This research examines the eccentric compression performance of composite columns composed of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC)-filled square steel tube and profile steel. A total of 17 specimens on the composite columns with different recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement percentage, RAC strength, width to thickness ratio of square steel tube, profile steel ratio, eccentricity and slenderness ratio were subjected to eccentric compression tests. The failure process and characteristic of specimens under eccentric compression loading were observed in detail. The load-lateral deflection curves, load-train curves and strain distribution on the cross section of the composite columns were also obtained and described on the basis of test data. Results corroborate that the failure characteristics and modes of the specimens with different design parameters were basically similar under eccentric compression loads. The compression side of square steel tube yields first, followed by the compression side of profile steel. Finally, the RAC in the columns was crushed and the apparent local bulging of square steel tube was also observed, which meant that the composite column was damaged and failed. The composite columns under eccentric compression loading suffered from typical bending failure. Moreover, the eccentric bearing capacity and deformation of the specimens decreased as the RCA replacement percentage and width to thickness ratio of square steel tube increased, respectively. Slenderness ratio and eccentricity had a significantly adverse effect on the eccentric compression performance of composite columns. But overall, the composite columns generally had high-bearing capacity and good deformation. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the composite columns under eccentric compression loads was also analysed in detail, and the calculation formulas on the eccentric compression capacity of composite columns were proposed via the limit equilibrium analysis method. The calculation results of the eccentric compression capacity of columns are consistent with the test results, which verify the validity of the formulas, and the conclusions can serve as references for the engineering application of this kind of composite columns.
Buckling failure is a typical slope instability mode that should be paid more attention to. It is difficult to provide systematic guidance for the monitoring and management of such slopes due to unclear mechanism. Here we examine buckling failure as the potential instability mode for a slope above a railway tunnel in southwest China. A comprehensive model test system was developed that can be used to conduct buckling failure experiments. The displacement, stress, and strain of the slope were monitored to document the evolution of buckling failure during the experiment. Monitoring data reveal the deformation and stress characteristics of the slope with different slipping mass thicknesses and under different top loads. The test results show that the slipping mass is the main subject of the top load and is the key object of monitoring. Displacement and stress precede buckling failure, so maybe useful predictors of impending failure. However, the response of the stress variation is earlier than displacement variation during the failure process. It is also necessary to monitor the bedrock near the slip face because its stress evolution plays an important role in the early prediction of instability. The position near the slope foot is most prone to buckling failure, so it should be closely monitored.
The use of the bearing capacity equation is subjected to several uncertainties. In this study, estimation of the bearing capacity of footings based on the cone resistance q$_{c}$ is investigated. Non-linear finite element analyses based on a state-dependent stress-strain model were performed to obtain the load-settlement responses of axially loaded circular footings. Various soil and footing conditions, including different relative densities, depths of embedment, and footing diameters were considered in the analyses. Based on the finite element results, load-settlement curves were obtained and used to determine the unit limit bearing capacity in terms of the cone resistance q$_{c}$ for footings subjected to surcharge. Values of the unit bearing capacity for different embedment depths were in a narrow range, while considerable variation was observed with relative density D$_{R}$. It was observed that the unit limit bearing capacity normalized with respect to q$_{c}$ decreases as D$_{R}$ increases for a given surcharge.

In this paper, the total procedure for composite laminate mechanical joint (ASTM D5961 Proc. A, B) from fixture design to test analysis was showed. Composite laminate mechanical joints were analyzed using the FEM(Finite Element Method) and compared to test results. A progressive failure analysis was applied to FEM to analyze the failure behavior of test specimens. Three failure theories - maximum stress, maximum strain, and Tsai-Wu were applied to FEM to predict test failure load. General parameters for composite laminate joints were reviewed and the differences of bearing strength were compared with major parameters.

The aim of the study is to interpret the distribution of occlusal force by 3-dimensional finite element analysis of ISP(Implant Supported Prosthesis) supported by minimum number of implant to restore the edentulous patients. For this study, the Astra Tech implant system is used. Geometric modeling for 6 and 4 fixture ISP group is performed with respect to the bone, implant and one piece superstructure, respectively. Implants are arbitrarily placed according to the anatomical limit of lower jaw and for the favorable distribution of occlusal force, which is applied at the end of cantilever extension of ISP with 30mm. Element type is tetrahedral for finite element model and the typical mechanical properties, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of each material, cortical, cancellous bone and implant material are utilized for the finite element analysis. From this study, we can see the distribution of equivalent stress equal to real situation and speculate the difference in the stress distribution in the whole model and at each implant fixture, From the analysis, the area of maximum stress is distributed on distal contact area between bone and fixture in the crestal bone. The maximum stress is 53MPa at the 0.2mm area from the bone-implant interface in the maximum side for 300N load condition for 4 fixture case, which is slightly less than the stress calculated from allowable strain. This stress has not been deduced to directly cause the loss of crestal bone around implant fixture, but the stress can be much reduced as the old peoples may have lower chewing force. Thus, clinical trial may be performed with this treatment protocol to use 4 fixtured ISP for old patients.

Objectives: This study aimed to optimize the thread depth and pitch of a recently designed dental implant to provide uniform stress distribution by means of a response surface optimization method available in finite element (FE) software. The sensitivity of simulation to different mechanical parameters was also evaluated. Materials and Methods: A three-dimensional model of a tapered dental implant with micro-threads in the upper area and V-shaped threads in the rest of the body was modeled and analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA). An axial load of 100 N was applied to the top of the implants. The model was optimized for thread depth and pitch to determine the optimal stress distribution. In this analysis, micro-threads had 0.25 to 0.3 mm depth and 0.27 to 0.33 mm pitch, and V-shaped threads had 0.405 to 0.495 mm depth and 0.66 to 0.8 mm pitch. Results: The optimized depth and pitch were 0.307 and 0.286 mm for micro-threads and 0.405 and 0.808 mm for V-shaped threads, respectively. In this design, the most effective parameters on stress distribution were the depth and pitch of the micro-threads based on sensitivity analysis results. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the optimal implant design has micro-threads with 0.307 and 0.286 mm depth and pitch, respectively, in the upper area and V-shaped threads with 0.405 and 0.808 mm depth and pitch in the rest of the body. These results indicate that micro-thread parameters have a greater effect on stress and strain values.
Traditionally used analytical approach to predict the fatigue failure of reinforced concrete (RC) structure is generally conservative and has certain limitations. The nonlinear finite element method (FEM) offers less expensive solution for fatigue analysis with sufficient accuracy. However, the conventional implicit dynamic analysis is very expensive for high level computation. Whereas, an explicit dynamic analysis approach offers a computationally operative modelling to predict true responses of a structural element under periodic loading and might be perfectly matched to accomplish long life fatigue computations. Hence, this study simulates the fatigue behaviour of RC beams with finite element (FE) assemblage presenting a simplified explicit dynamic numerical solution to show computer aided fatigue behaviour of RC beam. A commercial FEM package, ABAQUS has been chosen for this complex modelling. The concrete has been modelled as a 8-node solid element providing competent compression hardening and tension stiffening. The steel reinforcements are simulated as two-node truss elements comprising elasto-plastic stress-strain behaviour. All the possible nonlinearities are duly incorporated. Time domain analysis has been adopted through an automatic Newmark-β time incremental technique. The program consists of twelve RC beams to visualize the real behaviour during fatigue process and to obtain the reliability of the study. Both the numerical and experimental results indicate a redistribution of stresses along the time and damage accumulation of beam which severely affect the serviceability and ultimate capacity of RC beam. The output of the FEM analysis demonstrates good match with the experimental consequences which affirm the efficacy of the computer aided model. The controlled fatigue damage evolution at service fatigue load limits makes the FE model an efficient tool in predicting high cycle fatigue behaviour of RC structures.

In the case of impact loading test, measurement of the test data has difficulties due to fast loading velocity. In addition, the dynamic behaviors of specimens are distorted by ignoring local fracture. In this study, therefore, finite element analysis which considers local fracture and strain rate effect on impact load was performed by using LS-DYNA, an explicit analysis program. The one-way and two-way specimens strengthened with FRP Sheets and steel fibers were considered as analysis models. The results showed that the impact resistance of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) and ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) was enhanced. In the case of specimens strengthened with FRP Sheets, GFRP was superior to CFRP in the performance of impact resistance, and there was little effect of the FRP Sheet orientation. The reliability of this analysis model was verified by comparing with previous experimental results.
In this paper, the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) (Mindlin) for continuum incorporating surface energy is exploited to study the static behavior of ultra-thin functionally graded (FG) plates. The size-dependent mechanical response is very important while the plate thickness reduces to micro/nano scales. Bulk stresses on the surfaces are required to satisfy the surface balance conditions involving surface stresses. Unlike the classical continuum plate models, the bulk transverse normal stress is preserved here. By incorporating the surface energies into the principle of minimum potential energy, a series of continuum governing differential equations which include intrinsic length scales are derived. The modifications over the classical continuum stiffness are also obtained. To illustrate the application of the theory, simply supported micro/nano scaled rectangular films subjected to a transverse mechanical load are investigated. Numerical examples are presented to present the effects of surface energies on the behavior of functionally graded (FG) film, whose effective elastic moduli of its bulk material are represented by the simple power law. The proposed model is then used for a comparison between the continuum analysis of FG ultra-thin plates with and without incorporating surface effects. Also, the transverse shear strain effect is studied by a comparison between the FG plate behavior based on Kirchhoff and Mindlin assumptions. In our analysis the residual surface tension under unstrained conditions and the surface Lame constants are expected to be the same for the upper and lower surfaces of the FG plate. The proposed model is verified by previous work.

This work intends to establish the reliability and fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ criterion of welded joints by EGW for high strength EH36-TMCP ultra thick plate. For this, firstly thermo elasto-plastic analysis has been carried out on two pass X-groove butt joint model to clarify the thermal and mechanical behaviour(residual stress, plastic strain, magnitude of stress and their distribution and production mechanism). Moreover, to establish fracture criterion, analysis of fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ has been performed under the notch machined and residual stress with the load condition on EGW welded joints. A quantitative fracture criterion for EGW welded joints is suggested by using $K_{IC}$.
