  • The corrosion of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete bridge decks significantly affects the degradation of the capacity. Due to the advantageous characteristics such as high tensile strength and non-corrosive property, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) has been gathering much interest from designers and engineers for possible usage as a alternative reinforcement for a steel reinforcing bar. However, its application has not been widespread, because there data for short- and long-term performance data of FRP reinforced concrete members are insufficient. In this paper, seven full-scale decks with dimensions of $4000{\times}3000{\times}240mm$ were prepared and tested to failure in the laboratory. The test parameter was the bottom reinforcement ratio in transverse direction. The decks were subjected to various levels of concentrated cyclic load with a contact area of $577{\times}231mm$ to simulate the vehicle loading of DB-24 truck wheel loads acting on the center span of the deck. It was observed that the glass FRP (GFRP) reinforced deck on a restraint girder is strongly effected to the level of the applied load rather than the bottom reinforcement ratio. The study results showed that the maximum load less than 58% of the maximum static load can be applied to the deck to resist a fatigue load of 2 million cycles. The fatigue life of the GFRP decks from this study showed the lower and higher fatigue performance than that of ordinary steel and CFRP rebar reinforced concrete deck. respectively.

  • In terms of bridge construction, the concrete deck slab is weak members compared to beam members of the bridge supports. Deck slabs must be sound to support and distribute vehicle loads. If slabs are not enough to support the loads, it should be replaced. Bridge deck replacement has been an important industry over the world since the construction is simplified to shorten construction time and to save construction costs. Slab module provides a quickly, easily and reliably construction method in order to avoid high cost and minimum traffic disruption. in addition, slab module shows high reliability since they are factory products. However, slab module should be considered in the performance under various loads. In this study, structural analysis is performed to evaluate the performance of slab module under vehicle loads and temperature loads. Spiral rebar is also utilized around the vertical joints to improve the structural integrity under the lifting loads. In order to confirm the weak area of slab module for the lift condition, numerical analysis has been performed.

  • Ship collisions and grounding continue to occur regardless of continuous efforts to prevent such accidents. With the increasing demand for safety at sea and for protection of the environment, it is of crucial importance to be able to reduce the probability of accidents, assess their consequences and ultimately minimize or prevent potential damages to the ships and the marine environment. Numerical simulations for actual collision problem are conducted with a special attention with respect to finite element size, fracture criteria and material properties, which require a careful consideration to improve the accuracy. A parametric analysis varying colliding speed, angle, design loading condition is conducted using nonlinear finite element analysis method for 46,00 dwt Product/chemical carrier. The relationship between the absorbed energy and indentation are derived quantitatively using the insights observed from this study, and a novel design concept for assessing the anti-collision performance are proposed.

  • The policy of total maximum daily load (TMDL) was introduced to manage wasteload within the loading capacity to achieve water quality standards in the watershed. While the TMDL was implemented, the institutional and technical correction for the improvement of procedure was accomplished even though there were various problems and basically through the process of trial & error. However, a fundamental improvement of this policy is needed to implement the TMDL. This study has come up with a new viewpoint on improving this procedure for reasonable implementation of TMDL. First of all, the water quality and flowrate monitoring of the tributaries should be implemented. This should be done through the establishment of a monitoring system which will include standards of scope, a set time period, water quality parameters and frequency follow ups for the implementation of TMDL. The basic plan in all of the watersheds should be developed based on the establishment of water quality parameters and standards for water use and ecological purposes according to the results of the water quality and flowrate monitoring in the watersheds. The implementation plan for water quality improvement should be established in the watersheds where exceeds the targeted water quality standards. The performance assessment of TMDL should be conducted every year to meet the satisfaction assessment of water quality standards in the watersheds. Finally, if the water quality standards in the watersheds can not be attained or the water quality parameters and standards should be changed, the implementation procedure will be performed according to the iterative process. On the contrary, the policy of TMDL in the watersheds where the water quality standards have been met the goal will be finished.

  • Multimedia consumer electronics(CE) devices, such as MP3 players, PMPs, and digital cameras, are electronic equipments used to record, play or create multimedia data. Most multimedia CE devices provide uses with the ability to search multimedia stored in the device and browse the search results. One of the unique requirements in multimedia CE devices is that the search results displayed in the screen must be restored quickly when the device powers off and later back on. For this purpose, the existing methods (1) re-execute the original search query, and (2) move the cursor to the original position in the search results. However, this approach may be inefficient when the number of records in the result set is large. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for multimedia CE devices that can quickly restore the search results displayed in the screen when the device powers off and later back on. The proposed method can retrieve the original search results in the screen quickly by saving and loading some information about the query evaluation plan. Though the performance evaluation, we show that the proposed method provides excellent performance regardless of the number of records in tile result set or the original cursor position.

  • Granular Activated Carbon(GAC) is widely used in drinking water treatment. At S and B Water Treatment Plant, GAC is used in place of granular media in conventional rapid filters(GAC Filter-Adsorber) for removal of Disinfection By-products(DBPs). The primary focus of this study is on the performance of existing filter-adsorber, and their operation. It was found that F/A process removed turbidity as effective as sand system. The ratio of Hydrophobic DOM (HPO) and hydrophilic DOM (HPI) fraction in the raw water at S and B WTP was similar. Filter Adsorber presented earlier DOC breakthrough and steady state condition which was contributed by biodegradation during operation period. The removal efficiency of DBPs were used to evaluate the filter performance. The DBPs concentration of F/A treated water was below treatment goal level (THM < $80\;{\mu}g/L$, HAA < $60{\mu}g/L$). The removal efficiency of THM decreased rapidly during operation period. However, HAA were removed steadily regardless of the influent concentration of HAA. These results indicate that the removal of THM depend upon the adsorption mechanism while the removal of HAA depend upon biodegradation as well as adsorption. The decrease of adsorption capacity and characteristic value of GAC may be attributed to the effect of high organic loading, residual free chlorine, coagulants, manganese oxidants and frequently backwashing. This study has confirmed that Filter adsorber process can be considered as effective alternatives for the removal of DBPs, especially HAA.

  • Recently, advances in speed of the CPU have for out-paced advances in memory speed. Main-memory access is increasingly a performance bottleneck for main-memory database systems. To reduce memory access speed, cache memory have incorporated in the memory subsystem. However cache memories can reduce the memory speed only when the requested data is found in the cache. We propose a new cache sensitive T-tree index structure called as $CST^*$-tree for range query search. The $CST^*$-tree reduces the number of cache miss occurrences by loading the reduced internal nodes that do not have index entries. And it supports the sequential access of index entries for range query by connecting adjacent terminal nodes and internal index nodes. For performance evaluation, we have developed a cost model, and compared our $CST^*$-tree with existing CST-tree, that is the conventional cache sensitive T-tree, and $T^*$-tree, that is conventional the range query search T -tree, by using the cost model. The results indicate that cache miss occurrence of $CST^*$-tree is decreased by 20~30% over that of CST-tree in a single value search, and it is decreased by 10~20% over that of $T^*$-tree in a range query search.

  • The objective of this paper is to support accurate pavement condition assessment and decision of proper maintenance method and time by conducting visual inspection and calculating the remaining life of pavement from falling weight deflectometer(FWD) data. Each was implemented in the same long-term performance pavement(LTPP) sections. Visual inspection was executed to measure pavement condition indices such as crack, rutting and international roughness index(IRI) and the Seoul Pavement Index(SPI) was calculated based on these results. The dynamic modulus was back-calculated from the FWD data. The remaining pavement lives were determined from equivalent single axle loading(ESAL) and FWD data. Correlation of maintenance priority by each result value was examined. Consequently, the correlation between remaining life to Crack and Rutting was higher than the other factors or indicesbecause IRI is not related to FWD value and SPI value consists with IRI value and other indices. The R-square value of correlation of FWD with Crack and Rutting was 0.65, which indicated an insufficient correlation. Consequently, when decision of maintenance of method, time, etc. is determined, FWD data have to be considered with Crack and Rutting because of those relations.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate effects of initial concentration and nutrients in treatment of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soils. The reactor used in this study was slurry-phase bioreactor of in-vessel type. Performance results on treatment of diesel fuel contaminated soils and micorbial growth were generated at the bench-scale level. The fate of TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) and the microbial growth were evaluated in combination with biodegradation rate. Effect of initial loading levels of 50,000 and 100,000mg TPH/kg soil was studied. Performance results with two reactors were showed at the total TPH removal rate of 90.5% and 90.8%, respectively. However, the reactor with the initial concentration of 50,000mg TPH/kg soil showed higher biological TPH removal efficiency except for removal by volatilization than the other Although the different amount of nutrients was applied in two reactors, there was no remarkable difference in microbial growth rate. However, considerable factor in this results was that applied different initial concentration to two reactors. Although initial concentration was two times higher than it applied to the reactor without addition of nutrients, in total and biological TPH removal rate the reactor with addition of nutrients showed a higher than the other.

  • PURPOSE. All-ceramic restorations required extensive tooth preparation. The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate a minimally invasive preparation and thickness of monolithic zirconia crowns, which would provide sufficient mechanical endurance and strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Crowns with thickness of 0.2 mm (group 0.2, n=32) or of 0.5 mm (group 0.5, n=32) were milled from zirconia and fixed with resin-based adhesives (groups 0.2A, 0.5A) or zinc phosphate cements (groups 0.2C, 0.5C). Half of the samples in each subgroup (n=8) underwent thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TCML)(TC: $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$, $2{\times}3,000cycles$, 2 min/cycle; ML: 50 N, $1.2{\times}10^6cycles$), while the other samples were stored in water ($37^{\circ}C/24h$). Survival rates were compared (Kaplan-Maier). The specimens surviving TCML were loaded to fracture and the maximal fracture force was determined (ANOVA; Bonferroni; ${\alpha}=.05$). The fracture mode was analyzed. RESULTS. In both 0.5 groups, all crowns survived TCML, and the comparison of fracture strength among crowns with and without TCML showed no significant difference (P=.628). Four crowns in group 0.2A and all of the crowns in group 0.2C failed during TCML. The fracture strength after 24 hours of the cemented 0.2 mm-thick crowns was significantly lower than that of adhesive bonded crowns. All cemented crowns provided fracture in the crown, while about 80% of the adhesively bonded crowns fractured through crown and die. CONCLUSION. 0.5 mm thick monolithic crowns possessed sufficient strength to endure physiologic performance, regardless of the type of cementation. Fracture strength of the 0.2 mm cemented crowns was too low for clinical application.
