우주발사체 탑재용 리튬이온 배터리 개발 (Development of Lithium-Ion based Onboard Battery for Space Launch Vehicle)

  • 높은 중량에너지밀도로 배터리 무게를 줄일 수 있는 장점을 갖는 리튬이온 배터리는 중량이 중요한 관심사인 많은 항공우주 응용분야에서 빠른 속도로 Ni-Cd, Ni-H2 등의 기존 배터리를 대체하고 있다. 또한 리튬이온 배터리는 낮은 열 손실 특성과 높은 에너지 효율 그리고 저렴한 셀 단가를 갖는다. 80개의 소니 US18650 리튬이온 셀을 사용한 KSLV-I 탑재배터리 모듈은 셀을 8개씩 직렬로 구성한 후 각 열을 병렬로 10개 연결하여 요구되는 전압과 용량을 공급한다. 본 논문에서는 우주발사체용 리튬이온 배터리의 설계 및 그 특성에 대해 소개하며, 예상되는 우주환경에서 배터리가 신뢰성 있게 동작하는지를 검증하는 환경시험 프로그램 절차를 보였다. 배터리 성능은 전자부하기를 이용한 시뮬레이션 시험을 통해 확인하였고 발사체 2단에 장착하여 각 전장품들과의 연계시험을 통해 검증하였다.

유기전해액 $LiMn_{2}O_{4}$/Lithium 전지의 전기화학적 특성 (Electrochemical Characteristics of $LiMn_{2}O_{4}$/Lithium Cells in Organic Electrolyte)

  • The electrochemical properties of LiM $n_2$ $O_4$as a cathode and an anode for the lithium secondary battery were evaluated. When LiM $n_2$ $O_4$ material was used as the cathode with the current collector of aluminum, the 1st specific capacity and the 1st Ah efficiency in LiM $n_2$ $O_4$/lithium cell were 123 mAh/g and 91.7%, respectively The anodic properties of LiM $n_2$ $O_4$ material was also evaluated in the LiM $n_2$ $O_4$/1ithium cell with the current collector of copper. It showed that the LiM $n_2$ $O_4$ was useful as the anode for the lithium secondary battery. During the 1st discharge, a potential plateau was observed at the potential of 0.3 $V_{Li}$ Li+/. The 1st specific charge capacity and the 1st specific discharge capacity were 790 mAh/s and 362 mAh/g, respectively. Therefore, the 1st Ah efficiency was 46%. The discharge capacity was gradually faded with the charge-discharge cycling to about 50th cycles. Thereafter, the discharge capacity was stabilized to about 110 mAh/g.

NCM계 리튬이온 배터리 양극재의 수소환원 거동 (Hydrogen Reduction Behavior of NCM-based Lithium-ion Battery Cathode Materials)

  • As the demand for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles is increasing, it is important to recover valuable metals from waste lithium-ion batteries. In this study, the effects of gas flow rate and hydrogen partial pressure on hydrogen reduction of NCM-based lithium-ion battery cathode materials were investigated. As the gas flow rate and hydrogen partial pressure increased, the weight loss rate increased significantly from the beginning of the reaction due to the reduction of NiO and CoO by hydrogen. At 700 ℃ and hydrogen partial pressure above 0.5 atm, Ni and Li2O were produced by hydrogen reduction. From the reduction product and Li recovery rate, the hydrogen reduction of NCM-based cathode materials was significantly affected by hydrogen partial pressure. The Li compounds recovered from the solution after water leaching of the reduction products were LiOH, LiOH·H2O, and Li2CO3, with about 0.02 wt% Al as an impurity.

A Modularized Two-Stage Charge Equalization Converter for Series Connected Lithium-Ion Battery Strings

  • This paper proposes a modularized two-stage charge equalization converter for a series-connected lithium-ion battery string. In this paper, the series-connected battery sting is modularized into M modules, and each module has K cells in series. With this modularization, low voltage stress on the electronic devices can be achieved. A two-stage dc-dc converter with cell selection switches is employed. The first stage dc-dc converter steps down the high bus voltage to about 10 V. The second stage dc-dc converter integrated with selection switches equalizes the cell voltages. A prototype for 88 lithium-ion battery cells is optimally designed and implemented. Experimental results verify that the proposed equalization method has good cell balancing performance showing low voltage stress, small size, and low cost.

  • Bimodal Tram is driven by both engine and Lithium Polymer battery pack which consists with 168 cells of LPB(80Ah, 650Vdc). LPB pack is very frequently charged and discharged in driving. Temperature inside of LPB pack makes an great effect on both charging and discharging capacity which seem to be related with LPB internal resistance. LPB internal resistance is increasing or little decreasing with the decreased temperature under 10 - $20^{\circ}C$ and the increased temperature over $30^{\circ}C$ which is similar to the temperature characteristics of single LPB cell. This paper has analyzed the driving characteristics of LPB pack for bimodal tram is running with either battery mode or hybrid mode.

  • 리튬이온 전지의 양극은 다양한 종류의 전이금속재료로 구성되며, 전지의 성능은 양극을 구성하는 금속재료에 의해 많은 영향을 받는다. 이는, 양극 내부에서 리튬이온의 확산 및 상전이 양상이 재료마다 서로 다르게 나타나기 때문이다. 따라서, 충방전 시 양극 내부 리튬이온의 확산 및 상전이를 이해하는 것은 고용량, 고전압 리튬 이차전지를 설계하기 위해 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 phase field model을 바탕으로 양극 내부의 리튬이온 확산 및 상전이 과정을 분석한다.

  • Advanced polymeric binders with unique functions such as improvements in the electronic conduction network, mechanical adhesion, and mechanical durability during cycling have recently gained an increasing amount of attention as a promising means of creating high-performance silicon (Si) anodes in lithium-ion batteries with high energy density levels. In this review, we describe the key challenges of Si anodes, particularly highlighting the recent progress in the area of polymeric binders for Si anodes in cells.

  • Charge equalization scheme for HEV lithium-ion battery system is proposed in this paper, where all the primary windings with in parallel bi-directional switches are coupled in series to provide the equalizing energy from the whole battery string to the specific under charged cells. Moreover, to realize minimized size of equalization circuit employing the proposed cell balancing scheme, the optimal power rating design rule according to equalization time and SOC distribution of imbalance is proposed. A prototype of HEV lithium-ion battery system of four cells shows the outstanding charge equalization performance while maintaining greatly reduced size of cell balancing circuit.

State-of-charge Estimation for Lithium-ion Battery using a Combined Method

  • An accurate state-of-charge (SOC) estimation ensures the reliable and efficient operation of a lithium-ion battery management system. On the basis of a combined electrochemical model, this study adopts the forgetting factor least squares algorithm to identify battery parameters and eliminate the influence of test conditions. Then, it implements online SOC estimation with high accuracy and low run time by utilizing the low computational complexity of the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and the rapid convergence of a particle filter (PF). The PF algorithm is adopted to decrease convergence time when the initial error is large; otherwise, the UKF algorithm is used to approximate the actual SOC with low computational complexity. The effect of the number of sampling particles in the PF is also evaluated. Finally, experimental results are used to verify the superiority of the combined method over other individual algorithms.

  • Silicon has been developed as an alternate anode material for lithium secondary batteries. A simple approach to improve the electrical contact of silicon powder has described. Carbon-coated and silver-coated silicon have been prepared by chemical vapor deposition and electroless plating respectively. Assembled cells, which consisted of surface modified silicon, lithium foil and $Li^+$ contained organic electrolyte, have been studied using electrochemical methods. Carbon-coated silicon was improved in the electrochemical performance such as reversibility and resistance compared to surface-unmodified silicon.
