One of the most important missons that are imposed on merchant ship at sea is to accomplish the safe transportation of cargo loaded. Recently, a study on the seakeeping performance has been carried out on the development of evaluation system related to the synthetic safety of a ship at sea. The seakeeping performance is the ship's ability sailing at, and executing its misson against adverse environmental factors successfully and safely. Until now, however, there has not been any method of quantitative evaluation on the dynamic safety of the ship's cargo loaded. In this regards, this paper has introduced the evaluation method of dynamic safety of the ship's cargo. In order to evaluate the dynamic safety of cargo, the vertical and lateral acceleration which causes the collapse, racking and local structure failure of cargo was adopted as the evaluation factors in the ship's motions. The response amplitude of ship's motions in regular waves is manipulated by NSM (New Strip Method) on a given 2,700 TEU full container vessel under the wind forces of 7, 8 and 9 Beaufort scale. Each response of ship's motions induced by NSM was applied to short-crested irregular waves for stochastic process on evaluation factors and then vertical and lateral acceleration of each cargo was compared with significant amplitude of each acceleration. A representative dangerous factor was determined by comparing permissible values of stacking and racking forces occurred typically to the vertical and transverse directions with the container strength required on ISO 1496 at the positions of forecastle, poop and ship's midship respectively. Through the occurrence probability of the determined factor by Rayleigh's probability density function, the dangerousness which limits loads on container's side wall as an evaluation was applied in judging of the danger of the ship's cargo loaded.
In view of the importance of material reduction because of the jump in oil and steel prices, structural design studies for lifting lugs were performed. Hundreds of thousands of such lifting lug structures are needed every year for ship construction. A direct design study was reviewed using the developed design system to increase the design efficiency and provide a way of directly inserting a designer's decisions into the design system process. In order to understand the design efficiency and convenience of a lug structure, parametric studies for prototype lug shapes were performed using the developed design system. From these design studies, various patterns of design parameters for the lug structure according to changes in the main plate length were examined. Based on these parametric study results, design guides were developed for more efficiently suggesting structural data for enormous lug structures. Additionally, a more detailed structural analysis through local strength evaluations will be performed to verify the efficiency of the optimum structural design for a lug structure.

The Lashing bridge and radar mast of ship are upright structures so they are generally exposed to excessive vibration. Recently, the use of low speed main engines for improving fuel efficiency has been increasing, and the excitation frequencies of the main engine are moving to the low frequency band. If the excitation frequencies are coincident with the natural frequencies of the local structure, excessive vibration occurs during main engine operating condition. The modal test is to experimentally determine resonance frequency, mode shape, and damping, which are vibration characteristics of a mechanical structure under dynamic external force. Through this study, the vibration characteristics of the structure are obtained by modal tests and the low vibration measure is applied to the local structures.
In view of the importance of material reduction and rational structural design due to the rapid increase in oil and steel prices, an optimized structural hybrid design system for the doubler plate of a ship's hull structure was developed. A direct design process by a structural designer was added to this developed optimized system to increase the design efficiency and provide a way of directly inserting a designer's decisions into the design system process. As the first step of the doubler design system development, the design formulas used in doubler design system were introduced. Based on the introduction of influence coefficients $K_{t_c}$$K_{t_d}$, $K_{b_d}$ and $K_{a_d}$ according to the variations in the doubler length, breadth, doubler thickness, and average corrosion thickness of the main plate, the design formulas for an equivalent plate thickness were developed, and a hybrid design system using these formulas was suggested for the slender doubler plate of a ship structure subjected to a longitudinal in-plane compression load. By using this developed design system, a more rational doubler plate design can be expected considering the efficient reinforcement of the plate members of ship structures. Additionally, a more detailed structural analysis through local strength evaluations will be performed to verify the efficiency of the optimum structural design for the doubler plate.

In the ship and offshore structure design, age-related problems such as corrosion damage, local denting, and fatigue damage are important factors to be considered in building a reliable structure as they have a significant influence on the residual structural capacity. In shipping, corrosion addition methods are widely adopted in structural design to prevent structural capacity degradation. The present study focuses on the historical trend of corrosion addition rules for ship structural design and investigates their effects on the ultimate strength performance such as hull girder and stiffened panel of double hull oil tankers. Three types of rules based on corrosion addition models, namely historic corrosion rules (pre-CSR), Common Structural Rules (CSR), and harmonised Common Structural Rules (CSR-H) are considered and compared with two other corrosion models namely UGS model, suggested by the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), and Time-Dependent Corrosion Wastage Model (TDCWM). To identify the general trend in the effects of corrosion damage on the ultimate longitudinal strength performance, the corrosion addition rules are applied to four representative sizes of double hull oil tankers namely Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax, and VLCC. The results are helpful in understanding the trend of corrosion additions for tanker structures.

The interest in evaluation of structural intensity arises for practical reasons, because net energy flow distribution offers information of energy transmission path, positions of sources, and sinks of vibration energy. In this paper, structural intensity analysis of local ship structures using finite element method(FEM) is carried out. The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate the relative accuracy according to mesh fineness. The structural intensity of unstiffened and stiffened plates varying their mesh fineness is analyzed and the results are compared with those obtained by the assumed mode method. As results, the proper mesh size in qualitative/quantitative structural intensity analysis of plate structures is proposed. In addition, the propagation phenomenon of vibration energy is investigated for the thickness-varying flat plate, L-type plate, and box-girder structures.

High speed planning boats also have been required more and more the rational strength analysis and evaluation for the optimal structural design in respect of the structural lightness according to the high speed trend. Even though the suggestion of the simple type equation for the equivalent dynamic pressure is reasonable to design the scantling of ship structure conveniently, many research activities for more reasonable improvement of the simple design pressure, have been continued to suggest the more accurate equivalent static description of tire structural response such as the deflection and stress of hull structure. In this research, we focus on the aluminum bottom stiffened plate structure in which structural scantling is mainly depend on the local loads such as dynamic or impact pressure without other load effects and structural response for the simple dynamic equivalent pressure was investigated through the structural analysis. In order to investigate the structural response of the bottom stiffened plate structure subjected to the dynamic equivalent design pressure, linear and nonlinear structural analysis of the bottom stiffened plate structure of 4.3 ton aluminum planning boat was performed based on the equivalent static applied loads which were derived from the KR regulation and representative one among various dynamic equivalent pressure equations. From above analysis results, we found that the response such as deflection and stress of plate member was similar with the response results of one plate member model with fixed boundary, which was published previous paper and in case of KR design loading, all response of stiffened plate structure were within elastic limit. Through the nonlinear analysis, nearly elastic behavior including the slight geometrical nonlinear response was dominant but plastic local zone was appeared at $85\%$ limit load. Therefore, we can say that through tire linear and nonlinear analysis, this stiffened plate member has no structural strength problem based on the yield criteria in case within $60\%$ limit load except the other strength point of view such as the fatigue and buckling problem.
Ship Blocks are assembled by welding, and among them, welding between large blocks (Pre-erection stage) is used as feature of butt. In this process, local material has a experience of thermal cycle and become finally shrunk. As for inconsistency of shrunk weldments and adjacent regions, ship structure would be deformed locally and globally. Thermal distortion analyses are done for control of these processes, and methodologies capable of ship block size among them are using 2-D shell element in FEM. A shell element takes charge of plate, so it has its thickness which is important for angular distortion by welding. By the way, a butt-welding consists normally of several passes, and weldment thickness are different at each pass. If a calculated final one-time welding shrinkage is acting on the shell element whose thickness is same as it of plate, then deformation value must be underestimated. This research developed a methodology that total deformation after multi-pass welding can be analyzed by one time at shell element having original thickness of its plate. We use the SDB thermal distortion analysis method and verified by several experiment. The both experimental and analysis results showed good agreements.

Recently, the development of the Marina port is determined as a national plan, and a variety of leisure boats and facilities on the field has been of critical interest. In particular, yachts are designed and produced mostly at small shipbuilding companies and research institute. The regulation and historic data, however, about the safety of structure are not readily available. Therefore, it is required to evaluate the strength of ship structure. This paper deals with the estimation of local strength of 40 feet sailing yacht by using finite element analysis. The forebody, mast and connection parts of a FRP yacht structure are evaluated. In addition, the results are compared with the regulation of Lloyd's register and Korean register.

This paper is about the bow structure design of the ship-typed and turret moored FPSO which is subjected to the bow-flare slamming load in harsh North Sea environments. Quad 204 FPSO project involves the redevelopment of the existing Schiehallion FPSO which is damaged by impact wave loads. Normally all offshore systems including FPSO are designed to withstand the 100 year storm I.e. the storm that happens once every hundred years at the location where the system is installed. Several incidents have revealed that impact loading is important issue for moored floating production systems. In this paper, the design impact loads are estimated considering the ship owner’s specification, measured data from model tests, requirements of the classification society rules and results of numerical simulation analyses. The impact pressure by numerical analysis is 1.8 times greater than required value by CSR adopted by IACS. Based on the selected design load, plastic design formulae allowing the local material yielding are applied for the initial scantling of the bow structure. To verify the structural integrity, FE analyses are carried out considering the local area subjected to the impact wave loads. Their results such as structural arrangement, design loads and scantlings are shown and discussed. It is found that plastic design formulae in adopting Initial design phase give sufficiently conservative results in terms of structural strength.
