  • We investigated the EO performances of the UV aligned twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TN-LCD) with the UV exposure on a-C:H thin film surface. LC alignment using UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the UV aligned TN-LCD can be observed. An good EO characteristics of the UV aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique ion beam exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface. Therefore, the EO property of the UV-aligned TN-LCD with UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface is almost the same as that of the rubbing-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface.

  • In conventional liquid crystal display(LCD) manufacturing process, Indium Tin Oxide(ITO) as transparent electrode and rubbing process of polyimide as alignment layer are essential process to apply electric field and align liquid crystal molecules. However, there are some limits that deposition of ITO requires high vacuum state, and rubbing process might damage the device with tribolectric discharge. In this paper, we made nanocomposite with PEDOT:PSS and MWNT to replace ITO and constructed alignment layer by nano imprint lithography with nano wrinkle pattern, to replace rubbing process. These replacement made that only one PEDOT:PSS/MWNT film can function as two layers of ITO and polyimide alignment layer, which means simplification of process. Transferred nano wrinkle patterns functioned well as alignment layer, and we found out lowered threshold voltage and shortened response time as MWNT content increase, which is related to increment of electric conductivity of the film. Through this study, it may able to contribute to process simplification, reducing process cost, and suggesting a solution to disadvantage of rubbing process.

  • It is known that AC electric field to drive IPS mode of liquid crystal display (LCD) causes reduction of the contrast after long period of display operation. Our results are presented in this paper on a base of a model of interaction between surface of PI alignment film and LC molecules. We conclude that the surface viscosity of PI alignment film is one of the most important factors for the contrast reduction phenomenon.

  • LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) commonly used as an output device has a drawback of slow response time compared with CRT display. This drawback causes motion blur especially when an abrupt intensity change occurs in an image sequence as time goes on. To overcome the problem of slow response time overdriving technique has been used in TCON of LCD. In this technique, the previous frame data has to be compressed and stored in an external memory. Considering both chip size of TCON and computational complexity, AM-BTC has been applied to the 8bit HD display driver. However, the conventional method is not suitable for 10 bit Full HD because 10 bit Full HD data is much larger than that of 8 bit HD data. Being applied to 10 bit Full HD display driver, the conventional method increase cost by enlarging the external memory size of TCON or deteriorates image quality. In this paper, we propose dual BTC image coding technique for Full HD display driver that is an adaptive coding scheme according to morphological information of each sample block. Through experiments, it is verified that the proposed Dual BTC method performs better than the conventional method not only quantitatively but also qualitatively.

  • A UV-cured adhesive with a low $T_g$ below the room temperature was used as a substrate for manufacturing a film-like liquid crystal display. This film-like LCD shows a fully flexibility due to the low $T_g$ property, and the manufacture processes are roll-to-roll compatible due to the coating processes.

  • So far, monostable and bistable LCD modes have independently been researched and developed. We introduce a novel liquid crystal display device that and be operated ad memory mode ad well ad dynamic mode. This device has a unique texture of splay, ${\pi}$ twist and bend states with applied voltages and is operated as a memory mode or dynamic mode by selective switching of two states among them. We also demonstrate electro-optical characteristics of the transmissive dual mode.

  • We propose new fabrication methods of a pixel-isolated liquid crystal (LC) structure for flexible display applications. In the LC structure fabricated through the proposed method, the patterned interpixel walls for sustaining the cell thickness are supported by the solidified polymer layer through anisotropic phase separation of LC/polymer composite, causing the alignment of the LC molecules to have very good mechanical stability against external pressure. In addition, we show that such pixel-isolating walls can be made by the stamping method which can be applied to fabricate large size plastic LCDs by roll-to-roll processing.

  • We have studied the influence of rubbing angles with respect to in-plane field direction on electro-optic characteristics of in-plane switching (IPS) liquid crystal display. The results show that the threshold voltage increases and the operational voltage decreases as the rubbing angle increases. Further, the total response time and also response times associated with grey-to-grey transitions become fast as the rubbing angle decreases.

  • The modeling for the cell gap process characteristic on the flexible liquid crystal display (LCD) process was investigated by response surface methodology (RSM). D-optimal design is carried out to build the design matrix. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was used to analyze the significance level. The statistical analysis was used to verify the response surface model. The desirability function was used in the design-space optimization.
