This paper introduces the partial melting process for solder application and characterization of its possibility using off-eutectic Pb-Sn alloy. In order to show that the liquid phase in the semi-liquid state maintains the wettability as the single-phase liquid, the wetting balance test are conducted with varying temperatures and compositions. The results are then compared with the surface tension of liquid, both measured and calculated, to examine the correlation. The results from this investigation indicate that the partial melting can yield satisfactory solder joints as long as the liquid phase acquires sufficient chemical activity. At a condition where the partial melting is effective, a direct correlation between the wettability and the surface tension is found to exist. All alloys are found to show a reasonable wettability in semi-liquid state.
Although the motion of the three-phase contact line on a solid substrate has been extensively studied thus far, the understanding of the dynamics of the contact line of liquid/liquid/gas phases is far from complete. Here we deposit a drop of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on water and HFE-7100 whose free surfaces are exposed to air to observe the flow field around the contact line. By combining the shadowgraph and high-speed imaging techniques, we find that vortices are spontaneously generated at the contact line, which grow in size with time. The flow is attributed to the Marangoni stress that pulls a liquid of lower-surface tension toward a liquid surface having a higher surface tension. However, it is not still clear why the entrained lower-surface-tension liquid should whirl rapidly beneath the contact line. We also visualize the flow by the particle image velocimetry (PIV) to find out that the rotational velocity reaches the order of 1 mm/s near the free surface.
The characteristics of the flow and energy conversion in OMACON liquid-metal MHD system are investigated. Numerical simulation of two-phase flow in the OMACON system without magnetic field was carried out by the Phoenics code and the energy conversion characteristics are studied in association with the fact that the mechanical energy loss at the nozzle of the OMACON system are to be converted into electrical energy. In this system, working fluid (gas) is injected through the mixer located at the bottom of the riser, and is mixed with hot liquid metal. Therefore in the riser two-phase flow is developed under the influence of the gravity. In this study, the interaction between the gas and liquid is considered by the use of IPSA(InterPhase Slip Algorithm) where standard drag coefficient has been used. It has been assumed that in the flow regime the liquid is continuous and the gas is dispersed. For the liquid and gas, the continuity equations, momentum equations and energy equations are solved respectively in association with void fraction in the flow field. In order to calculate the energy conversion efficiency, firstly the ratio of the mechanical energy loss of liquid metal flow at the nozzle to the input thermal energy is considered. Secondly flow pattern of liquid metal in the generator has been analyzed, and the characteristics of the conversion of the mechanical energy into the electrical energy has been investigated. For an representative case where Hartmann number is 540 and magnetic field is 0.35 T, the present analysis shows that the energy conversion efficiency is 0.653. This result is considered to be reasonable in comparison with published experimental results.
Bio-liquid is a liquid by-product of the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) reaction, converting wet biomass into solid hydrochar, bio-liquid, and bio-gas. Since bio-liquid contains various compounds, it requires efficient sampling method to extract the target compounds from bio-liquid. In this research, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) in bio-liquid was extracted based on hollow fiber supported liquid phase microextraction (HF-LPME) and determined by Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). The well-known major components of biodiesel, including methyl myristate, palmitate, methyl palmitoleate, methyl stearate, methyl oleate, and methyl linoleate had been selected as standard materials for FAME analysis using HF-LPME. Physicochemical properties of bio-liquid was measured that the acidity was 3.30 (${\pm}0.01$) and the moisture content was 100.84 (${\pm}3.02$)%. The optimization of HF-LPME method had been investigated by varying the experimental parameters such as extraction solvent, extraction time, stirring speed, and the length of HF at the fixed concentration of NaCl salt. As a result, optimal conditions of HF-LPME for FAMEs were; n-octanol for extraction solvent, 30 min for extraction time, 1200 rpm for stirring speed, 20 mm for the HF length, and 0.5 w/v% for the concentration of NaCl. Validation of HF-LPME was performed with limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), dynamic range, reproducibility, and recovery. The results obtained from this study indicated that HF-LPME was suitable for the preconcentration method and the quantitative analysis to characterize FAMEs in bio-liquid generated from food waste via HTC reaction.
A level-set (LS) method is presented for computation of boiling phenomena which involve liquid-vapor interfaces that evolve, merge and break up in time, the flow and temperature fields influenced by the interfacial motion, and the microlayer that forms between the solid and the vapor phase near the wall. The LS formulation for tracking the phase interfaces is modified to include the effects of phase change on the liquid-vapor interface and contact angle on the liquid-vapor-solid interline. The LS method can calculate an interface curvature accurately by using a smooth distance function. Also, it is straightforward to implement for two-phase flows in complex geometries. The numerical method is applied for analysis of nucleate boiling on a horizontal surface and film boiling on a horizontal cylinder.
The structure formation by liquid-liquid(L-L) phase separation coupled with crystallization in isotactic polypropylene(i-PP). solutioos was investigated by a temperature jump experiment. A series of dialkyl phthalates with a different number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain was used to control the interaction between polymer and solvent. Various thermal quench conditions were applied to the i-PP solutions to control systematically L-L phase separation and crystallization. A slow crystallizatina elongates the liquid droplets in the radial direction of a spherulite. A rapid crystallization under the deep quench locks-in the growth of L-L phase separation. These results indicate that the extent of L-L phase separation which exists below melting point can be successfully controlled through the proper selection of solvent and thermal conditions.
In this paper, we present the exact Riemann solver for the compressible liquid-gas two-phase shock tube problems. We hereby consider both isentropic and non-isentropic two-phase flows. The shock tube has a diaphragm in the mid-section which separates the liquid medium on the left and the gas medium on the right. By rupturing the diaphragm, various waves are observed on the phasic field variables such as pressure, density, temperature and void fraction in the form of rarefaction wave, shock wave and material interface (contact discontinuity). Both phases are treated as compressible fluids using the linearized equation of state or the stiffened-gas equation of state. We solve several shock tube problems made of a high/low pressure in the liquid and a low/high pressure in the gas. The wave propagations are well resolved by the exact Riemann solutions.
Molecular dynamics simulation studies for thermotropic liquid crystalline systems conposed of rodlike molecules with 6 Lennard-Jones interaction sites wre performed in NPT ensemble. Within the range of temperature studied, the system exhibited isotropic and smectic phase. For the characterization of the smectic phase, we examined the structure of the liquid crystalline phase via the radial distribution function, its longitudinal and transverse components to the director, and other orientational correlation function, its longitudinal and transverse components to the director, and other orientational correlation functions. In the smectic A phase, our results showed a large anisotropy in translational motion (i.e.,$D_⊥ >> D_∥$), and the decay of the collective orientational correlation function of rank two became slower than that of the single particle orientational correlation function of rank one. Comments on the spontaneous growth of orientational order directly from the isotropic phase are given.
In this work, transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of Ni-Cr heat resisted cast alloy (HP) was investigated. And also the behaviors of the solid particles distributed in the interlayer during TLP bonding were investigated. The MBF-60 and solid particles (Ni, Fe, and $Al_2O_3$ powders respectively) added MBF-60 which will be a liquid phase coexisting with solid particles at the bonding temperature were used as insert metal. The effective and sound bonding was possible by spark plasma sinter-bonding due to the differences of electric resistance between base metal and liquid insert layer which creates high temperature region. During the isothermal solidification, $Al_2O_3$ particles and solid particles of liquid phase sintered insert metal have shown no growth, while Ni and Fe particles grow rapidly. In this TLP bonding using the MBF-60 and distributed Fe, Ni particles as insert materials, the whole isothermal solidification process was dominated by the growth rate of the solid particles distributed in the interlayer.
