  • At the present time, civil structure based of aseismatic design in the Korea began about 1997. However, most of the railway bridge constructed with block and block in the past can easily deteriorate with time due to the increase of repeated traffic loading, increase of train speed, etc. In this study, soil properties of the substructure of railway bridge with block and block was investigated through the SASW(spectral Analysis or Surface Waves) and RCTC test in the field and laboratories. Also, stabilization of liquefaction after occurred earthquake was investigated through the Seed & Idress method use of N value and Andrus and Stoke method use of S-Wave velocity.

  • An LPG engine (KL6i) for heavy duty vehicle has been developed using liquid phase LPG injection (LPLi) system, which has regarded as one of next generation LPG fuel supply systems. For the KL6i engine, lean burn technology was introduced to minimize the thermal loading and NOx emissions due to an increase of the engine power. In this work, injection timing and piston bowl shape were investigated for the stabilization of lean burn characteristics. Experimental results reveals that fuel stratification induced by these parameters is most effective strategy to extend lean combustion limit in the LPLi system.

  • The study presents the linear dynamic analysis of bridges under vehicular movement to examine the performance characteristics due to the various structural and loading conditions. The road surface roughness and bridge-vehicle interactions are considered. The road surface profiles for the approaching roadway and bridge decks are generated from power spectral density functions for different road roughness conditions. A new filtering method using the wheel trace is proposed to obtain the more rational bridge-vehicle interactions from the randomly generated road surface. The dynamic responses of various bridges designed according to current design practice are examined, in which important structural parameters(such as span length, girder spacing, etc.) are considering systematically. In addition, the traffic conditions of multi-truck traveling either consecutively on the same lane or side-by-side on the adjacent lanes are also evaluated.

  • An experimental and numerical study on shock attenuation in a solid by a subminiature flyer impact was conducted to determine the performance of a subminiature exploding foil initiator such as, flyer velocity and impulse loading. The obtained attenuation pattern shows the possibility to determine the critical flyer velocity for initiating the miniaturized pyrotechnic unit by figuring out shock intensity and duration according to flight characteristics.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze transport ability of AGV(Automated Guided Vehicle) and SHC(SHuttle Carrier). The main difference between two types of transport vehicles is that AGV depends on container crane or transfer crane to do loading/unloading container, but SHC is very independent to it. Therefore, the transport ability of SHC is expected to be higher than AGV, So, in this paper, we established simulation model to evaluate two types of transport vehicles and analyzed the results. Simulation model was established to automated container terminal with perpendicular yard layout, and applied closed loop operation of transport vehicle between apron and stacking yard. In the result, SHC showed very superior than AGV aspect of container crane productivity and vehicle fleets,

  • Pressure transducers are increasingly used within soil mass or at soil-structure interface for appraisal of stresses acting at point of installation. Calibration of pressure transducers provides a unique relationship between applied pressure and voltage or strain sensed by transducer during various loading conditions and is crucial for proper interpretation of results obtained from pressure transducers. In the present study an in-house calibration device is used to calibrate pressure transducers and the study is divided into two parts: 1) demonstration of developed calibration device for fluid and in-soil calibration of pressure transducers; 2) effect of soil layer thickness on the earth pressure cell (EPC) output. Results obtained from the present study revealed successful performance of the developed calibration device, and significant effect of sand layer thickness on the calibration results. The optimum sand layer thickness is obtained as 1.5 times the diameter of EPC.

  • An experimental study of five full-scale coupling beam specimens has been conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of strengthened RC coupling beams by bolted side steel plates using a reversed cyclic loading procedure. The strengthened coupling beams are fabricated with different plate thicknesses and shear connector arrangements to study their respective effects on load-carrying capacity, strength retention, stiffness degradation, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation ability. The study revealed that putting shear connectors along the span of coupling beams produces no significant improvement to the structural performance of the strengthened beams. Translational and rotational partial interactions of the shear connectors that would weaken the load-carrying capacity of the steel plates were observed and measured. The hierarchy of failure of concrete, steel plates, and shear connectors was identified. Furthermore, detailed effects of plate buckling and various arrangements of shear connectors on the post-peak behavior of the strengthened beams are discussed.

  • In this paper, the design criteria of future container crane for megaships are investigated. The current loading/unloading capacity of a typical container crane, roughly 30 moves/hr, is too law to meet the requirements of future super containerships, which are expected over 15,000 TEU. After examining the transition of containerships through the years and studying the research trend in developed countries, the specifications of the container crane that can Meet a 15,000 TEU containership are proposed. The structure, trolley and hoist mechanism, outreach, backreach, capacity, speeds, durability, and stability of the future container crane are described.
