Stress Analysis of Composite Laminated Plates with 2 Collinear Circular Cutouts (2개의 원형개구부가 있는 복합재료 적층판의 응력해석)

  • This paper presents the theoretical analysis method to determine the stress concentrations around the circular cutouts with various geometrical parameters. The purposes of this study are to investigate on the stress distribution around the circular cutouts due to interaction between two circular cutouts and to develop the design method in composite plates. The composite laminated plate with 2 equal collinear circular cutouts under inplane loads is treated as an quasi-isotropic, symmetric, finite, square, multiply connected and thin plate. The effects of cutout sizes, distances between two circular cutouts and inplane load conditions on stress distribution are studied in detail.

Direct design of truss bridges using advanced analysis

  • This paper presents a new design method of truss bridges using advanced analysis. In this approach, separate member capacity checks encompassed by the specification equations are not required because the stability of separate members and the structure as a whole can be treated rigorously for the determination of the maximum strength of the structures. The method is developed and refined by modifications to the conventional elastic-plastic hinge method. Verification studies are carried out by comparing with the plastic-zone solutions. The load-deflection behavior of the truss shows a good agreement between the plastic-zone analysis. A case study is provided for a truss bridge. Member sizes determined by the proposed method are compared with those determined by the conventional method. It is concluded that the proposed method is suitable for adoption in practice.

Moment curvature method for fire safety design of steel beams

  • This paper presents a moment-curvature method that accounts for the strength deterioration of steel at elevated temperature in estimating the response of steel beams exposed to fire. A modification to the EC4 method is proposed for a better estimation of the temperature distribution in the steel beam supporting a concrete slab. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results with established test results and the nonlinear finite element analysis results. The beam failure criterion based on a maximum strain of 0.02 is proposed to assess the limiting temperature as compared to the traditional criteria that rely on deflection limit or deflection rate. Extensive studies carried out on steel beams with various span lengths, load ratios, beam sizes and loading types show that the proposed failure criterion gives consistent results when compared to nonlinear finite element results.

Multi-cracking modelling in concrete solved by a modified DR method

  • Our objective is to model static multi-cracking processes in concrete. The explicit dynamic relaxation (DR) method, which gives the solutions of non-linear static problems on the basis of the steady-state conditions of a critically damped explicit transient solution, is chosen to deal with the high geometric and material non-linearities stemming from such a complex fracture problem. One of the common difficulties of the DR method is its slow convergence rate when non-monotonic spectral response is involved. A modified concept that is distinct from the standard DR method is introduced to tackle this problem. The methodology is validated against the stable three point bending test on notched concrete beams of different sizes. The simulations accurately predict the experimental load-displacement curves. The size effect is caught naturally as a result of the calculation. Micro-cracking and non-uniform crack propagation across the fracture surface also come out directly from the 3D simulations.

  • Local failure of a primary structural component induced by direct air-blast loading may be itself a critical damage and lead to the partial or full collapse of the building. As an extensive research to mitigate blast-induced hazards in steel frame structure, a state-of-art analytical approach or high-fidelity computational nonlinear continuum modeling using computational fluid dynamics was described in this paper. The capability of the approach to produce reasonable blast pressures on a steel wide-flange section column was first evaluated. Parametric studies were conducted to observe the effects of section sizes and boundary conditions on behavior and failure of columns in steel frame structures. This study shows that the analytical approach is reasonable and effective to understand the nature of blast wave and complex interaction between blast loading and steel column behavior.

  • In these days, rail container service is being more important because it has relatively simple network. In addition, small lot sizes of shipment, frequent shipment, and demand for flexible service are important characteristics in rail container transportation. Efficient container operation at terminals is important in reducing transportation costs and load/unload time. This paper describes the assigning track of freight trains in the railway freight terminal. The paper addresses the operational requirements and facility restrictions to construct a mathematical model for track assignment. In addition, it suggests several types of objectives for the model.

An Experimental Study on the Heat Transfer Characteristics of High-Temperature Cylindrical Heat Pipes (고온 원관형 히트파이프의 열전달 특성에 관한 실험 연구)

  • High-temperature cylindrical sodium/stainless-steel heat pipes were manufactured and tested for transient as well as steady states. Total length of the heat pipe was 1 m and the diameter was 25.4 mm. Screen meshes of 3 different sizes were used to estimate the effect of mesh size on the thermal performance of the heat pipe. The minimum thermal resistance achieved was as low as 0.02$^{\circ}C$/W for the maximum thormal load of 2 ㎾. The average heat transfer coefficient in the evaporator was about 2,000 ㎾/$m^2$K and those in the condenser region were up to 5 times higher.

  • This work analyzes the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and journal. Aerated lubricant influences two major factors on the film formation. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change by the bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble. Those two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in certain ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Modified Reynolds' equation is developed with the consideration of aerated ratio in the lubricant and journal locus is computed with the Mobility method after the computation of two dimensional pressure distributions over the bearing area.

Wear Debris Identification of the Lubricated Machine Surface with Neural Network Model (신경회로망 모델을 이용한 기계윤활면의 마멸분 형태식별)

  • The neural network was applied to identify wear debris generated from the lubricated machine surface. The wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions. In order to describe characteristics of debris of various shapes and sizes, the four shape parameter(50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) of wear debris are used as inputs to the network and learned the friction condition of five values(material 3, applied load 1, sliding distance 1). It is shown that identification results depend on the ranges of these shape parameter learned. The three kinds of the wear debris had a different pattern characteristics and recognized the friction condition and materials very well by neural network.
