  • Liquid crystalline aromatic polyesters (LCPs) are representative examples of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers, whose structure-property relationships have been the subject of many researches. In this study, we synthesized organo-soluble liquid crystalline aromatic polyesters, and their composites with acetylene-terminated thermoset resins were prepared and characterized. Soluble LCPs were synthesized by employing 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, and 4-aminophenol as monomers via condensation polymerization based on transesterfication and transamidation. Acetylene-terminated thermoset resins were synthesized by the reaction of 4-ethynylaniline with terephthaloyl dichloride, isophthaloyl dichloride or 4,4'-biphenyldicarbonyl dichloride. We prepared the soluble LCP/thermoset composites by solution blending followed by thermal treatment. The thermal stability, thermal expansion coefficient, and dielectric properties of the composite were studied.

  • We used melt polymerization method to prepare a series of aromatic liquid crystals (LCs) based on aromatic ester and amide units with the reactive methyl-maleimide end group, and then the resulting thermally cross-linked LCs to produce LC thermoset films by means of solution casting and the followed heat treatment. The synthesized LCs and LCTs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and polarizing optical microscopy (POM) with a hot stage. All of the LCs prepared by melt polymerization method formed smectic mesophases. The thermal properties of the LC and LCT films were strongly affected by the mesogen units in the main chain structures. The thermal expansion coefficients of samples were in the range of 27.72~50.95 ppm/$^{\circ}C$.

  • We prepared a series of aromatic liquid crystals (LCs) based on wholly aromatic ester units with the reactive end group methyl maleimide by means of melt condensation method, and the resulting LCs were thermally crosslinked to produce liquid crystalline thermoset (LCT) films. The synthesized LCs and LCTs were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), and polarizing optical microscopy (POM) with a hot stage. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and coefficient of thermal expansion are strongly affected by the mesogen units in their main chain structures. The $p$-substituted biphenyl LC was found to have the highest thermal property value.

  • Epoxy resin (EP) is one of the most famous thermoset materials. In general, because EP has three-dimensional random network, it possesses thermal properties like a typical heat insulator. Recently, there has been increasing interest in controlling the network structure for making new functionality from EP. Indeed, the new modified EP represented as liquid crystalline epoxy (LCE) is spotlighted as an enabling technology for producing novel functionalities, which cannot be obtained from the conventional EPs, by replacing the random network structure to oriented one. In this paper, we review current progress in the field of LCEs and their application for the highly thermal conductive composite materials.
