Characteristics of holdup and flow behavior of fluidized solid particles were investigated in a liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed ($0.102m{\times}3.5m$). Effects of liquid velocity ($U_L$), particle size ($d_P$) and solid circulation rate ($G_S$) on the solid holdup, overall particle rising velocity, slip velocity between liquid and particles and hydrodynamic energy dissipation rate in the riser were examined. The particle holdup increased with increasing $d_P$ or $G_S$ but decreased with increasing $U_L$. The overall particle rising velocity increased with increasing $U_L$ or $G_S$ but decreased with increasing $d_P$. The slip velocity increased with increasing $U_L$ or $d_P$ but did not change considerably with $G_S$. The energy dissipation rate, which was found to be closely related to the contacting frequency of micro eddies, increased with increasing $d_P$, $G_S$ or $U_L$. The solid particle holdup was well correlated with operating variables such as $U_L$, $d_P$ and $G_S$.

In the present study, a PIV measurement and image processing technique were applied in order to investigate the flow characteristics in the gas injected liquid bath. The circulation of liquid was induced by upward bubble flow. Due to the centrifugal force, the flow was well developed near both wall sides than in the center of a bath. The vortex flow irregularly repeated generation and disappearance which helped to accelerate the mixing process. The bubble rise velocity in the bottom region was relatively lower than in the upper region because the energy generated by bubbles' behavior in the region near the nozzle was almost converted into kinetic energy But bubble rise velocity increases with the increase of the axial distance since kinetic energy of rising bubbles is added to buoyancy force. In conclusion, the flow increased bubble rise velocity and the flow of the bottom region became more active.
In the present study, the gas injection system based on air-water model was designed to investigate the behavior characteristics of bubbles injected into a ladle. The parameters such as gas volume fraction and bubble rise velocity were exprementally measured in a gas-liquid flow region. To measure gas volume fraction, an electo-conductivity probe was used and bubble rise velocity was obtained by a high speed CCD camera. Gas volume fraction was symmetric to the axis of nozzle secured on the bottom of a ladle. The bubble rise velocity was calculated for two different experimental conditions. That is, gas flow conditions were following two case: 1) Q = $0.63{\times}10^{-4}$$m^{3}/s$, 2) $1.26{\times}10^{-4}$$m^{3}/s$. As a gas injected into the liquid ladle, the liquid-phase region is circulated by bubbles' behavior. The bubble rise velocity was influenced of the circulation flow of liquid phase. As a result, the bubble rise velocity was appeared higher middle region of ladle than near the nozzle.
Low-frequency pressure fluctuations in an external-loop airlift reactor were investigated. Low-frequency pressure fluctuations could be measured by shooting videos about liquid levels in the four piezometric tubes which were installed at the lower and upper parts of the riser and downcomer using a cellular phone. The periodic characteristics of pressure fluctuations were proved by the calculation of their auto-correlation function and cross-correlation function. Even if the riser superficial gas velocity was constant, the riser and downcomer gas holdups as well as wall pressures were periodically changed due to the inertia of circulating liquid. In general, the intensity of pressure fluctuations increased with an increase in the gas velocity. When the unaerated liquid height was 0.04 m, the maximum period of pressure fluctuations was found at the specific gas velocity (0.14 ms-1). It was because the maximum inertia of circulating liquid resulted from a reduction in the increasing rate of the liquid circulation velocity and a decrease in the volume of the effectively circulating liquid with an increase in the gas velocity.

The vaporization characteristics of a liquid heptane droplet in a supercritical nitrogen flow is numerically analyzed. The present model can account for real gas effects, liquid-phase internal circulation, variable thermodynamic properties and high-pressure effects. Time marching method with preconditioning scheme is employed to handle the low Mach number flows in dense heptane droplet region. Computations are made for the wide range of convective velocity and ambient pressure. Numerical results indicate that the droplet deformation becomes stronger by increasing the Reynolds number and it becomes relatively weak by increasing the pressure.

The hydrodynamics and the liquid flow characteristics were investigated in an internal circulation airlift reactor with a single nozzle as a gas distributor. In an air-water system, the gas holdup in the individual flow zone and the impulse-response curve of tracer were measured at various gas velocities and reactor heights. Experimental results showed that for the higher gas velocity(>about 8 cm/s), the flow behavior of bubbles in the riser was turbulent flow due to strong bubble coalescences and the axial height of dispersion zone of large bubbles having uniform sizes in the downcomer was decreased with increasing gas velocity. And mean gas holdups in the individual flow zone and the reactor were increased with increasing gas velocities and were decreased with increasing heights of the top section of the reactor and it was decreased with increasing the height of the top section and gas velocity. Flow characteristics of liquid in the riser and the downcomer was tend to access to plug flow and the overall flow behavior of liquid was mainly varied with the size of the top section which it was assumed to be perfect mixing zone. In these conditions, liquid circulation velocities were increased with increasing gas velocities and they were higher than those by using other gas distributors.

The experimental study on the shape and behavior of bubbles in U-tube deep shaft of 32m has been performed. According to the results in this paper, the equivalent spherical diameter of bubbles was 0.422-0.722cm and the shape of bubbles was almost ellipsoidal for bubbles to be generated ta single-orifice of diameter 0.06cm in the downcomer of the deep shaft system. Gas hold-up and gas-liquid contact area of bubbles in the deep shaft was decreased in accordance with depth, Also downcomer velocity of bubbles was slower than circulation velocity of liquid and riser velocity of bubbles was fast than circulation velocity. The bubble-size-distribution of bubbles in the deep shaft was the logarithmic probability distribution. The number of bubbles in the deep shaft was decreased in accordance with depth and the number of bubbles in the downcomer is more than the bubbles in the riser.

Recently high speed mixer, which is mixing, grinding, dispersion for liquid-liquid material, has been widely used several industries such as food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, electronic material. This high speed mixer has a core element part called particle separation device. Particle separation device, which makes mixed liquid and liquid material using shear forces from a rotor and a stator, is a decisive factor in the distributed parts. In this study, we examined the velocity distribution of the two models of particle separation device using computation fluid dynamics, so that we were able to see the difference of the velocity distribution according to the shape. Also, by experiment, we observed that the use of rotor-screen type is deemed more suitable in case of accurately considering the effect of improving of the dispersibility through the circulation of the future.

Experimental investigations of the flow structure and heat transfer enhancement in a channel with a built-in circular cylinder and a wing-let type vortex generator are presented. Without any vortex generators, relatively low heat transfer takes place in the downstream of the circular cylinder where is a recirculation region with low velocity fluid is formed. However with a wing-let type longitudinal vortex generator in the wake region behind the cylinder, heat transfer in the region can be enhanced. In order to control the strength of longitudinal vortices, the angle of attack of the vortex generators is varied from $20^{circ} to 45^{\circ}$, but spacings between the vortex generations are fixed to be 5 mm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity field downstream of the vortex generator is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. The vorticity field and streamwise velocity contour are obtained from the velocity field. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the experimental cases($\beta=20^{circ}, 30^{circ} and 45^{\circ}$). Circulation strength and heat transfer coefficient have the maximum values when the angle of attack($\beta$) is $30^{\circ}$.
In order to develop a novel system named "thermal medium and gas circulation type pyrolysis system," this study was conducted to obtain basic data for process simulation before performing the pyrolysis experiment. Polypropylene (PP) was chosen as model material in the basic pyrolysis experiment instead of waste plastic and fluidized sand (hereinafter referred to as "sand"), and it was used as a heat transfer material in the "thermal medium and gas circulation type pyrolysis system." Ni was impregnated as an active catalyst on the sand to promote catalytic pyrolysis. The basic physical properties of PP were analyzed using a thermogravimetric analyzer, and pyrolysis was performed at 600 ℃ in an N2 atmosphere to produce liquid oil. The distribution of the carbon number of the liquid oil generated through the catalytic pyrolysis reaction was analyzed using GC/MS. We investigated the effects of varying the pyrolysis space velocity and catalyst amount on the yield of liquid oil and the carbon number distribution of the liquid oil. Using Ni/sand, the yield of liquid oil was increased except with the pyrolysis condition of 10 wt% Ni/sand at a space velocity of 30,000 h-1, and the composition of C6 ~ C12 hydrocarbons increased. With increases in the space velocity, higher yields of liquid oil were obtained, but the composition of C6 ~ C12 hydrocarbons was reduced. With 1 wt% Ni/sand, the oil yield obtained was greater than that obtained with 10 wt% Ni/sand. In summary, when 1 wt% Ni/sand was used at a space velocity of 10,000 h-1, the oil yield was 60.99 wt% and the composition of C6 ~ C12 hydrocarbons was highest at 42.06 area%.
