  • Objectives : The objective of this paper is to study the literature on stagnation pattern, to further determine reasoning for the emphasis on Liver-qi stagnation out of all the Five Zang stagnation patterns. Methods : Stagnation patterns in literature from the Xian-Qin/Liang-Han period, Sui-Tang-Song period, Jin-Yuan period and Ming-Qing period were studied and analyzed. Results & Conclusions : Based on chronological analysis on discussions of stagnation pattern, the Five stagnation in the Neijing were related to the excessiveness and deficiency of the Five circuits. After the discussions of the Four Masters of the Jin-Yuan period, WangAndao explained that stagnation could happen without relation to external contraction in his discussion of Benqiziyubing. Yutuan focused on the inter-relationship between the six stagnation patterns, emphasizing qi stagnation, while Sunyikui discussed stagnation pattern within the framework of the Five Zang stagnation. Zhaoxianke argued for the first time that one of the treatment methods of Wood stagnation could replace the five treatment methods, focusing on Wood stagnation which could be the clue to stagnation pattern. Of current Zangfu diagnostic terminology, the influential Liver qi stagnation remains to this day.

  • Ujaegyeong(尤在涇) is a doctor of the Cheong Dynasty[淸代], whose works include "Geumgweyoryaksimjeon", "Shanghangwanjujip(傷寒貫珠集)", and "Uihakdokseogi(醫學讀書記)". Much research has been done on "Geumgweyoryaksimjeon" and "Shanghangwanjujip", but "Uihakdokseogi" has seen relatively little interest. This study aims to translate the first volume of "Uihakdokseogi" and compare the work with other literature in order to gain a better understanding of Ujaegyeong(尤在涇)'s medical theories and to review the viability of the said theories in practice. "Uihakdokseogi" is a casual work which mentions U's thoughts on various problems found through extensive studying or in practice. The book does not focus on a single topic. Thus, the spectrum of the work is broad and is filled with problems which would interest most medical professionals.

  • Objectives : Korea and China are applying different conversion standards for weight in traditional medicine books. This study aims to research and suggest how to convert the units of weight in old traditional medicine classics into the contemporary unit of grams. Methods : Historical documents of Korea and China were used to review the process in which weights and measures changed in each country and the manners in which the Chinese units of weight were introduced to Korea. Results : Weights and measures changed with time. They became almost standardized by the period of Song in China, when coins played the most crucial role, and it was introduced to Korea. Donggaryang, the standard container for weights and measures in ancient China, Gaewontongbo, a coin in Tang, Sangpyeongtongbo, a coin in Joseon, and a scale in Joseon were used as strong foundations for conclusion from literature review. Weight of a 1-don(coin) in the time a traditional medicine books were written was used as a unit of weight in those books. Sangpyeongtongbo, a 1-don coin in Joseon, weighs 4 grams on average. Conclusions : Since the current conversion of 1-don coin into 3.75 grams is not supported by literature review, it is suggested that 1-don(coin) as a unit of weight in traditional medicine books of Joseon, may be better converted into 4 grams, while that of China is converted to 3.73 grams.

  • Objectives : This study aims to investigate a wide range of symptoms related to anger and their corresponding treatments as described in Traditional Korean Medical literature. Additionally, the study aims to propose key prescriptions for Intermittent Explosive Disorder(IED), thereby striving to explore potential therapeutic strategies. Methods : This comprehensive study examines the correlations between the pathologies, symptoms, and treatments related to anger, as described in the Yixuerumen (醫學入門), the Donguibogam (東醫寶鑑), and the Xiezhenglun (血證論), and their relevance to IED. Results : Anger impairs the liver, giving rise to a spectrum of symptoms including dry hair, headaches, dizziness, a bitter taste in the mouth, tinnitus, vomiting of blood, sharp chest and flank pains, abdominal discomfort, tremors, diarrhea, and hyperventilation. Furthermore, this heightened anger can serve as a potential trigger for strokes and, considering its potential to hinder recovery from various other conditions, calls for proactive therapeutic intervention. Conclusions : Severe anger has the potential to trigger strokes and hinder recovery from a range of illnesses, underscoring the necessity for tailored and proactive treatment based on the severity of symptoms. In the instance of IED, clinical application of the Danggui Luihuiwan (當歸蘆薈丸) is warranted.

  • Based on 11 Classics of Materia Medica designated by Ministry of health and welfare bulletin 1995-15 as legal basis in scope and preparation of herbal prescription, we reviewed indication, property and processing of Rhus Verniciflua Stokes which appear extensively in literature since earlier Joseon Dynasty. Following is the conclusion of this review after comparing with 'Korean Pharmacopoeia: commentary on herbal product standard'. 1. The properties of Rhus Verniciflua Stokes in 'Korean Pharmacopoeia :commentary on herbal product standard' should be changed as 'Tonifying the middle, restoring the muscle, fulfilling marrow, breaking old static blood, tonifying and activating after removing mass, unblocking the meridian, killing worms' and indication should be changed as 'Old static blood, deep rooted mass, wind-cold-dampness arthralgia, cough, 9 types of chest pain, abdominal or flank accumulation of stagnated qi[氣], amenorrhea, hernia mass, small bowel or bladder colic pain, abdominal pain due to worm accumulation'. 2. The processing of Rhus Verniciflua Stokes in 'Korean Pharmacopoeia: commentary on herbal product standard' should include 'natural drying or steaming drying followed by grinding and stir-baking until ripened or smoking appears'.

  • Object : From the ancient times, the importance of childbirth has been well recognized by Korean Traditional Medicine. Numeral methods have been developed to ease the labor process and keep the mother and child healthy from conception to labor. Bulsusan(佛手散) is one of the main remedies to healthy labor in KTM, both widely known and applied as well. Method : This paper examines the labor theory and practice of KTM focused on Bulsusan which is composed of Angelica gigas Nakai(當歸) and Cnidium officinale MAKINO(川芎). Result : 1. From the ancient times until the Q$\bar{i}$ng period, much attention was placed to the handling of the placenta, as it was conceived as bearing much relation to the health of the mother and her fate, and thus included in the labor process. 2. There was a recognition of the 'birth pulse[離經脈]', an intense change in the pulse that presents itself prior to somatic signs of labor. 3. There were numerous prescriptions that were administered beforehand to ease the process. They are mostly constituted with medicinals that nurture Gi(氣) and stimulate its flow, which in turn makes the fetus firm and reduces the volume, easing the labor process. 4. The medical practice of labor-induction was called 'Choesaeng(催生)'. The prescriptions which functioned as such were mostly constituted with blood medicinals such as Angelica gigas Nakai and Cnidium officinale MAKINO, those which nurture both Gi(氣) and blood, and medicinals that physically lubricate the labor pathway such as honey, oil and Talcum(滑石). Conclusion : Bulsusan can be used in most problems concerning pregnancy and labor, and cases of emergency blood loss due to injury. The term 'bulsu(佛手)' infers to the medical ability of the great doctor who takes care of major blood-loss situations resulting from discharge of dead fetus, cesarean delivery, etc. The prescription name takes after this meaning, as it deals with similar conditions in its effect.

Although Gigong(氣功, Qigong) - neither itself nor its postulated mechanism of action - are within the paradigm of modern Western medical science, effects on the human body could be possible. Objectives : This study aims to review the bibliography, biological responses and therapeutic effects of Gigong. In the process, this review will grasp trends in this field of studies and will direct further researches into the right direction. Method : The computerized Korean databases were searched from their respective inceptions up to January 2008. The search terms used were 'Gi(氣, Qi)', 'Gigong(氣功, Qigong)', 'Doin(導引)', 'Training', 'Bioenergy', 'life nurturing' and random or Korean language terms related to Gigong. Several specialized journals were also manually searched for relevant articles. Result : Since the 1990's, Gigong papers in the Korean Literature is increased. Clinical research studies are among the most control design study. Research subjects are less patient than the general public. The most common treatment disease was Musculo-skeletal disorder Conclusions : The depth study for the each Gigong(氣功, Qigong) is needed. Specifically, I think it should be a clinical studies and qualitative research methods for evaluation are needed.

  • Various materials related the names of objects were published in the late Joseon Dynasty. The medicine-related vocabulary contained in these data is important data for examining the practice of medicine at the time. Jaemulbo (Genealogy of talent and things) is a document on the names of things written by Lee Man-young in 1798. Through this study, the medical vocabulary in Jaemulbo was broadly investigated and analyzed and the following claims are made: 1. Jaemulbo provides a wealth of information on the medical terminology used in the 19th century. 2. The selection of medical vocabulary included was made according to the purpose of tools such as cultured books and dictionaries. 3. Jaemulbo is an example of using Jingyuequanshu (Whole book of Jingyue) before 1790. 4. Jaemulbo reflects the experience and knowledge of pharmacology after Donguibogam.
