The accurate official map of air temperature does not exist for the Hawaiian Islands due to the limited number of weather stations on the rugged volcanic landscape. To alleviate the major problem of temperature mapping, satellite-measured land surface temperature (LST) data were used as an additional source of sample points. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) system provides hypertemperal LST data, and LST pixel values that were frequently observed (${\ge}$14 days during a 32-day composite period) had a strong, consistent correlation with air temperature. Systematic grid points with a spacing of 5km, 10km, and 20km were generated, and LST-derived air temperature estimates were extracted for each of the grid points and used as input to inverse distance weighted (IDW) and cokriging methods. Combining temperature data and digital elevation model (DEM), cokriging significantly improved interpolation accuracy compared to IDW. Although a cokriging method is useful when a primary variable is cross-correlated with elevation, interpolation accuracy was sensitively influenced by the seasonal variations of weather conditions. Since the spatial variations of local air temperature are more variable in the wet season than in the dry season, prediction errors were larger during the wet season than the dry season.

As the society increasingly embraces the high - tech digital information age, the field of image processing becomes progressively more branched out and becoming an imperative field. However, image data is deteriorated due to various causes during transmission and salt and pepper noise is typical. Typical methods for removing salt and pepper noise include CWMF, SWMF, and A-TMF. However, existing methods are somewhat insufficient in their ability to remove noise in salt and pepper noise environments. Therefore, in this paper, after it is determined whether noise removal is needed, the following measures were taken. If the center pixel was non-noise, the original pixel was preserved, If it was noise, we proposed a two - dimensional spline interpolation method and a median filter depending on the noise density of the local mask. For the purpose of objective judgment, we compared the results with that of existing methods and used PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) as a judgment criterion.

Although image signal processing is used in many fields, degradation takes place in the process of transmitting image data by several causes. CWMF, A-TMF, and AWMF are the typical methods to eliminate noises from image data damaged under salt and pepper noise environment. However, those filters are not effective for noise rejection under highly dense noise environment. In this respect, the present study proposed an algorithm to remove in salt and pepper noise. In case the center pixel is determined to be non-noise, it is replaced with original pixel. In case the center pixel is noise, it segments local mask into 4 directions and uses linear interpolation to estimate original pixel. And then it applies spatial weight to the estimated pixel. The proposed algorithm shows a high PSNR of 24.56[dB] for House images that had been damaged of salt and pepper noise(P = 50%), compared to the existing CWMF, A-TMF and AWMF there were improvements by 16.46[dB], 12.28[dB], and 12.32[dB], respectively.

In this study, the NEURAL NETWORK (hereinafter referred to as NN) was applied to control of the nonlinear factors for turning movement of the crawler vehicle and experiment was carried out using a small model of crawler vehicle in order to inspect an application of NN. Furthermore, CHAOS NEURAL NETWORK (hereinafter referred to as CNN) was also applied to this control so as to compare with conventional NN. CNN is especially effective for plane in many variables with local minimum which conventional NN is apt to fall into, and it is relatively useful to nonlinear factors. Experiment of turning on the slope of crawler vehicle was performed in order to estimate an adaptability of nonlinear problems by NN and CNN. The inclination angles of the road surface which the vehicles travel on, were respectively 4deg, 8deg, 12deg. These field conditions were selected by the object for changing nonlinear magnitude in turning phenomenon of vehicle. Learning of NN and CNN was carried out by referring to positioning data obtained from measurement at every 15deg in turning. After learning, the sampling data at every 15deg were interpolated based on the constructed learning system of NN and CNN. Learning and simulation programs of NN and CNN were made by C language ("Association of research for algorithm of calculating machine (1992)"). As a result, conventional NN and CNN were available for interpolation of sampling data. Moreover, when nonlinear intensity is not so large under the field condition of small slope, interpolation performance of CNN was a little not so better than NN. However, when nonlinear intensity is large under the field condition of large slope, interpolation performance of CNN was relatively better than NN.
The Brazos River is one of the longest rivers contained entirely in the state of Texas, flowing over 700 miles from northwest Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. Today, the Brazos River Authority and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality interest in drought protection plan, waterpower project, and allowing the appropriation of water system-wide and water right within the Brazos River Basin to meet water needs of customers like farmers and local civilians in the future. Especially, this purpose of this paper primarily intended to provide the data for the engineering guidelines and make easily geological mapping tool. In the Brazos River basin, many stream-flow gage station sites are not working, and they can not provide stream-flow data sets enough for development of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) for use in the evaluation of proposed and existing dams and other impounding structures. Integrated GIS-Spatial Interpolation (GIS-SI) tool are composed of two parts; (1) extended GIS technique (new making interface for hydrological regionalization parameters plus classical GIS mapping skills), (2) Spatial Interpolation technique using weighting factors from kriging method. They are obtained from the relationship among location and elevation of geological watershed and existing stream-flow datasets. GIS-SI technique is easily used to compute parameters which get drainage areas, mean daily/monthly/annual precipitation, and weighted values. Also, they are independent variables of multiple linear regressions for simulation at un gaged stream-flow sites. In this study, GIS-SI technique is applied to the Brazos river basin in Texas. By assuming the ungaged flow at the sites of Palo Pinto, Bryan and Needville, the simulated daily/monthly/annual time series are compared with observed time series. The simulated daily/monthly/annual time series are highly correlated with and well fitted to the observed times series.

Northern Gyeonggi Province(NGP), consisting of 3 counties, is the northernmost region in South Korea adjacent to the de-militarized zone with North Korea. To supplement insufficient spatial coverage of official climate data and climate atlases based on those data, high-resolution digital climate models(DCM) were prepared to support weather- related activities of residents in NGP Monthly climate data from 51 synoptic stations across both North and South Korea were collected for 1981-2000. A digital elevation model(DEM) for this region with 30m cell spacing was used with the climate data for spatially interpolating daily maximum and minimum temperatures, solar irradiance, and precipitation based on relevant topoclimatological models. For daily minimum temperature, a spatial interpolation scheme accommodating the potential influences of cold air accumulation and the temperature inversion was used. For daily maximum temperature estimation, a spatial interpolation model loaded with the overheating index was used. Daily solar irradiances over sloping surfaces were estimated from nearby synoptic station data weighted by potential relative radiation, which is the hourly sum of relative solar intensity. Precipitation was assumed to increase with the difference between virtual terrain elevation and the DEM multiplied by an observed rate. Validations were carried out by installing an observation network specifically for making comparisons with the spatially estimated temperature pattern. Freezing risk in January was estimated for major fruit tree species based on the DCMs under the recurrence intervals of 10, 30, and 100 years, respectively. Frost risks at bud-burst and blossom of tree flowers were also estimated for the same resolution as the DCMs.
Input uncertainty is one of the major sources of uncertainty in hydrologic modeling. In this paper, first, three alternate rainfall inputs generated by different interpolation schemes were used to see the impact on a distributed watershed model. Later, the residuals of precipitation interpolations were tested as a source of ensemble streamflow generation in two river basins in the U.S. Using the Monte Carlo parameter search, the relationship between input and parameter uncertainty was also categorized to see sensitivity of the parameters to input differences. This analysis is useful not only to find the parameters that need more attention but also to transfer parameters calibrated for station measurement to the simulation using different inputs such as downscaled data from weather generator outputs. Input ensembles that preserves local statistical characteristics are used to generate streamflow ensembles hindcast, and showed that the ensemble sets are capturing the observed steamflow properly. This procedure is especially important to consider input uncertainties in the simulation of streamflow forecast.
For single image super resolution (SR), interpolation based and example based algorithms are extensively used. The interpolation algorithms have the strength of theoretical simplicity. However, those algorithms are tending to produce high resolution images with jagged edges, because they are not able to use more priori information. Example based algorithms have been studied in the past few years. For example based SR, the nearest neighbor based algorithms are extensively considered. Among them, neighbor embedding (NE) has been inspired by manifold learning method, particularly locally linear embedding. However, the sizes of local training sets are always too small. So, NE algorithm is weak in the performance of the visuality and quantitative measure by the poor generalization of nearest neighbor estimation. An improved NE algorithm with Support Vector Regression (SVR) was proposed to solve this problem. Given a low resolution image, the pixel values in its high resolution version are estimated by the improved NE. Comparing with bicubic and NE, the improvements of 1.25 dB and 2.33 dB are achieved in PSNR. Experimental results show that proposed method is quantitatively and visually more effective than prior works using bicubic interpolation and NE.

In this paper, a directional reconstruction of lost block in image over noisy channel is presented. DCT coefficients or pixel values in the lost blocks are recovered by using the linear interpolation with available neighboring blocks that are adaptively selected by the directional measure that are composed of the DDC (Difference of DC opposite blocks)and SAC(Similarity of AC opposite blocks) between opposite blocks around lost blocks. The proposed directional recovery method is effective for the strong edge and texture regions because we do not make use of the fixed 4-neighboring blocks but exploit the varying neighboring blocks adaptively by the directional information in the local image. In this paper, we describe the novel directional measure(CDS: Combination of DDC and SAC) composed of the DDC and the SAC and select the usable block to recover the lost block with the directional measure. The proposed method shows about 0.6dB PSNR improvement in average compared to the conventional methods.
Galloping is one of the most serious vibration problems in transmission lines. Power lines can be extensively damaged owing to aerodynamic instabilities caused by ice accretion. In this study, the accident probability induced by galloping phenomenon was analyzed using logistic regression analysis. As former studies have generally concluded, main factors considered were local weather factors and physical factors of power delivery systems. Since the number of transmission towers outnumbers the number of weather observatories, interpolation of weather factors, Kriging to be more specific, has been conducted in prior to forming galloping accident estimation model. Physical factors have been provided by Korea Electric Power Corporation, however because of the large number of explanatory variables, variable selection has been conducted, leaving total 11 variables. Before forming estimation model, with 84 provided galloping cases, 840 non-galloped cases were chosen out of 13 billion cases. Prediction model for accidents by galloping has been formed with logistic regression model and validated with 4-fold validation method, corresponding AUC value of ROC curve has been used to assess the discrimination level of estimation models. As the result, logistic regression analysis effectively discriminated the power lines that experienced galloping accidents from those that did not.
