  • NIR has been extensively used to predict directly measurable properties of materials that are important to the appropriate industries. Commonly, NIR is used to perform fast, routine tests to improve control response as against the response time for the (normally chemical) base test. This paper discusses the use of NIR to measure indirect properties of materials. In these cases, the pure chemical or physical tests are either unable measure the appropriate parameters (eg GMO modification) or there are mitigating effects that are not properly addressed by the base tests. In particular, we looked at the digestible portion of amino acids within meat and bone meal. This is the desired response measurement by end-users of the product (intensive livestock producers) but is currently unable to be offered as a measurement by producers. The base test method is by controlled feeding trials. These are somewhat cumbersome, taking 2-3 months, involving several sets of animals, and considerable expense. A shortened test (feed trial based) would be of little use, as the precision blows out over short period feeding trials. For example, a rat ileal digestibility test requires around 2 months, and costs some $USD1000. This is clearly impractical test for a producer involved in continuous production, with a 1-2 day turn around. While the amino acid abundance is accessible chemically, the uptake of amino acids into usable material by mammalian species is not simply related to the measured abundance within the material. There are many co-related material properties that might help or hinder uptake, some chemical based (eg protein damage), some indirect (eg palatability), some physiological (intestinal tract response vs speed of throughput). We discuss the approaches taken to provide a suitable reference data set, and present the derived prediction and validation relationships.

Construction of Recombinant Pichia pastoris Carrying a Constitutive AvBD9 Gene and Analysis of Its Activity

  • Avian beta-defensin 9 (AvBD9) is a small cationic peptide consisting of 41 amino acids that plays a crucial rule in innate immunity and acquired immunity in chickens. Owing to its wide antibacterial spectrum, lack of a residue, and failure to induce bacterial drug resistance, AvBD9 is expected to become a substitute for conventional antibiotics in the livestock and poultry industries. Using the preferred codon of Pichia pastoris, the mature AvBD9 peptide was designed and synthesized, based on the sequence from GenBank. The P. pastoris constitutive expression vector pGHKα was used to construct a pGHKα-AvBD9 recombinant plasmid. Restriction enzyme digestion was performed using SacI and BglII to remove the ampicillin resistance gene, and the plasmid was electrotransformed into P. pastoris GS115. High-expression strains with G418 resistance were screened, and the culture supernatant was analyzed by Tricine-SDS-PAGE and western blot assay to identify target bands of about 6 kDa. A concentrate of the supernatant containing AvBD9 was used for determination of antimicrobial activity. The supernatant concentrate was effective against Escherichia coli, Salmonella paratyphi, Salmonella pullorum, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, and Enterobacter cloacae. The fermentation product of P. pastoris carrying the recombinant AvBD9 plasmid was adjusted to 1.0 × 108 CFU/ml and added to the drinking water of white feather broilers at different concentrations. The daily average weight gain and immune organ indices in broilers older than 7 days were significantly improved by the AvBD9 treatment.

  • Modeling the consumer demand of fresh meat requires its distinct feature which other types of food product does not have. Most of the fresh meat products are likely to be unbranded, bought on a weight basis and affected by macro shocks such as seasonality, holiday effect and the disease incidence. Furthermore, consumers tend to purchase multiple categories of fresh meat in a week. Therefore, we apply a multiple discrete/continuous model on fresh meat consumption data to study the effect of macro shocks on fresh meat sales as well as of price change. As a result shows, Each fresh meat is relatively more likely to be bought in peak season of each fresh meat compared with imported pork which is set as a 'reference category' in this analysis. For clarity of the effect of disease incidence, we perform further analysis regarding the effect of livestock disease on fresh meat purchase probability. It shows that the avian flu in 2014 has strong negative impact on the purchase probability of chicken and the foot-and-mouth disease has negative impact on the purchase probability of pork and beef for part of outbreak periods.

Waste Reuse in Sugar Industries

  • Pakistan being the 6$^{th}$ largest sugar producer has over 75 sugar mills with annual production capacity of about 2.4 million tons during 1996-97. The contribution of Sindh with 27 sugar mills is recorded over 50% of the total sugar production. The majority of the mills in Pakistan use the Defecation-Remelt-Phosphitation (DRP; 24 mills), Defecation-Remelt-Carbonation (DRC; 21 mills) and Defecation-Remelt Carbonation and Sulphitation (DRCS; 11 mills) process. Seven of the 75 sugar mills in Pakistan also produce industrial alcohol from molasses, a by- product of sugar manufacturing process. These sugar industries also produce fly ash, which have been found to contain unburned carbon and reach as far as four-kilo meter area with the wind direction, threatening the community health of people living around, besides posing other aesthetic problems. The untreated wastewater, in many cases, finds its way to open surface drains causing serious threat to livestock, flora and fauna. One study showed that fly ash emitted from the chimneys contain particle size ranging from 38 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1000 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. About 50 per cent of each fly ash samples were above 300 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size and were mostly unburned Carbon particles, which produced 85% weight loss on burning in air atmosphere at 1000${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. This fly ash (mostly carbon) was the main cause of many health and aesthetic problems in the sugar mill vicinity. The environmental challenge for the local sugar mills is associated with liquid waste gaseous emission and solid waste. This paper discusses various waste recycling technologies and practices in sugar industries of Pakistan. The application of EM technology and Biogas technology has proved very successful in reusing the sugar industry wastewater and mud, which otherwise were going waste.

Determination of Shelf Life for Butter and Cheese Products in Actual and Accelerated Conditions

  • The aim of this study was to estimate the shelf life of butter and cheese products, with shelf life being a guide used to determine the storage period of food before deterioration. Butter and cheese samples stored at $10^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$ had a shelf life of 221 d, while those stored at $25^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ had a shelf life of 109 d. Quality changes, including total cell count, coliform counts, Listeria monocytogenes counts, acid value, moisture content, pH, acidity and overall sensory evaluation, were monitored. In order to pass the overall sensory evaluation, a quality score of 5 points on a 9-point scale was required. For other quality criteria, legal quality limits were established based on the "Process Criteria and Ingredient Standard of Livestock Products" by the Animal, Plant and Fisheries Quarantine and Inspection Agency (Republic of Korea). The nonlegal quality limit was estimated by regression analysis between non-quality criteria (y) and overall sensory evaluation (x). The shelf life was estimated based on the number of days that the product passed the quality limit of the quality criteria. The shelf life of samples stored at $10^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ was 21.94, 17.18, 6.10 and 0.58 mon, respectively, for butter and 10.81, 9.47, 4.64 and 0.20 mon, respectively, for cheese.

Status of meat alternatives and their potential role in the future meat market - A review

  • Plant-based meat analogues, edible insects, and cultured meat are promising major meat alternatives that can be used as protein sources in the future. It is also believed that the importance of meat alternatives will continue to increase because of concerns on limited sustainability of the traditional meat production system. The meat alternatives are expected to have different roles based on their different benefits and limitations. Plant-based meat analogues and edible insects can replace traditional meat as a good protein source from the perspective of nutritional value. Furthermore, plant-based meat can be made available to a wide range of consumers (e.g., as vegetarian or halal food products). However, despite ongoing technical developments, their palatability, including appearance, flavor, and texture, is still different from the consumers' standard established from livestock-based traditional meat. Meanwhile, cultured meat is the only method to produce actual animal muscle-based meat; therefore, the final product is more meat-like compared to other meat analogues. However, technical difficulties, especially in mass production and cost, remain before it can be commercialized. Nevertheless, these meat alternatives can be a part of our future protein sources while maintaining a complementary relationship with traditional meat.

The Studies of Photocatalyst Development and the Optimum Operation Conditions for the Removal of Ammonia in a Mixed Reactor of Liquid-vapor Phase (기-액 복합 광반응기에서의 악취성 암모니아 제거를 위한 촉매개발과 반응시스템의 최적조건 색출 연구)

  • Ammonia is a major compound of odor in livestock house. To enhance the performance of ammonia oxidation (decomposition). the gas-liquid, two phase photocatalytic oxidation system was designed and prepared in this study. Commercial P-25 as $TiO_2$ catalyst was used for ammonia decomposition. V/P-25 catalyst prepared by sol gel method was also used for the removal of by-producted $NO_x$ in $NH_3$ oxidation reaction. When $TiO_2$ was used as a photocatalyst, the conversion to $N_2$ in ammonia decomposition reached above 90% until 200hr (The air flow rate of 4L/min with the ammonia concentration up to 25ppm.). However, considerable amounts of NO and $NO_2$ were formed as a result of $NH_3$ oxidation (as a by-product). Therefore, we added Vanadia impregnated $TiO_2$(P-25) catalyst for the removal of $NO_x$ at the end of reaction trail. The results of a pilot-scale operation were successful to achieve the simultaneous removal of $NH_3\;and\;NO_x$ about 81 and 87%, respectively.

Utilization of Rice Straw and Different Treatments to Improve Its Feed Value for Ruminants: A Review

  • This paper gives an overview of the availability, nutritive quality, and possible strategies to improve the utilization of rice straw as a feed ingredient for ruminants. Approximately 80% of the rice in the world is grown by small-scale farmers in developing countries, including South East Asia. The large amount of rice straw as a by-product of the rice production is mainly used as a source of feed for ruminant livestock. Rice straw is rich in polysaccharides and has a high lignin and silica content, limiting voluntary intake and reducing degradability by ruminal microorganisms. Several methods to improve the utilization of rice straw by ruminants have been investigated in the past. However, some physical treatments are not practical because of the requirement for machinery or treatments are not economical feasible for the farmers. Chemical treatments, such as NaOH, $NH_3$ or urea, currently seem to be more practical for onfarm use. Alternative treatments to improve the nutritive value of rice straw are the use of ligninolytic fungi (white-rot fungi), with their extracellular ligninolytic enzymes, or specific enzymes degrading cellulose and/or hemicellulose. The use of fungi or enzyme treatments is expected to be a more practical and environmental-friendly approach for enhancing the nutritive value of rice straw and can be costeffective in the future. Using fungi and enzymes might be combined with the more classical chemical or physical treatments. However, available data on using fungi and enzymes for improving the quality of rice straw are relatively scarce.

Quality Comparisons of Canned Deer Meat Produce with BBQ and Jangjorim Sauce (바비큐 및 장조림 소스로 제조한 사슴고기 통조림 제품의 품질특성 비교)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the quality characteristics of canned deer meat produce with prepared BBQ sauce (T1) and Jangjorim sauce (T2). The mixture were stuffed into cylindrical can (about 150 g each) and thermally processed at $121^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, the sample were stored at $30{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 60 days and analyzed with an interval of 30 days. pH, salinity, saccarinity of T1 were significantly lower (p<0.05) than that of T2. TBARS and VBN of T1 were significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of T2. In the result of sensory evaluation, all product obtained good score (p>6.0) in overall acceptability during whole storage at $30{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Theses result should be useful in developing guidelines for canned deer meat preparation by consumer and processors.

Study on Animal Production and Disease Affected by Different Varieties of Tall Feacue and White Clover in Mixed Grazing Pasture I.   • This study was carried out to obtain good livestock production in comparison with 3 different pasture mixture (Control : TI = Potomac orchardgrass + Bastion perennial ryegrass + Fawn tall fescue + Regal white clover, T2 = Potomac orchardgrass + Bastion perennial ryegrass + Roa tall fescue + Regal white clover, T3 = Potomac orchardgrass + Bastion perennial ryegrass + Roa tall fescue + Tahora white clover) by grazing experiment used 45 dairy calves (about lOOkg liveweight) during the period from April to October, 1994 at the Isidole farm, Cheju. Daily liveweight gains of calves grazed during the experiment period were 331${\pm}$29, 352${\pm}$4, 356${\pm}$18g in treatment 1, 2 and 3 respectively, but did not get statistically significant difference. On compared the results with the period investigated, the period which was highest in daily liveweight gain was early grazing season b m May to June while the period shown to be lowest in daily liveweight gain was between late July and late August. Hehage intake rate did not get significant difference among treatments with results shown as 67${\pm}$1.2, 62${\pm}$5.1, 60${\pm}$9.6% in treatment 1, 2 and 3 respectively. And efficiency of conversation into animal product was high in treatment 2. It is considered that good results were not obtained in this study because tall fescue and white clover, important species in this trial did not cover the pasture well with slow establishment in 1st year after seeding.
