hazard maps for the entire area.

  • A procedure is proposed to identify multiple outliers in the logistic regression. It detects the leverage points by means of hierarchical clustering of the robust distances based on the minimum covariance determinant estimator, and then it employs a V-mask type criterion on the scatter plot of robust residuals against robust distances to classify the observations into vertical outliers, bad leverage points, good leverage points, and regular points. Effectiveness of the proposed procedure is evaluated on the basis of the classic and artificial data sets, and it is shown that the procedure deals very well with the masking and swamping effects.

  • Background: Solitary pulmonary nodules (SPN) are encountered incidentally in 0.2% of patients who undergo chest X-ray or chest CT. Although SPN has malignant potential, it cannot be treated surgically by biopsy in all patients. The first stage is to determine if patients with SPN require periodic observation and biopsy or resection. An important early step in the management of patients with SPN is to estimate the clinical pretest probability of a malignancy. In every patient with SPN, it is recommended that clinicians estimate the pretest probability of a malignancy either qualitatively using clinical judgment or quantitatively using a validated model. This study examined whether Bayesian analysis or multiple logistic regression analysis is more predictive of the probability of a malignancy in SPN. Methods: From January 2005 to December 2008, this study enrolled 63 participants with SPN at the Kangnam Sacred Hospital. The accuracy of Bayesian analysis and Bayesian analysis with a FDG-PET scan, and Multiple logistic regression analysis was compared retrospectively. The accurate probability of a malignancy in a patient was compared by taking the chest CT and pathology of SPN patients with <30 mm at CXR incidentally. Results: From those participated in study, 27 people (42.9%) were classified as having a malignancy, and 36 people were benign. The result of the malignant estimation by Bayesian analysis was 0.779 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.657 to 0.874). Using Multiple logistic regression analysis, the result was 0.684 (95% CI, 0.555 to 0.796). This suggests that Bayesian analysis provides a more accurate examination than multiple logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: Bayesian analysis is better than multiple logistic regression analysis in predicting the probability of a malignancy in solitary pulmonary nodules but the difference was not statistically significant.

  • The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyse the behavior patterns of the first and the repeated offenders in DWI, and to develope the models of BAC(Blood Alcohol Concentration) by using multiple regression analysis method and a model of repeated DWI conviction by using logistic regression analysis method. The main results are as follows. First, the repeated offenders are more in criminal and traffic accidents records than that of the first offenders. The unlicenced drivers are in higher BAC than licenced drivers. Second, multiple regression model of BAC was developed, and the model revealed that criminal records and driving distance were important factors. Third, a model of repeated DWI conviction was developed, and the model revealed that traffic accidents records, whether or not having licence, and criminal records were most important factors.

  • Objectives: This is one of the first efforts to describe incidence of alcohol-related problems and to identify environmental correlates associated with them among colleges. Methods: Date were collected by a sample of 105 college administrators who are in charge of student affairs in colleges nationwide through self-administrated questionnaire. Both logistic and linear multiple regression analyses were employed to identify the correlates associated with alcohol-related problems. Results: Most of colleges(76.6%) under study reported to have at least one alcohol-related problem in previous years. Interpersonal violence was alcohol-related problem taken placed most frequently, followed by making noise episode, having property damaged and motor vehicle accidents. Logistic regression analysis identified factors associated with incidents of alcohol related problems. They included being private colleges, numbers of prevention activities, product promotion and marketing by alcohol industry and alcohol accessibility to drinking context. Multiple regression analyses showed that correlates associated with numbers of alcohol-related problems included being a private college, being located in rural area, having drinking density, product promotion and availability of alternative activities to drinking. Conclusions: Environmental correlates were associated with incidence of alcohol related problems in colleges nationwide. Policy implications were discussed.

  • The development of new media has gradually decreased the use of newspapers, which had previously occupied the largest share of media. Subscriptions have declined gradually and fell to 14 percent in 2016. This study explores the effects of Newspaper reader's characteristics on regular newspaper subscriptions. The data used for analysis was provided by the Korean Press Foundation and Media Audience Awareness Survey Data in 2016 and 2017. We considered gender, age, education, income, number of days of reading, reading time and amount of reading as the characteristics of the reader. Multiple logistic regression was fitted and interpreted to see what characteristics affect regular subscription.

  • Purposes: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between risk behaviors and smoking in Korean adolescents. Methods: This study used data from online survey of youth health behavior in 2017. Data from a total of 54,411 people (27,139 male, 27,272 female) were included in the analysis. chi-square test, simple logistic regression, multiple logistic regression were performed using SAS 9.4. Findings: Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that risk behaviors such as drinking alcohol experience, sexual experience, drug use experience and high caffeine energy drinks intake experience had a significant effect on smoking. Adolescents with drinking experience were more likely to smoking than those who had no experience(OR=8.58, 95% CI: 7.67~9.60). Adolescents with sexual experience were more likely to smoking than those who had no experience(OR=4.47, 95% CI: 3.91~5.11). Adolescents with drug use experience were more likely to smoking than those who had no experience(OR=2.32, 95% CI: 1.63~3.32). Also, adolescents with high-caffeine energy drinks intake experience were more likely to smoking than those who had no experience(OR=1.37, 95% CI: 1.23~1.53). Practical Implications: All the risk behaviors were significantly associated with smoking rates. Results of this study suggest that physicians and health workers in medical institutions and health centers should simultaneously serve education and consultation for the smoking cessation as well as for the prevention of risk behaviors.

  • Multiple regression and stepwise logistic regression was conducted to examine the relationships of work conditions, individual characteristics, and burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal fulfillment). Subjects were 144 early childhood educators. Teachers most likely to leave the profession were more educated, has less teaching experience and reported higher levels of burnout (i.e. high emotional exhaustion and lower personal fulfillment). Turnover was also predicted by high depersonalization, lower personal fulfillment, working overtime, and perceived choice of other jobs. Implications of these results for early childhood programs were discussed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of falls and identify risk factors associated with falls. Methods: The participants were 233 community-dwelling elderly people in two cities. Data were collected by interviewing the elderly with structured questionnaires from May to June, 2012. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression were performed using SPSS version 17.0. Results: Age, educational level, living arrangement, health status, the use of assistive devices, the number of medication, hypertension, arthralgia, dizziness, fall efficacy, fear of falling, activity of daily living, and quality of life were significant associated with fall experience. Through multiple logistic regression analysis, arthralgia, dizziness, fall efficacy, and fear of falling were identified as significant predictors of falls. Conclusion: It is important to identify the risk factors for falls among the elderly living in community. Fall prevention interventions should be multifactorial, especially for the elderly who were identified as the high risk group.
