  • This study was carried out to provide fundamental data for reuse of resources and prevention of environmental pollution Actual states of environmental pollution by biological production facilities were investigated. Various pollution loads and quantity of wastes from greenhouse and animal housings estimated. In greenhouse contents of investigation were wastes of plastic cover, noise of heater and fan, air pollutant of heater, and wastes of soilless culture system, etc. In animal housings, those were actual state of livestock waste treatment and reuse, pollutant mass unit discharge, noise pollution, and malodorant, etc. The main pollutants discharged from greenhouses were wastes of plastic cover, rockwool, and waste fluid of nutrient solution. Developments of waste disposal methods for plastic cover and rockwool are required. And recycle technique of nutrient solution for soilless culture should be developed and propagated. With the buildup of legal control, pollutant mass discharged from livestock wastes are, on the decrease. The other side, reuse of livestock excreta increased. Most animal housings are located near the dwelling house. Malodorant and noise from animal housings have bad effects on the rural living conditions. So developments of integrated complex for small scale livestock farms are required.

  • Plastics are consistently produced owing to their practicality and convenience. Unmanaged plastics enter the oceans, where they adversely impact marine life, and their degradation into nano-plastics due to sunlight and weathering is of concern for all living beings. Nano-plastics affect humans via the food chain, emphasizing the necessity for effective solutions. Microbial biodegradation has been suggested as a solution, offering the advantages of minimal environmental impact and the utilization of decomposition byproducts in microbial metabolic pathways. In this study, fifty-seven bacterial strains were isolated and identified from a waste-treatment facility. Cultivation in a minimum medium with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) beads as the sole carbon source resulted in the selection of the LDPE-degrading strain Acinetobacter guillouiae PL211. The selected strain was cultured at high cell density with LDPE as a carbon source, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis confirmed chemical changes on the LDPE bead's surface. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis revealed substantial biodegradation of the LDPE surface. These results demonstrated the capability of A. guillouiae PL211 to biodegrade LDPE beads. This discovery demonstrates the potential of an environmentally friendly process to addressing polyethylene waste issues.

  • The aims of this study are to investigate the environmental perception of elementary school students through picture drawing and associated words about environment, and analyze whether there are differences in the environmental perception according to living places and grades. The drawing of 230 students are analysed and categorized into the criteria. The results are as follows: a number of students realized as images associated with natural environment for words related to environment. In the pictures of the 'positive environment', expression frequencies of natural environment and living things were higher than ones of artificial environment and non-living things. On the other hand, there were many pictures expressed as pollutions of waste, air and water in the pictures of the 'negative environment'. Comparison of environmental perception between rural and urban students showed a significant difference all in the two criteria. There was, however, no difference in the environmental perception between grades. Therefore, it is suggested that student's minds about the sentimental situation can be studied and they can be guided in positive directions to lead their future life in environment-friendly education rather than pollution education.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the design parameters, which are applied to the solid waste treatment and management systems in rural area. In order to drive out the parameters, the solid waste production and management systems in rural and urban areas had been surveyed and analyzed, respectively. The comparisons of the analyzed results are also introduced in the paper. The rural areas referred to the survey are grouped in accordance with the industrial activities in those areas. The conclusions of the study are as follows: 1) The solid waste volumes produced per day per capita in rural area are less than those of urban area. For example, the average volume produced in rural area in 1995 is 0.85kg, which is two thirds of those in Seoul area. 2) for the treatment, the country has depended mainly on landfill. On the other hand, the incineration treatment ratio has been in creasing in rural area. 3) The physical and chemical properties of the rural solid waste, according to the analysis, are similar to those of the urban areas, which means the living pattern in those two areas have a little difference.

  • Construction waste is known to include a large part of coarse and fine aggregates, which can be recirculated in the industry. Separating those aggregates economically from the waste has been thus considered to be one of the most important issues in this field. In particular, paste mixed in the waste causes significant complain from the inhabitants living near the place where waste-processing equipments are built and operated. In this study, we investigate the operational principle of a newly developed paste separator by using theoretical (in this first part) and CFD (in the second part) analysis. The separator consists of a rotor which turned out to play a significant role in separating those pastes from the aggregates. Under suitable assumptions regarding the air flow velocity as well as the particle velocity, we show that particles can be stagnant at the outlet of the roto channel for a wide range of parameter values, which allow the particles to get enough time to settle down via the gravitation. We also demonstrate such phenomenon by using a simple numerical simulation.

  • People could not imagine living without tab water. However, the water filtering process at a purification plant used to produce tab water creates tons of sludge, which is generally wasted. This sludge waste consists of (1) mineral elements, such as sand, (2) organic materials, and (3) a coagulant, which agglomerates the two. As an enormous amount of sludge waste is generated every year, numerous studies have been carried out to identify how to deal with this problem. Currently, however, most of the sludge waste is directly discarded in landfills. In the present study, water-purified sludge waste received a heat treatment at $1300^{\circ}C$ and was then ground into particles to be used as a ceramic material. Next, the resultant particles were compounded with chamotte substitutes to produce grogged clay that is suitable for wheel-throwing ceramics. Consequently, the plasticity of the sludge waste decreased as the content of calcination increased. Thus, it is considered that wheel throwing is available only up to PBF-3. Thus, it is available for wheel throwing and has a high strength of 864 $kgf/cm^2$ with less than 0.2 percent of porosity and absorption ratio were displayed in PBF-2 at $1280^{\circ}C$ with 20 percent of calcination from the purified sludge. Therefore, the PBF-2 body produced in this study was considered to be capable of replacing grogged clay in the market.

  • To prepare for the changes in the future, this study considered people in their seventies and eighties in rural areas in the last decade. Based on a survey of rural life by the Rural Development Administration, all factors were analyzed using SAS ver. 9.3. The rate of rice farming decreased, and vegetable-cultivation increased from 8.4% in 2001 to and 26.6% in 2008 for people in their seventies and eighties. The number of family members decreased to 1.96 in 2010 from 2.04 in 2001, and annual income increased by KRW 20-29 million for those in their seventies and eighties, whereas it was more than KRW 30 million for those in their forties. Bathing with warm water increased to 88.9% from 69.8%, and household waste treated by self-incineration decreased from 86.4% to 40.0% in the last decade. Separate collection spread since 2008. Food waste disposal and the burial (46.0%) showed had for people in their seventies and eighties, and animal feed increased (50.7%) for those in their forties at 2001. The separate collection increased by 39.6% in 2010 for those in their seventies and eighties and by 53.5% for those in their forties(p<0.05). The manufacture of jang and kimchi showed were little annual changes for people in their seventies and eighties. Food storage processing was higher for those in their forties. For those in their seventies and eighties, food group intake over the 2004-2010 period increased from 3.3 times a week to 4.2 times a week for protein foods and from 4.9 times a week to 5.5 times a week for vegetables. There was no change in fruits, milk, and seaweeds for those in their seventies and eighties, but there was an increase for those in their forties. The results suggest the continued increase in the manufacture of jang and kimchi and protein and vegetable intake for those in their seventies and eighties. Some direction to welfare, mechanized rice planting and living with neighbors together would be continued with good nutrition for elderly residents.

  • Generation of Solid Wastes grew rapidly with the increase of living standard of the people in Korea recently and their composition was more complicate. The weight of Solid wastes generated in Seoul into year of 1979 was about 420 million tons which required 1.5 million $m^2$ of burial land and daily generation for person was 1.6kg. The Composition of more than 80% ash contents was suitable for sanitary landfill but recently ash was decreasing while paper, synthetic materials, glass etc, increasing and alternative method had to be found to dispose the wastes properly. Weight and Composition of Wastes by season and living standard were surveyed for one year from June 1980 to May 1981 in Seoul. Disposal mathods by waste composition was studied. Results were summarized as follows: 1) Each component stored separately at generation point was to be collected and to be reused or disposed by public organization or private company. Some incentives have to be arranged. 2) Wastes collected from household were transfeted to about 420 temporally storing places and transported to two dumping areas by about 700, 4-8 tons trucks which droped litters on the streets. Large dumping lots should constructed along the western coasts and the wastes would be transported through big container trucks or trains to the lots. 3) Ash contents decreased to 40-70% while garbage, synthetic materials, paper increased and they are two to three times in summer of those in winter. Ash in affluent residential areas is less than 50% of whole wastes while that in poor apartment and residential areas is 60-70%. 4) Large dumping places should be constructed along the western coasts which are not far from Seoul because no suitalbe lands are available, and proper leakage protection arrangements should be made.

  • Environmental and public health concern for the emission of air pollutants from burn-up process in waste incineration plants located in the vicinity of living environment was increased during the past decade. The purpose of this study was to suggest of the simple and rapid method of priority setting model for the decision of full-scale public health assessment. This method was consists of total 5-step. Step 1 was "secure the satellite map" and we can use the satellite map which serves from the website such as NAVER Co. Step 2 was "drawing mesh on the map" for catch the point of occupation of environmental sensitivity facilities, and step 3 was "identification and sorting of the facilities", Step 4 was "setting of weight" using the "weighted linear combination (WLC) method". Finally, all facility was sorted by score. As a result, we can set a priority of 145 facilities based on 177 facilities which managed in local government. Facilities in Seoul metropolitan area was high rank in priority list. On the other side, Facilities located at the country or rural area was low rank because of low occupation of the house and the environmental sensitivity facilities such as kindergarten, elementary school, and hospital. In this study, we suggested simple and rapid method that using for screening procedure of public health assessment.

  • The present study attempts to understand the emission pattern of greenhouse gases in people's daily life through the estimation and analysis of the amount and characteristics of the greenhouse gases. Based on the survey of 1,000 people throughout the nation, monthly emission of greenhouse gases per-capita was estimated from their use of fuels, electricity, water, and personal and public transportation means in addition to their waste generation. In the case of personal car drivers, greenhouse gas emission was the greatest from their cars, followed by the emission from electricity, fuels, and public transportation. Emission from water consumption and waste generation was relatively low. Fuel consumption varied depending on the number of household members, their housing type, and the size of their living spaces. Results showed that single-person households emitted the largest amount of per-capita greenhouse gas while greenhouse gas emission from electricity was inversely proportional to the number of persons in a given household.
