A Low Power Design of H.264 Codec Based on Hardware and Software Co-design

  • In this paper, we present a low-power design of H.264 codec based on dedicated hardware and software solution on EMP(ETRI Multi-core platform). The dedicated hardware scheme has reducing computation using motion estimation skip and reducing memory access for motion estimation. The design reduces data transfer load to 66% compared to conventional method. The gate count of H.264 encoder and the performance is about 455k and 43Mhz@30fps with D1(720x480) for H.264 encoder. The software solution is with ASIP(Application Specific Instruction Processor) that it is SIMD(Single Instruction Multiple Data), Dual Issue VLIW(Very Long Instruction Word) core, specified register file for SIMD, internal memory and data memory access for memory controller, 6 step pipeline, and 32 bits bus width. Performance and gate count is 400MHz@30fps with CIF(Common Intermediated format) and about 100k per core for H.264 decoder.

  • This paper presents a new method to reducing inrush current and energy saving of capacitor starting single-phase induction motor used in air-conditioner. It can be obtained that proposed system is low cost and small size as compared with other controller. Experiments are focused on a capacitor starting single-phase induction motor. The optimal power saving and in-rush current limiting by phase angle control are verified by experimental results. Also, auxiliary winding was controlled by electronic starting switch.

  • This paper analyzes how IT adoption affects differently on the shippers' make-buy decision, depending on the changes through agency and coordination problems. Empirical findings are consistent with the theoretical predictions on the changes of shippers' decision, summarized as follows. First, while the adoption of agency-cost reducing IT leads to the increase in the proportion of private fleets, the adoption of coordination-cost reducing IT leads to the increase in proportion of for-hire carriage. Second, the extent of private fleets changes depends on the primary product type that trucks load, with products of important service task experiencing more increase. Third, the extent of for-hire carriage changes depends on the truck's trip distance, with long-trip trucks experiencing more increase. With the results, we present different policy implications from the conventionally advocated ones.

U자형 TLD시스템에 대한 학습제어 적용 (Application of Learning Control for U-type Tuned Liquid Damper System)

  • As the structures become larger, higher and more complicated, the demand for safety level has increased. In recent years, TLD(Tuned Liquid Damper) proved to be a successful control tool for reducing structural vibrations. For this reason, the influence of some key parameters of the U-type TLD on the dynamic response is studied. And simple and effectively developed learning control logic is used to control vibration of U type Tuned Liquid Damper system. The purpose of this paper is design optimal control system to deal with unknown errors from non linearity and variation that cost modeling difficulty in complex structure and is followed with the desired behavior. Finally this hybrid control method applied to U type Tuned Liquid Damper structure gives the benefit from better performance of precision and stability of the structure by reducing vibration effect. This research leads to safety design in various structure to robust unspecified foreign disturbances such as windy-load and earthquake.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the earthquake response for the design of 100m spanned single-layer lattice dome. The plastic hinge analysis and eigenvalue buckling analysis are performed to estimate the ultimate load of single-layered lattice domes under vertical loads. In order to ensure the stability of lattice domes, it is investigated for the plastic hinge progressive status by the pushover increment analysis considering the elasto-plastic connection. One of the most effective methods to reduce the earthquake response of large span domes is to install the LRB isolation system of a dome. The authors discuss the reducing effect for the earthquake dynamic response of 100m spanned single-layered lattice domes. The LRB seismic isolation system can greatly reduce the dynamic response of lattice domes for the horizontal and vertical earthquake ground motion.

Studies on the Bleaching Efficiency in Newsprint Using Formamidine Sulfinic Acid

  • Many different types of bleaching chemicals and processes have been globally used for deinked pulp. Besides chlorine-free bleaching chemicals, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium dithionite that could be used without restriction for almost all types of fibers, chlorine-containing chemicals such as chlorine dioxide and sodium hypochlorite have also used throughout the world. Even though hydrogen peroxide is commonly used in newsprint, it could not effectively increase brightness. Experimental evaluation on the possibility of using formamidine sulfinic acid (FAS), a reducing agent, for bleaching a wood-containing deinked pulp has been carried out in this study. The effect of bleaching efficiency for FAS on operational conditions and chemical concentrations compaired to hydrogen peroxide in one and two stages was studied. FAS bleaching showed higher brightness at high temperature and low consistency, and vice versa for peroxide one. Bleaching with sodium silicate and DTPA in FAS and peroxide stage showed better results than cases without them. Sodium silicate and chelant seemed minimize the influence of transition metal ions, including manganese and iron ions, which induce both bleaching agents to decompose. As a result, FAS as a reducing agent seems more effective than hydrogen peroxide for increasing brightness and reducing yellowness. FAS and FAS sequence seemed more efficient than the other two stages of bleaching sequences with regard to the best brightness level obtained. When bleaching was conducted with FAS, COD load was just about one-third compared to peroxide, and brightness stability of the bleached pulp appeared better than peroxide after UV light irradiation.

구조물의 진동저감을 위한 수직형 면진장치 (Vertical Vibration Isolator for Reducing Structural Vibration)

  • 최근 환경 공해 저감에 대한 사회적 요구가 높아짐에 따라 구조물의 방음, 방진 설계가 더욱 중요해지고 있다. 이 논문에서는 최근 개발된 수직형 면진장치의 기본 개념 및 성능 확인 실험 결과를 제시하였다. 개발된 면진장치는 PTFE 재질 마찰면의 마찰작용을 이용하여 수직방향의 진동을 감쇠시키고 수평 및 수직으로 배치된 폴리우레탄 소재의 스프링을 통하여 복원력을 제공하는 구조이다. 성능확인 실험은 하중 재하 속도에 변화에 따른 성능 변화추이를 파악하기 위한 실험과 고정하중이 적용된 후 발생되는 진동하중 작용 시 가정된 하중-변위 특성을 확인하기 위한 실험으로 구성하였다.

Behavior of reinforced sustainable concrete hollow-core slabs

  • This study aims to trace the response of twelve one-way sustainable concrete hollow-core slabs made by reducing cement content and using replacement of coarse aggregate by plastic aggregate. The trial mixes comprise the 25, 50, 75, and 100% replacement of natural coarse aggregate. The compressive strength of the resulting lightweight concrete with full replacement of coarse aggregate by plastic aggregate was 28 MPa. These slabs are considered to have a reduced dead weight due to using lightweight aggregate and due to reducing cross-section through using voids. The samples are tested under two verticals line loads. Several parameters are varied in this study such as; nature of coarse aggregate (natural or recycled), slab line load location, the shape of the core, core diameter, flexural reinforcement ratio, and thickness of the slab. Strain gauges are used in the present study to measure the strain of steel in each slab. The test samples were fourteen one-way reinforced concrete slabs. The slab's dimensions are (1000 mm), (600 mm), (200 mm), (length, width, and thickness). The change in the shape of the core from circular to square and the use of (100 mm) side length led to reducing the weight by about (46%). The cracking and ultimate strength is reduced by about (5%-6%) respectively. With similar values of deflection. The mode of failure will remain flexural. It is recognized that when the thickness of the slab changed from (200 mm to 175 mm) the result shows a reduction in cracking and ultimate strength by about (6% and 7%) respectively.

부하 전류가 케이블의 수명에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구 (A study on the Effects of Load Current for Lifetime of Cable Systems)

  • 발전소에서 설치 운영 중이 전력 케이블 시스템에서 사고가 발생함으로써 초래되는 경제적 손실은 매우 클 뿐만이 아니라, 원상 복구하는 데 많은 시간과 비용이 필요하다. 이를 대비하기 위하여 사고를 예측하고 방지하는 기술이 필요하다. 우리는 발전소에서 운전 중인 케이블의 절연 저항을 측정하기 위하여 부하 전류와 온도와의 상관 관계를 확인 하였고, 진단 데이터를 분석 평가함으로써 케이블 시스템의 열화 상태를 파악하여 사고가 발생하기 전에 케이블 교체를 할 수 시기를 예측하게 하였다. 이 논문에서 우리는 운전 중인 6.6 kV 케이블에서 부하 전류가 수명에 미치는 영향에 대하여 연구한 결과를 소개한다. 케이블의 부하에 전류가 흐르면, 도체에 열이 발생하게 되고 케이블의 수명이 감소된다. 케이블의 부하 전류가 수명에 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위하여 수명 이론을 적용함으로써 절연저항 및 전류 측정 장치를 개발하여 운전 중인 케이블에 설치하였다.

웹 서버 클러스터에서 내용 기반으로한 부하 분산 기법 (Content_based Load Balancing Technique In Web Server Cluster)

  • 인터넷의 급속한 성장과 더불어 인기 있는 웹 사이트는 우수한 성능의 단일 서버 또는 미러(mirror) 사이트에만 의존 할 수 없을 정도로 인터넷 사용이 급증하였다. 이러한 인터넷 사용과 사용자의 급증은 과중한 전송량과 시스템의 부하문제를 야기 시켰으며 이를 해결하기 위한 여러 방안으로 클러스터 시스템이 연구되어지고 있다. 특히 클러스터의 모든 컴퓨터 성능을 최대한 발휘하기 위해서는 클라이언트의 요구를 적절히 분산시키는 스케줄링 방법이 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 웹 서버 클러스터에서 서비스 지연을 감소시키기 위해 클러스터내의 웹 서버들이 각각 서로 다른 내용을 가지는 기법을 제안한다. 이는 부하 분배기의 알고리즘을 구현하는데 있어 오버헤드를 줄이고 응답시간을 감소화 하는데 있다. 또한 부하 분배기로부터 요청을 받은 웹 서버는 부하 분배기를 거치지 않고 바로 클라이언트에게 응답을 보낸다. 성능 측정을 통해 기존의 다른 방식보다 제한한 기법이 보다 우수함을 보이고, 응답시간에서도 기존의 RR(Round Robin)과 LC(Least Connection) 방식보다 제안한 웹 서버 클러스터 기법이 각각 16%, 14% 짧다는 것을 보인다.
