  • The objective of this investigation was to separate silicon and silica for recycling by the liquid-liquid separation technique. In the preparation of silicon (Si) single crystal, a small amount of silicon is fixed on the surface of silica (quartz, $SiO_2$) crucible. The used crucible is crushed for recycling both silicon and silica in a high purity from the mixed powder. Zeta-potential of silicon and silica are almost the same at pH higher than 3. Their separation by simple flotation is ruled out. However, their hydrophobic characteristics are different in several different organic solvent from the measurement of contact angle. Therefore, the liquid-liquid extraction is employed to separate silicon and silica. The result indicates that the organic solvent mixed with dodecyl ammonium acetate could extracted the silicon powder at high purity (97-100%) with high recovery from the silica powder in the water phase.

  • In this study, the effect of standard phase difference in calibration of carbonyl compounds (CC) was evaluated by using their standards prepared in both gaseous and liquid phase. For this analysis, standards in both phases were prepared for 6 different CCs (formaldehyde (FA), acetaldehyde (AA), propionaldehyde (PA), butyraldehyde (BA), isovaleraldehyde (IA) and valeraldehyde (VA)) at similar concentration levels. Their gaseous standard was calibrated after derivatization with three types of DNPH cartridge, and their calibration results were compared against liquid-phase standards. Although there was a strong compatibility between 2 phases for CCs with lower molecular weights (e.g., formaldehyde and acetaldehyde), it was not the case for the heavier CCs. The results of our analysis indicate that the analytical bias of the heavier CCs can be significantly large (by more than a few tens of %). As a result, underestimation of hevier CCs can be significant, if their gaseous samples are quantified by liquid phase standard.

  • The present study used the liquid extraction pretreatment method and developed a liquid chromatographyultraviolet detector (LC-UV) for the simultaneous determination of 14 sulfonamides (SAs) residues in porcine and chicken muscle. Linearity within a range of $50-150\;{\mu}g/kg$ was obtained with the correlation coefficient ($r^2$) of 0.9673-0.9997. The mean recovery of SAs was 55.9-109.7% (relative standard deviations; RSDs 1.7-17.3%) in porcine muscle and 52.8-112.4% (RSDs 2.3-16.9%) in chicken muscle. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were 2-32 and $7-96\;{\mu}g/kg$ in porcine muscle, and 4-32 and $13-97\;{\mu}g/kg$ in chicken muscle, respectively. These values were lower than the maximum residue limits (MRLs) established by the European Union. The sum of all SAs residues present should be less than $100\;{\mu}g/kg$.

  • This study is a thermal and flow analysis of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) pipe line for 250 kW grade waste gas heat recovery. We attempted to obtain the boundary condition data through the process design of the ORC, which can produce an electric power of 250 kW through the recovery of waste heat. Then, we conducted a simulation by using STAR-CCM+ to verify the model for the pipe line stream of the 250 kW class waste heat recovery system. Based on the results of the thermal and flow analyses of each pipe line applied to the ORC system, we gained the following conclusion. The pressure was relatively increased at the pipe outside the refracted part due to the pipe shape. Moreover, the heat transfer amount of the refrigerant gas line is relatively higher than that of the liquid line.

  • To limit fault current in a power system, superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) using high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils have been developed by many research groups so far. Non-inductive winding of HTS coils used for SFCLs can be classified into solenoid winding and pancake winding. Each of winding is expected to have different quench and recovery characteristics because the structure of solenoid winding differs from pancake winding's. Therefore it is important to the SFCLs application to investigate characteristics of each winding. In this paper, we deal with quench and recovery characteristics of four kinds of winding : solenoid winding, pancake winding without spacers, and with spacers of 2 and 4 mm thickness. In order to obtain quench and recovery parameters of coils, short circuit tests were performed in liquid nitrogen.

  • A mathematical model for the synergistic interaction of physical and chemical environmental agents was suggested for quantitative prediction of irreversibly damaged cells after combined exposures. The model took into account the synergistic interaction of agents and was based on the supposition that additional effective damages responsible for the synergy are irreversible and originated from an interaction of ineffective sublesions. The experimental results regarding the irreversible component of radiation damage of diploid yeast cells simultaneous exposed to heat with ionizing radiation ($^{60}Co$) or UV light (254 nm) are presented. It was shown that the cell ability of the liquid holding recovery decreased with an increase in the temperature, at which the exposure was occurred. A good correspondence between experimental results and model prediction was demonstrated. The importance of the results obtained for the interpretation of the mechanism of synergistic interaction of various environmental factors is discussed.

  • An Experimental study was carried out to develop a simple method of processing copper waste sludge which is produced by PBC manufacturing. The procedure is based on leaching of wet sludge in 2N H$_2$SO$_4$, and the solid / liquid ratio is controlled approximately at 1/10. The recovery of copper is 85.4%, and pH of the leachate is 3.20. Adding ammonia solution into leachate forms ammine, and hydroxide compounds derived from other impurities in leachate at pH 10. The hydroxide compound can be treated by ferrite process, and the product is a stable oxide compound. Then the ammine solution is heated to evaporate ammonia, and the copper hydroxide is formed. Heating at 8$0^{\circ}C$by aeration, copper hydroxide is transformed into copper oxide with a purity of 98.4%. This process can recover most copper from sludge and the residue can be stabilized by the formation of a stable oxide compound which is not hazardous to environment.

  • A solid phase extraction (SPE) method was optimized for the quantitative analysis of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in serum using hydrophilic-lipophilic balance SPE and LC-MS/MS. Fetal bovine serums spiked with $^{13}C_8$-PFOA before or after SPE were used as test samples for evaluation of the SPE efficiency. Simultaneous evaluation of matrix effects and absolute SPE recovery for $^{13}C_8$-PFOA in serum using different sample pre-treatments and SPE conditions allowed optimization of SPE process efficiency with minimal matrix effect and decent SPE recovery. Introduction of protein precipitation as a sample pre-treatment procedure for serum samples before SPE generally decreased matrix effect in LC-MS/MS analysis and provided more stable recovery of PFOA.

  • This paper is a study of recovery under load process of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). SFCL consists of five parallel-connected high-temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes additionally stabilized by stainless tape. Previously, HTS was heated by current pulse to simulate a short circuit in a power grid. During the cooling period, the current amplitude decreased to 23% or less of HTS critical current value, which is the simulation of network re-switching. When HTS with a polymer coating is cooled, temperature gradient on thermal insulation layer occurs, that prevents a boiling crisis and improves the heat sink into liquid nitrogen. Two samples are coated with a 30 ㎛ and 50 ㎛ polylactide (PLA) layers, reference sample has no polymer coating on it. Samples with a polymer coating show 3-5 times faster cooling than the reference one.

  • As high temperature superconductor applications became a reality due to increase in coated conductor performance, it is important to understand their stability behavior to design safe electrical power systems. We have experimentally studied the dependence of quench and recovery characteristics of coated conductors on the amplitude of current and duration time. The sample used in the present study is stabilized with stainless steel. Stability tests of 3 cm long sample were performed in a liquid nitrogen bath cooling condition by applying a short period over current pulses for 50 and 100 ms, with amplitude up to ~ 6 times of the critical current. The transport current that follows before and after the current pulse was fixed about ~85% the critical current. We analyzed the quench recovery using the current voltage characteristic.
