  • Agricultural practice and improper waste disposal in developing regions have resulted in environmental degradation in land and waters, for which low-cost, proven solutions are needed. We demonstrate in the laboratory the applications of composting and trickling filter techniques to treat olive mill wastes that can be implemented in the West Bank and other regions of the world. To a pomace waste sample from a California mill, we amended with saw dust (wood carbon source) and baking soda ($NaHCO_3$ alkalinity) at weight ratios of waste/wood/$NaHCO_3$ at 70:27:1 and composted it for periods of 11 and 48 days; the compost was used as an additive to potting soil for transplanting. The pomace sample was also blended into slurry and introduced to a water-circulating pond and trickling filter system (P/TF) to examine any inhibitive effect of the pomace on biological removal of the organic waste. The results showed the compost-amended potting soil supported plant growth without noticeable stress over 34 days and the P/TF system removed BOD and COD by >90% from the waste liquid within 2 days, with a first-order rate constant of 1.9 $d^{-1}$ in the pond. An onsite treatment design is proposed that promises implementation for agricultural waste disposal in developing regions.

  • This work was performed to find the effect of operation parameters on the permeate flux through the activated sludge dynamic layer, and to indicate the relationship between the water quality of supernatant and flux based on the results. Since the effluent can be obtained through steady and stable formation of cake layer in the bio-filter media system, it is an important subject to keep and control microbes with activated state in the bio-reactor. Filtration resistance was drastically increased at more than 18000mg/L of MLSS. With filtration time continued, the flux was gradually decreased and the water qualities of supernatant monitored by turbidity and TOC were also deteriorated. This phenomenon indicated that the organic materials generated by microbes and accumulated in the reactor might affect the flux in the system. In addition, the decrease of flux was simultaneously observed in the sludge volume index. When SVI was controlled from 150 to 250, the flux was also decreased. The proper aeration time was recommended to 30 to 60 seconds in this system. In order to operate this system steadily, therefore, the control of water quality of supernatant and SVI should be proceeded.

  • Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the filtration efficiency, inhalation resistance, and liquid resistance of commercial reusable masks in comparison to the performance of KF-AD masks (reference masks). Methods: Thirty-six masks were purchased from an online market. Filtration efficiency and inhalation resistance were determined in the same manner as in MFDS certification testing, respectively using TIL/IL & Filter Test 1300S (SFP Services, UK) and Breathing Resistance Analyzer DA2001 (Lambda Ray, South Korea). Results: Most of the filtration efficiencies found for the 19 masks were far lower than the test standard for KF-certified masks. Four masks met KF94 and three masks even met KF80. Most inhalation resistances were also much lower than the standard, with many almost one-half of the standard. In addition, all the masks except KF-AD masks did not pass the liquid resistance test. Conclusions: Although most of the filtration efficiency performance results found in this study for the reusable masks, which emerged as an alternative, were lower than the standard for health masks, multi-use masks can be used with a replacement filter inserted.

  • The study deals with the effects of parameters in the synthesis of carbon nanotubes in liquid nitrogen to find the most appropriate conditions such as electrical voltage and time that give carbon nanotubes with large volume and less proportion of impurity, which is a non-nanotubed carbon. The experiment employed the method of arc-discharge between graphite cathode and anode which are immersed in liquid nitrogen. The electrical DC current of 60A and 70A were applied with the time period ranging from 10 seconds to 25 seconds. It was found that the electrical current of 60A and 13 seconds arc-discharge time allowed the largest volume of carbon nanotubes generation. The longer time leads to more impurities around the carbon nanotubes. By the filtration of CNTs-suspended solution using 0.2 micrometers porous paper filter and the characterization using TEM, the carbon nanotubes synthesized in the study were approximately 25 layers multi-walled nanotubes with the average diameter of 18.2 nanometers.

  • In this study, we present a fully automated system that combines camera technology with liquid crystal technology to create a polarization camera capable of detecting the partial linear polarization of light reflected from an object. The use of twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystals that electro-optically modulate the polarization plane of light eliminates the need to mechanically rotate the polarizing filter in front of the camera lens. Images obtained using these techniques are imaged by computer software. In addition, liquid crystal panels have been produced in a square shape, but many camera lenses are usually round, and lighting or other driving units are installed around the lens, so space is optimized through the application of a circular liquid crystal display. Through the development of this technology, an electrically switchable and space-optimized liquid crystal polarizer is developed.

  • A tunable reduced-order distillation model is proposed for real-time applications. To develop the model, a binary distillation column with MaCabe-Thiele assumptions was considered first and then the governing equations for the column were reduced to a simplified vector differential equations using the collocation method combined with cubic spline interpolation function. The final reduced-order model has four tuning parameters, relative volatilities and liquid holdups for rectifying and stripping sections, respectively. To assess the applicability of the developed model, the real-time adjustment of the model was tried by recursively updating the tuning parameters using the BKF algorithm. As a result, it was found that the reduced-model follows the simulated distillation process very closely as the parameters are improved.

  • In this paper, we proposed pre-filter algorithms which using frequency domain analysis method, for the detections of defects in large-sized Thin Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Display(TFT-LCD) panel surfaces. We performed frequency analysis with 1-D, 2-D FFT methods for extract periodic patterns of lattice structures in TFT-LCDs. To remove this patterns, band-stop filters were used for eliminating specific frequency components. In order to acquire only defected images, we used 2-D inverse FFT methods which can be reverts images that remains defects.

  • A novel two-phase PIV algorithm using a single camera has been proposed, which introduces a method of image-separation into respective phase images, and is applied to freely rising single bubble. Gas bubble, tracer particle and background each have different gray intensity ranges on the same image frame when reflection and dispersion in the phase interface are intrinsically eliminated by optical filters and fluorescent material. Further, the signals of the two phases do not interfere with each other. Gas phase velocities are obtained from the separated bubble image by applying the two-frame PTV. On the other hand, liquid phase velocities are obtained from the tracer particle image by applying the cross-correlation algorithm. Moreover, in order to increase the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of the cross-correlation of tracer particle image, image enhancement is employed.

  • Emergency generators normally use diesel engines. The generators need to conduct weekly no-load operation inspections to ensure stable performance at emergency situations. In particular, the generators with large diesel engines mainly use rectangle type filter substrates. In order to minimize hazardous emissions generated by generators, optimizing the reduction efficiency through CFD analysis of flow characteristics of PM/NOX reduction system is important. In this study, we analyzed internal flow by CFD, which is difficult to confirm by experimental method. The main factors in our numerical study are the changes of flow uniformity and back pressure. Therefore, changes in flow characteristics were studied according to urea injector locations, selective catalyst reduction (SCR) diffuser angle, and filter porosity.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a mechanistically based mathematical model that would consider the interdependence of VOCs transport, microbial activity, and sorptive interactions in a moist, unsaturated soil. Because the focus of the model was on description of natural attenuation, the advective VOCs transport that is induced in engineered remediation processes such as vapor extraction was not considered. The utility of the model was assessed through its ability to describe experimental observations from diffusion experiments using toluene as a representative VOCs in well-defined soil columns that contained a toluene degrading bacterium, Pseudomonas putida G7 md Fl, as the sole active microbial species. The gas-liquid mass-transfer was found to be a key parameter controlling the ability of bacteria to degrade VOCs. This finding indicates that soil size and geometry are likely to be important parameters in assessing the possible success of natural attenuation of VOCs in contaminated unsaturated soils. Therefore we found that Pseudomonas putida G7 and Fl were very effective to remove of refractory pollutants such as toluene in soil by Bio-filter
