The flow signal or spool position signal is used to determine the dynamic characteristics of directional control valves. Alternatively, the signal of spool position or flow can be replaced with the velocity of a low friction, low inertia actuator. In this study, the frequency response of the servo valve equipped with a spool position transducer is measured with a metering cylinder. The input signal, spool displacement, load pressure, and velocity of the metering cylinder are measured, and the theoretical results from the transfer function analysis are verified. The superposition rule for magnitude ratio and phase angle was found to be always applicable among any signal type, and it was found that the load pressure signal is not appropriate for use as the signal for measuring the frequency response of a servo valve. It was confirmed that the frequency response of a servo valve using metering cylinder was similar to the results from a spool displacement signal. The metering cylinder used for measuring the frequency response of a servo valve should be designed to have sufficiently greater bandwidth frequency than the bandwidth frequency of the servo valve.
The dynamic displacement is considered to be an important indicator of structural safety, and becomes an indispensable part of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system for high-speed railway bridges. This paper proposes an indirect strain based dynamic displacement reconstruction methodology for high-speed railway box girders. For the typical box girders under eccentric train load, the plane section assumption and elementary beam theory is no longer applicable due to the bend-torsion coupling effects. The monitored strain was decoupled into bend and torsion induced strain, pre-trained multi-output support vector regression (M-SVR) model was employed for such decoupling process considering the sensor layout cost and reconstruction accuracy. The decoupled strained based displacement could be reconstructed respectively using box girder plate element analysis and mode superposition principle. For the transformation modal matrix has a significant impact on the reconstructed displacement accuracy, the modal order would be optimized using particle swarm algorithm (PSO), aiming to minimize the ill conditioned degree of transformation modal matrix and the displacement reconstruction error. Numerical simulation and dynamic load testing results show that the reconstructed displacement was in good agreement with the simulated or measured results, which verifies the validity and accuracy of the algorithm proposed in this paper.
In this research, we tested 10 simply supported concrete-encased composite columns under monotonic eccentric loads and investigated their shear behaviour. The specimens tested were two reinforced concrete specimens, three steel-reinforced concrete (SRC) specimens with an H-shaped steel section (also called a beam section), and five SRC specimens with a cruciform-shaped steel section (also called a column section). The experimental variables included the transverse steel shape's depth and the longitudinal steel flange's width. Experimental observations indicated the following. (1) The ultimate load-carrying capacity was controlled by web compression failure, defined as a situation where the concrete within the diagonal strut's upper end was crushed. (2) The composite effect was strong before the crushing of the concrete outside the steel shape. (3) We adjusted the softened strut-and-tie SRC (SST-SRC) model to yield more accurate strength predictions than those obtained using the strength superposition method. (4) The MSST-SRC model can more reasonably predict shear strength at an initial concrete softening load point. The rationality of the MSST-SRC model was inferred by experimentally observing shear behaviour, including concrete crushing and the point of sharp variation in the shear strain.
Since vehicles become large and heavy and traffic volume is increased rapidly, many fatigue damages have been reported in bridge members. In order to prevent fatigue damages of bridge members and maintain safety it is essential to perform rational fatigue check. Only one vehicle is loaded on a bridge deck for the fatigue design. But in reality it is seldom that only one vehicle passes on a bridge deck. Usually more than two vehicles are passing on a bridge deck simultaneously. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the influence of simultaneous loading for a rational fatigue design. In this study, the influence of simultaneous loading is investigated by performing stress variation analysis due to vehicle load on the basis of linear superposition method and Monte-Carlo simulation of traffic flow, and then calculating the measure of fatigue damages.

Dynamic behaviors of the two-span continuous bridge which is one of prototypes on Gyoung-Bu high-speed railway are analyzed and some methods for reducing the resonance of the bridge are proposed. The bridge is modeled as a two-span continuous beam and the load is a vehicle of TGV-K (2p+18T) with length of 380.15 meter traveling on the railway bridge at some constant velocity. The equations governing the dynamic behaviors of the bridge are partial differential equations produced by using a system with distributed mass and elasticity. The analysis of the governing equations is performed by the mode superposition method which has modal coordinates solved by Duhamel's integral. Without considering the train velocity the dynamic reponses can be greatly reduced at some special lengths of bridge. It is different from the results of simple bridges researched so far. When the dynamic responses increase rapidly to make a resonance phenomenon depending on the train velocities, the several methods are proposed to deduce the resonance.
Based on centrifuge model tests, the failure mechanism of reinforced earth retaining wall under strip load was investigated in this paper. Tests were performed by changing the materials of reinforcing strips, strip lengths, and strip arrangements. The strips were strain-gauged to measure the tensions in strips. The results were analyzed and compared with various design methosds in use to verify their feasibility. Consequently, a centrifuge model test was an effective method of investigating the behavior of reinforced earth retaining wall. The 2 : 1 stress diffusion method showed comparable results with tests in estimating the capacity of the reinforced earth wall under strip load. The superposition of tensions due to selfweight of the backfill and strip load was valid to estimate total tensions mobilized in strips. Using the elasticity theory to estimate the maximum tension mobilized in strips due to surcharge, while solutions of Boussinesq and Westergaard underestimated less tensions than the measured valises, Frohlich solution showed the comparable results with tests.
The composite materials may be exposed to environmental (thermal or hygral or both) condition during their service life. The effect of environmental condition is usually adverse from the point of view of design of composite structures. In the present research study the effect of hygrothermal condition on the design of laminated composite structures is investigated. The active fiber composite (AFC) which may be utilized as actuator or sensor is considered in the present analysis. The sensor layer is used to sense the level of response of the composite structures. The sensed voltage is fed back to the actuator through the controller. In this study both displacement and velocity feedback controllers are employed to reduce the response of the composite laminate within acceptable limit. The Newmark direct time integration scheme is employed along with modal superposition method to improve the computational efficiency. It is observed from the numerical study that the laminated composite structures become weak in the presence of hygrothermal load. The response of the structure can be brought to the acceptable level once the AFC layer is activated through the feedback loop.
Most codes of practice state that for large in-plane structures it is necessary to account for the spatial variability of earthquake ground motion. There are essentially three effects that contribute for this variation: (i) wave passage effect, due to finite propagation velocity; (ii) incoherence effect, due to differences in superposition of waves; and (iii) the local site amplification due to spatial variation in geological conditions. This paper discusses the procedures to be undertaken in the time domain analysis of a cable-stayed bridge under spatial variability of earthquake ground motion. The artificial synthesis of correlated displacements series that simulate the earthquake load is discussed first. Next, it is described the 3D model of the International Guadiana Bridge used for running tests with seismic analysis. A comparison of the effects produced by seismic waves with different apparent propagation velocities and different geological conditions is undertaken. The results in this study show that the differences between the analysis with and without spatial variability of earthquake ground motion can be important for some displacements and internal forces, especially those influenced by symmetric modes.

Underestimation of rock joint shear strength comes from an inadequate consideration of roughness mobilization behavior, which is changed by asperity size as well applied normal load. In this study, we performed rock joint shear tests, and studied the roughness mobilization characteristics related with the scale of normal stress and asperities. Test specimens with artificial triangular asperities were manufactured. The specimens consisted of 3 types, and each type represented unevenness, waviness and total roughness(superposition of unevenness and waviness). The experimental results show that the roughness mobilization characteristics are varied by the scale of normal stress and asperities. Furthermore, the investigation shows that the rate of geometrical component and mechanical component in the total roughness is also varied by the scale of normal stress and asperities. These results suggest that we should consider the roughness mobilization characteristics for the roughness quantification and the shear strength modelling.
An analytical model of the stress field caused by sliding indentation of brittle materials is developed. The complete stress field is treated as the superposition of applied normal and tangential forces with a sliding blister approximation of the localized inelastic deformation occuring just underneath the indenter. It is shown that lateral cracking is produced by the sliding blister stress field and that median cracking is caused by the applied contact forces. The model is combined with an experimental volume change measurements to show that the relative magnitude of tensile stresses governing lateral crack and median crack growth varies with the magnitude of the applied load. This prediction is consistent with the different regimes of experimentally observed cracking in soda-lime glass.
