Optical Characteristics of LED Backlight and CCFL Backlight for LCD-TV Applications (LCD TV용 LED백라이트와 CCFL백라이트의 광학 특성 평가 및 비교)

  • Recently, LED(Light Emitting Diode) TV has attracted greate attention due to its super-slim form factore as well as low power consumption. LED TV is actually an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) TV in which edge-lit LED backlight is adopted. In the presente study, we report on the comparison of optical characteristics 55-inch edge-lit LED backlight and CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lam)backlight. The angular distribution of the luminance and the on-axis luminance gain on each optical component were investigated and compared. The effect of the backlight structure on the performance of the optical films was studied and discussed.

  • In this paper, a single-switch ZVZCS quasi-resonant CLL isolated DC-DC converter for driving a low-power (less than 100 W) 32'' LED backlighting liquid crystal display television (LCD TV) is proposed. The proposed converter exhibits both forward and flyback operational characteristics. All semiconductors are activated and deactivated under the soft switching conditions during the switching transition without additional active devices. The switching frequency varies less than about 10 kHz for load variations, leading to minimizing the efficiency reduction under light load. Furthermore, the low di/dt and dv/dt by soft switching enhance the electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance above 1 MHz. A theoretical analysis is described in detail, and a 72-W prototype converter verifies the validity of the analysis.

  • 본 논문에서는 Liquid crystal display (LCD) Backlight module중에 Cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL)를 포함한 인버터가 가지고 있는 기생 용량 측정 방법을 고안하였다. CCFL의 부성 저항 특성을 고려하여 램프의 정적 저항 성분을 일정하게 유지시키고 입력 전압 대 출력 전압의 비 중 최대 Gain을 갖는 주파수를 찾아내 기생 용량을 계산하는 Algorithm을 완성하였다. 시뮬레이션과 실험 결과를 통해 비교 검증함으로써 측정 방법의 유효성을 입증하였다.

  • Retardation liquid crystal films with a profiled titled optic axis (splay films) of both nematic and discotic types are used as compensation films for twisted nematic displays (TN-LCD). A new method is developed to characterize retardation vs. inclination (retardation profile) of splay films by three parameters: "full retardation" $d^{\ast}{\triangle}n$, "inplane retardation" $R_0$ and "retardation difference" $R_d$ . Splay films with the same retardation profile but with different tilt profile (retardation invariants) are discovered. Splay films with different structure parameters but belong to the same retardation invariant have the same compensation opportunities for TN-LCD.

  • Color characteristics of a dark state in the IPS-mode depending on viewing direction have been studied. IPS-mode is having a little variation of $d{\Delta}n$ with viewing angle since the LC rotates in plane. However, this mode shows asymmetric light leakage and color characteristics with viewing angle in a dark state. This drawback can be overcome by optimized retardation value of TAC film, pre-tilt angle & $d{\Delta}n$ of LC.

  • A light-guide is one of several important components of backlight unit in TFT-LCD. The manufacturing technology and optical system design of the light guide is very sensitive to quality and cost of the TFT-LCD module. In the present study a new manufacturing method which is called as direct surface forming(DSF) has been tested under various conditions. DSF is very similar to the well-known hot embossing except for partial contact between mold and substrate. The final V-groove pattern shows different shapes depend on the temperature of mold surface, contact time of mold and depth of V-groove.

  • Effects of carbon nanotube (CNT) on the in-plain switching (IPS) and fringe-field switching (FFS) modes were investigated. The studies show that the CNT-doped LC cells exhibit lower transmittance but faster response time than those in the pure LC cell. Interestingly, the CNT-doped IPS and FFS modes show different characteristic in effects of operating voltage.

  • CCFL(cold cathode fluorescent lamp) are used to backlight of LCD(liquid crystal display). CCFL dimming methods are used to pulse frequency modulation(PFM) or pulse width modulation(PWM). In this paper, design of CCFL driving and control circuit by half-bridge type series and parallel resonant inverter that variable frequency modulation method to control the output voltage current. Inverter switching frequency is higher than resonant frequency for stable operating, and it is possible dimming control. On the basis of equivalent circuit, the validity of this study is confirmed by the comparison of simulation and experimental result.

  • 본 논문에서는 PC용 투선 입체 영상 재생 장치의 원리를 제안하고 설계 및 구현하였다. 무선 LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) 셔터 고글은 적외선 방식을 이용하였다. 본 장비는 유선 장비에 비교하여 자유로운 활동을 보장하며 다수의 사용자가 별도 추가장비 없이 입체 영상을 감상할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 입체 영상 원리, 입체 영상 재생 모드, 투선 LCD 셔터 고글 동작을 논하였다. 무선 LCD 모니터용 입체 영상 재생 장치의 필요성과 향후 연구 방향을 제시하였다.
