  • It is recognized that alternative fuel such as dimethyl ether (DME) has better combustion polluting characteristics than diesel fuel, even though the cetane number of DME is almost the same as that of diesel. Characteristics of DME spray were observed experimentally under various ambient conditions using a constant volume chamber and a common-rail injection system. N-dodecane and LPG fuel sprays were also observed under same conditions of DME spray. Using spray images from backlight scattering and Mie scattering, characteristics of fuel sprays such as penetration and spray volume were visualized and quantitatively measured. The measurements showed that the penetration of early period decreased remarkably, because evaporation of alternative fuels became prosperous by the influence of flash boiling phenomenon under the condition of the low temperature and pressure compared with n-dodecane. The penetration of DME and LPG spray received the influence of temperature more largely in comparison with low density, because the specific surface area increased by atomizing in high density.

  • In this study, Al2O3 and H-ZSM-5 were coated on the inner wall of the stainless steel tube for the stable use of liquid hydrocarbon fuel and an endothermic catalyst used as coolant for hypersonic flying vehicles. Coke production is inevitable by the endothermic decomposition reaction of the liquid hydrocarbon fuel, and Fe, Ni metals induce the production of the filamentous coke by using a stainless steel tube reactor as a cooling channel. By coating the stainless steel with H-ZSM-5, Fe and Ni metals are prevented from being directly exposed to the liquid hydrocarbon fuel, and the formation of the filamentous coke is inhibited. In addition, Al2O3 is coated between the stainless steel and H-ZSM-5 to enhance adhesion bond strength.

  • Researches on hypersonic aircraft technologies have been carried out to increase flight speeds. However, increase in flight speeds causes heat loads that could lead structural change of aircraft's component. Researches on cooling technologies using endothermic fuels are progressing in the USA, France and Russia to treat the heat loads. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. In this study, methylcyclohexane, n-octane, and n-dodecane were selected as model endothermic fuels and experiments in endothermic properties were implemented. Experimental conditions were supercritical condition of each model fuels in which actual endothermic fuels were exposed. The object of this study is to identify endothermic properties of the model endothermic fuels and to predict endothermic properties of actual fuels such as kerosene fuels.

  • We have used a novel liquid surface forces apparatus to determine the variation of disjoining pressure with film thickness for dodecane-water-dodecane emulsion films. The LSFA allows measurement of film thicknesses in the range 5-100 nm and disjoining pressure from 0-1500 Pa. Disjoining pressure isotherms are given for films stabilised by the nonionic surfactnat n-dodecyl pentaoxyethylene glycol ether$(C_{12}E_5)$ and n-decyl-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside($C_{10}- $\beta$-Glu)$ and the anionic surfactant sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulphosuccinate(AOT) in the presense of added electrolyte. For $C_{12}E_5$ and AOT, the emulsion films are indefinitely stable even for the highest concentration of NaCl tested (136.7 Nm) whereas the $C_{10}-{eta}-Glu$ film shows coalescence at this salt concentration. For film thicknesses greater than approximately 20 nm with all three surfactants, the disjoining pressure isotherms are reasonably well described in terms of electrostatic and van der Waals, forces. For the nonionic surfactant emulsion films, the charge properties of the monolayers are qualitatively similar to those seen for foam films. For AOT emulsion films, the monolayer surface potentials estimated by fitting the isotherms are similar to the values of the zeta potential measured for AOT stabilised emulsion droplets. For thin emulsion films certain systems showed isotherms which suggested the presence of an additional repulsive force with a range of approximately 20 nm.

  • The present paper deals with the liquid-liquid extraction and flat sheet supported liquid membrane studies of Pd(II) separation from nitric acid medium using a novel synthesized ligand, namely, N,N,N',N'-tetraethyl-2,2-thiodiethanthiodiglycolamide (TETEDGA). The effect of various diluents and stripping reagents on the extraction of Pd(II) was studied. The liquid-liquid extraction studies showed complete extraction of Pd(II) in ~ 5 min. The influence of nitric acid and TETEDGA concentration on the distribution of Pd(II) has been investigated. The increase in nitric acid concentration resulted in increase in extraction of Pd(II). Stoichiometry of the extracted species was found to be $Pd(NO_3)_2{\cdot}TETEDGA$ by slope analysis method. Extraction studies with SSCD solution showed negligible uptake of Pt, Cr, Ni, and Fe, thus showing very high selectivity and extractability of TETEDGA for Pd(II). The flat sheet supported liquid membrane studies showed quantitative transport of Pd(II), ~99%, from the feed ($3M\;HNO_3$) to the strippant (0.02 M thiourea diluted in $0.4M\;HNO_3$) using 0.01 M TETEDGA as a carrier diluted in n-dodecane. Extraction time was ~160 min. Parameters such as feed acidity, TETEDGA concentration in membrane phase, membrane porosity etc. were optimized to achieve maximum transport rate. Permeability coefficient value of $2.66{\times}10^{-3}cm/s$ was observed using TETEDGA (0.01 M) as carrier, at 3 M, $HNO_3$ feed acidity across $0.2{\mu}m$ PTFE as membrane. The membrane was found to be stable over five runs of the operation.

  • This paper presents experimental observation of asymmetric electrohydrodynamic flow generated around a pair of symmetric coplanar electrodes. Electrodes are attached on the bottom of the cavity containing a dielectric liquid, i.e., a mixture of dodecane and 0.5% wt Span80. In the first experiment, an AC voltage of 1500 V is applied with the frequency varying in the range 10~500 hz and the left electrode being grounded. The flow patterns show that the center line of vortices is unexpectedly tilted to the left side. If the right side electrode is grounded, the center line is tilted to the right side. The magnitude of the fluid velocity shows an irregular variation with the frequency in the range 10 Hz~100 Hz, beyond which it simply decays. In the second experiment, we applied fixed AC with 1000 V and 60 Hz superposed by DC voltage varying in the range -1000 V ~ +1000 V. The center line of the flow pattern is tilted to the right side with positive DC voltage and to the left side with negative DC. We have managed to show that the flow pattern can be symmetric with a suitable combination of DC and AC, e.g., DC 850 V plus AC 1000 V with the frequency 10 Hz.

  • The extraction of lactic acid by an emulsion liquid membrane (ELM), in batch and continuous mode, has been reported. On the basis of preliminary experiments, the optimum composition of the organic phase (membrane) is determined. When the SPan 80 is used as surfactant, the emulsion breakage exceeds 50%, but only 10% is obtained when the ECA4360 is used. The effects of surfactant, carrier and solute concentrations, phase volume ratio, and stirring speed on the extraction yield were examined and optimized. Surfactant, carrier and diluent used were ECA4360, trilaurylamine (TLA) and dodecane, respectively; 2-ethylhexane-1,3-diol (EHD) is used as a co-surfactant. Under optimal conditions, emulsion breaking is very low and the swelling is kept at its lowest level. Under the pH conditions of fermentation medium, the extraction yield is lower. A mixer-settler continuous system was used for testing these conditions. The residence time, the number of extraction stages and the stability of the emulsion were studied and optimized. The extraction yield obtained exceeds 90%.

  • Equilibrium data of the mixture is essential in the design and operation of separation equipment such as distillation or extraction in chemical processes. These equilibrium data can be obtained through experiments or by calculations using the known binary parameters and the thermodynamic models. Generally, to obtain these parameters, phase equilibrium experimental data such as gas-liquid and liquid-liquid are used. In this study, the excess enthalpy of the mixture was measured using the flow type microcalorimeter which is a simpler method than phase equilibria experiments, and the parameters of various theories were obtained by using this data. In order to investigate the relationship between carbon chain length, enthalpy and binary parameters in the alkane system, excess enthalpies for the n-hexane + alkane (n-pentane, n-heptane, n-octane and n-dodecane) were measured at 298.15 K and the banary interaction parameters of Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC were obtained from the experimental data. In addition, we wanted to obtain basic information on the interaction and association phenomena of the system including electrolyte applicable to various fields by using the excess enthalpy experimental data and the existing theory. First, we investigated the excess enthalpy for the NaOH / Water / Ethanol system as a basic experiment and examined the applicability using the electrolyte-NRTL (eNRTL) theory.

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) has recently drawn an enormous industrial interest because of its useful mechanical properties such as thermal resistance, abrasion resistance and thermal conductivity at high temperature. Especially, high purity SiC is applicable to the fields of power semiconductor and lighting emitting diode (LED). In this work, high purity carbon powders as raw material for high purity SiC were prepared by a RF induction thermal plasma. Dodecane ($C_{12}H_{26}$) as hydrocarbon liquid precursor has been utilized for synthesis of high purity carbon powders. It is found that the filtercollected carbon powders showed smaller particle size (10~20 nm) and low crystallinity compared to the reactor-collected carbon powders. The purities of reactor-collected and filter-collected carbon powders were 99.9997 % (5N7) and 99.9993 % (5N3), respectively. In addition, the impurities of carbon powders synthesized by RF induction thermal plasma were mainly originated from the surrounding environment.
