  • The main purpose of this paper is the numerical analysis of the non-linear seismic response of a RC building mock-up. The mock-up is subjected to different synthetic horizontal seismic excitations. The numerical approach is based on a 3D-model involving multilayered shell elements. These elements are composed of several single-layer membranes with various eccentricities. Bending effects are included through these eccentricities. Basic equations are first written for a single membrane element with its own eccentricity and then generalised to the multilayered shell element by superposition. The multilayered shell is considered as a classical shell element : all information about non-linear constitutive relations are investigated at the local scale of each layer, whereas balance and kinematics are checked afterwards at global scale. The non-linear dynamic response of the building is computed with Newmark algorithm. The numerical dynamic results (blind simulations) are considered in the linear and non linear cases and compared with experimental results from shaking table tests. Multilayered shell elements are found to be a promising tool for predictive computations of RC structures behaviour under 3D seismic loadings. This study was part of the CAMUS International Benchmark.

  • Seismic structure pounding between adjacent superstructures may induce the destruction of pier and bridge superstructures and cause local damage that leads to the collapse of the whole bridge system. The pounding problem is related to the expansion of joints, gap distance and seismic response of the abutments. In this research, methods of the contact element approach, the linear spring model, the Kelvin-Voigt model and the Hertz model were studied to analyse the pounding characteristics. The shaking table test for a model specimen such as a bridge superstructure with elastomeric bearings was performed to evaluate the contact element approach methods. Relationships between the time history response from the numerical analysis results and the measured response from the shaking table test are compared. The experimental results were not well matched with the numerical analysis results using the existing pounding stiffness models. Therefore, in this study, coefficients are proposed to calculate the appropriate pounding stiffness ratio.

  • As a result of rapid advances in communication technology, fiber optics have begun to be adopted in most telecommunication systems 3s an economic choice Due to the trend of evolution toward broadband communication network with fiber optics and electronic devices. the network design problem for broadband communication has been received a great deal of research attention recently. In this paper, we address a topological design problem for broadband local access network with uncertain demands, which has received surprisingly little attention so far. in our problem, we select a set of hubs and links for constructing network expected penalty cost for the amount of undersupplied In addition to the usual cost terms of the fixed demand problem Our problem can be approximated as a mixed 0-1 integer programming problem by using Szwarc’s linear approximation technique. Then the problem is transformed successfully into a version of classical network design model. Some computational experiments for the model and concluding remarks are described.

  • Compared to conventional flat web I-beams, the prediction of shear buckling stress of corrugated web steel beams (CWSBs) is not straightforward. But the CWSBs combined advantages of lightweight large spans with low-depth high load-bearing capacities justify dealing with such difficulties. This work investigates experimentally and analytically the shear strength of trapezoidal CWSBs. A set of large scale CWSBs are manufactured and tested to failure in shear. The results are compared with widely accepted CWSBs shear strength prediction models. Confirmed by the experimental results, the linear buckling analyses of trapezoidal corrugated webs demonstrated that the local shear buckling occurs only in the flat plane folds of the web, while the global shear buckling occurs over multiple folds of the web. New analytical prediction model accounting for the interaction between the local and global shear buckling of CWSBs is proposed. Experimental results from the current work and previous studies are compared with the proposed analytical prediction model. The predictions of the proposed model are significantly better than all other studied models. In light of the dispersion of test data, accuracy, consistency, and economical aspects of the prediction models, the authors recommend their proposed model for the design of CWSBs over the rest of the models.

  • Hadron therapy, such as carbon and helium ions, is increasingly coming to the fore for the treatment of cancers. Such hadron therapy has several advantages over conventional radiotherapy using photons and electrons physically and clinically. These advantages are due to the different physical and biological characteristics of heavy ions including high linear energy transfer and Bragg peak, which lead to the reduced exit dose, lower normal tissue complication probability and the increased relative biological effectiveness (RBE). Despite the promising prospects on the carbon ion radiation therapy, it is in dispute with which bio-mathematical models to calculate the carbon ion RBE. The two most widely used models are local effect model and microdosimetric kinetic model, which are actively utilized in Europe and Japan respectively. Such selection on the RBE model is a crucial issue in that the dose prescription for planning differs according to the models. In this study, we aim to (i) introduce the concept of RBE, (ii) clarify the determinants of RBE, and (iii) compare the existing RBE models for carbon ion therapy.

  • In this study, we examine business start-up and closing business in a geographical context. In particular, we analyze the geographical characteristics of business start-up and closing business according to the type of industry. For the purpose, we use the last 10 years data that have been related with current economic situation since the financial crisis. In first, we identify the spatial distribution patterns of business start-up and closing business, We examine the difference between individual businesses and corporations. Finally, we construct general linear regression models and spatial regression models for them, and derive meaningful socioeconomic variables that explain their location distribution. The results of this study could provide basic data for regional planning of national and local governments that activate local economies as well as job creation.

  • The paper presents results of FE-calculations on shear localizations in quasi-brittle materials during both an uniaxial plane strain compression and uniaxial plane strain extension. An elasto-plastic model with a linear Drucker-Prager type criterion using isotropic hardening and softening and non-associated flow rule was used. A non-local extension was applied in a softening regime to capture realistically shear localization and to obtain a well-posed boundary value problem. A characteristic length was incorporated via a weighting function. Attention was focused on the effect of mesh size, mesh alignment, non-local parameter and imperfections on the thickness and inclination of shear localization. Different methods to calculate plastic strain rates were carefully discussed.

  • A small number of active galactic nuclei are known to exhibit prominent double peak emission profiles indicating the presence of a relativistic accretion disk model. Using a Monte Carlo technique, we compute the linear polarization of a double peaked broad emission line. A Keplerian accretion disk is adopted for the double peak emission line region and the Schwarzschild geometry is assumed in the emission region. Far from the accretion disk where flat Minkowski geometry is appropriate, we place a scattering region in the shape of a spherical shell sliced. We generate a line photon in the accretion disk in an arbitraray direction in the local rest frame and follow the geodesic of the photon until it hits the scattering region. The profile of the polarized flux is mainly determined by the relative location of the scattering region with respect to the emission source. When the scattering region is in the polar direction, the linear degree of polarization also shows a double peak structure. Under a favorable condition we show that up to 1% of linear degree of polarization may be obtained.
