  • Venous malformation (VM) is a benign lesion of blood vessels caused by an error in vascular morphogenesis during the embryologic phase. This entity mostly affects the head and neck region, including the lips, tongue, buccal mucosa, gingiva, or palate. VM may cause functional and aesthetic impairments. The anatomical structure and shape of the lips provide an important aesthetic accent for an individual. Therefore, management of VM in the lip area without postoperative defects or scarring is challenging. In this brief communication article, we present a conservative approach to lip VM in a nine-year-old boy using a bleomycin injection that had good aesthetic and functional outcomes. Injection of 2 mL of 1/10 of 15 mg bleomycin in a saline dilution into the lip mucosa may present a drug reaction as a white plaque and reddish owl eye lesion that takes up to three weeks to resolve without a scar. It is important to recognize the characteristics and self-limiting nature of postoperative bleomycin complications to avoid unnecessary treatment.

  • The use of cold-formed steel members is increasing day by day, especially in regions where earthquake effects are intensively experienced. Among cold-formed steel members (CFS), "channel" members are used more than other crosssectional members, especially in buildings or industrial structures. In recent years, several studies have been carried out on the axial load and flexural performance of these members under monotonic loading. In this study, CFS beam-column members were cyclically and monotonically loaded under combined axial load and biaxial bending moments, and their buckling behavior, load bearing capacity, stiffness, ductility, and energy absorption capacity were determined. For this purpose, monotonic and cyclic loading experiments were carried out on 30 CFS channel members at 15 different eccentricities. Then, material properties were determined by axial monotonic tensile and very low cycle fatigue tests for use in numerical studies. From the experimental results, the buckling modes, bearing capacities, ductility, stiffness, and energy absorption capacities of the members were obtained. The characteristics of the members were compared according to the stress state of the lips. According to the data obtained from the displacement transducer placed on the lips and on the back of the web, information about the buckling mode and curvature of the members was obtained. Finally, monotonic, and cyclic loading results were compared to determine the differences in the buckling behavior of the members.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide data on the normative values of some clinically important soft tissue dimensions for adult Korean females with aesthetically beautiful facial profiles. Lateral cephalograms of 18 Korean female models, who were selected for their well balanced and aesthetic facial profiles, were evaluated. All cephalograms were taken with the subjects in a natural head position with the teeth in occlusion and the lips at rest. The means and standard deviations were determined and presented. In addition, comparisons with the previous studies were performed The results of the present study were as follows: 1. The upper and lower lips were posteriorly located in relation to the Ricketts' E line (Upper lip to E line: -2.08, Lower lip to E line: -0.04). 2. Both lips were more posteriorly located than those in the results of previous studies on Korean females selected by normal occlusion, but more anteriorly located than in the results of studies selected on an aesthetic basis. 3. The nasolabial angle for this sample was 101.03 degrees with a standard deviation of 8.47 degrees.

  • AAM(Active Appearance Model) is an algorithm to extract face feature points with statistical models of shape and texture information based on PCA(Principal Component Analysis). This method is widely used for face recognition, face modeling and expression recognition. However, the detection performance of AAM algorithm is sensitive to initial value and the AAM method has the problem that detection error is increased when an input image is quite different from training data. Especially, the algorithm shows high accuracy in case of closed lips but the detection error is increased in case of opened lips and deformed lips according to the facial expression of user. To solve these problems, we propose the improved AAM algorithm using lip feature points which is extracted based on a new lip detection algorithm. In this paper, we select a searching region based on the face feature points which are detected by AAM algorithm. And lip corner points are extracted by using Canny edge detection and histogram projection method in the selected searching region. Then, lip region is accurately detected by combining color and edge information of lip in the searching region which is adjusted based on the position of the detected lip corners. Based on that, the accuracy and processing speed of lip detection are improved. Experimental results showed that the RMS(Root Mean Square) error of the proposed method was reduced as much as 4.21 pixels compared to that only using AAM algorithm.

  • A total of 122 rabbits (40 males, 51 females, 25 castrated males and 6 spayed females; age range: 3 months to 11 years; weight range: 0.8-3.4 kg) were admitted to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University from January 2012 to February 2013. The syphilis rapid test was positive in 21.3% of rabbits, with a significant difference in the rates of positivity between male versus female rabbits and rabbits younger than 1 year versus older than 1 year of age (both p < 0.01). Skin lesions were detected around the lips (59.1%), nose (56.5%), genitalia (50.0%), anus (40.9%) and eyelids (18.2%). Coexisting skin lesions were found on the nose and lips (26.0%); anus and genitalia (21.8%); lips, anus and genitalia (17.4%) of rabbits. Twenty-two rabbits with skin lesions were subcutaneously treated with Penicillin G (48,000-84,000 IU/kg, Green cross, Korea) every 7 days for three or four weeks. All skin lesions were disappeared after Penicillin G treatment. In conclusion, a rabbits with skin lesions and serological test positive for syphilis should undergo prompt treatment and not be used for breeding.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the associated factors of self-reported dry mouth in adults. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 249 adults in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from June to October, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, age, monthly income, smoking, alcohol drinking, and systemic diseases including systemic diseases, medication, oral health status, and stress. The question for dry mouth consisted of dryness in skin, eyes, lips, and nasal mucosa. The subjective dry mouth consisted of 6 questions measured by visual analogue scale(VAS). Cronbach's alpha was 0.881 in the study. Oral health related quality of life (OHIP-14) was adapted from Yoon. The questionnaire for OHIP-14 included functional limitation, physical pain, psychological disability, social disability, and experience in hadicap measured by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.885 in the study. Data was analyzed for a t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis by using SPSS(SPSS 18.0, USA) program. Results: There were positive correlations between oral health-related quality of life and self-reported dry mouth (functional limitation r=0.288, physical pain r=0.219, psychological discomfort r=0.193, physical disability r=0.280, psychological disability r=0.205, social disability r=0.224 and handicap r=0.270). In the multiple regression analysis, variation of self-reported dry mouth were positively associated with dry eyes{very often(${\beta}=0.305$)), sometimes(${\beta}=0.186$)}, dryness on lips{very often(${\beta}=0.247$), sometimes(${\beta}=0.177$)}, handicap(${\beta}=0.152$), physical disability(${\beta}=0.128$) and alcohol drinking(1-2 times/week)(${\beta}=0.116$) (p<0.001). Conclusions: Self-reported dry mouth may cause deterioration of the entire body dryness(dryness on eyes and lips), low oral health-related quality of life(handicap and physical disability) and alcohol drinking. Thus, It is necessary to develop oral health education programs to prevent and manage dry mouth in adults.

  • Chemical burn on the oral mucosa is caused by contact with various chemical products and manifests with localized mucositis, keratotic white lesions, bleeding, and painful tissue surface due to the coagulation of the tissue. Policresulen ($Albothyl^{(R)}$) is a topical antiseptic, commonly used over-the-counter drug for vaginitis, thrush and stomatitis. This drug is highly acidic with pH 0.6, and can act as a strong corrosive agent to oral mucosa. When inadvertently used in oral cavity, it may cause chemical burns of oral mucosa, resulting necrosis and bleeding surface resembling to erythema multifome. A 56 years old female patient presented with the chief complaints of painful ulcerations on the tongue, the upper and lower lips. On intraoral examination, an erythromatous, erosive or ulcerative surface covered with inflammatory exudates or bleeding crust is observed on the anterior half of the tongue and the upper and lower lips. She has occasionally applied the policresulen solution topically on the tongue to relieve pain from recurrent focal glossitis for about 10 years. In this time she applied it broadly and repeatedly to the tongue, the upper and lower lips for the purpose of pain relief by herself without instruction by physician or dentist. After cessation of policresulen application, the oral mucosa was rapidly recovered with use of topical steroids. In 2 weeks the lesions subsided completely. In summary, inadvertent use of $Albothyl^{(R)}$ on oral mucosa may result in chemical burn, causing mucosal erosion, ulceration and inflammation. It can be recovered by topical use of corticosteroid for 2 weeks after cessation of using $Albothyl^{(R)}$.

  • Speech articulators are coordinated for the purpose of segmental constriction in terms of a task. In particular, vertical jaw movements repeatedly contribute to consonantal as well as vocalic constriction. The current study explores vertical jaw movements in conjunction with bilabial constriction in bilabial stop /p/ in the context /a/-to-/a/. Revisiting kinematic data of /p/ collected using the electromagenetic midsagittal articulometer (EMMA) method from seven (four female and three male) speakers of Seoul Korean, we examined maximum vertical jaw position, its relative timing with respect to the upper and lower lips, and lip aperture minima. The results of those dependent variables are recapitulated in terms of linguistic (different word boundaries) and paralinguistic (different speech rates) factors as follows. Firstly, maximum jaw height was lower in the across-word boundary condition (across-word < within-word), but it did not differ as a function of different speech rates (comfortable = fast). Secondly, more reduction in the lip aperture (LA) gesture occurred in fast rate, while word-boundary effects were absent. Thirdly, jaw raising was still in progress after the lips' positional extrema were achieved in the within-word condition, while the former was completed before the latter in the across-word condition. Lastly, relative temporal lags between the jaw and the lips (UL and LL) were more synchronous in fast rate, compared to comfortable rate. When these results are considered together, it is possible to posit that speakers are not tolerant of lenition to the extent that it is potentially realized as a labial approximant in either word-boundary condition while jaw height still manifested lower jaw position in the across-word boundary condition. Early termination of vertical jaw maxima before vertical lower lip maxima across-word condition may be partly responsible for the spatial reduction of jaw raising movements. This may come about as a consequence of an excessive number of factors (e.g., upper lip height (UH), lower lip height (LH), jaw angle (JA)) for the representation of a vector with two degrees of freedom (x, y) engaged in a gesture-based task (e.g., lip aperture (LA)). In the task-dynamic application toolkit, the jaw angle parameter can be assigned numerical values for greater weight in the across-word boundary condition, which in turn gives rise to lower jaw position. Speech rate-dependent spatial reduction in lip aperture may be able to be resolved by means of manipulating activation time of an active tract variable in the gestural score level.

  • Lips have a defect in maintenance of moisture due to their thin layer. As aging progresses, lips lose volume and redness, and become wrinkled. Fat grafting and filler surgery have been used to achieve attractive lips, but little research has been reported to develop better materials to replace the present methods. Recently, a study suggests that the increase of adipocyte number can be enhancing the expansion endogenous fat. In previous study, we identified that the efficacy of Magnolia officinalis bark extract (MOBE) was effective on the induction of adipogenic differentiation. In this study, we confirmed that MOBE enhanced the differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells on the fat mimic 3D structure built by 3D bioprinting method From further experiments in human, we established a method to quantify the severity of lip wrinkle by measurement of standard deviation of gray value using Image J software. Finally, we found that topical treatment with 1% MOBE formulated lip balm significantly improved the lip wrinkle after using for 12 weeks. In conclusion, these findings suggest that MOBE has great potential, as a cosmetic ingredient, to reduce the lip wrinkle through the effect of promoting adipogenic differentiation.

  • The aim of this study was proceed for 6weeks to determine the effect of middle-aged women's upper lips ms by SUKI programs. A total of 20 subjects were tested, and the SUKI arbitration programs of Pattern T1, Pattern T2, Pattern T3, Pattern T4 were adopted three times a week in six weeks. The results were as this. It showed a significant difference in the EG, although some of the intra-group comparisons of the upper lip ms. Therefore, SUKI programs have been shown to help improve the elasticity of the upper lip ms(p<.05). In this study, the SUKI program was used based on the fact that although limited, the elasticity of the upper lip ms, located in the facial part of a middle-aged woman, causes various wrinkles around her mouth, making them lose confidence in their appearance. This also suggests that normal facial ms can affect the appearance of the female middle-aged woman, and it was intended to suggest some ways to manage the appearance by proper management of facial muscle according to the life cycle of the female middle-aged woman. In conclusion, we hope that in the future, various experiments will be used as new research data on how to prevent women's facial skin beauty and wrinkles and help improve elasticity of facial muscles around the mouth.
