  • Objectives: Though overt thyroid dysfunction is well recognized to affect serum lipid profiles and obesity, there are conflicting reports on the effect of subclinical hypothyroidism on serum lipid profiles and obesity. In most reports, the definition of the upper normal limit of serum thyroid stimulation hormone (TSH) of 4.0${\sim}$5.0mU/L has been used to diagnose. However, recent studies have suggested a much lower TSH cut off with an upper limit of 2.5mU/L, because >95% of rigorously screened normal euthyroid volunteers had serum TSH values between 0.4 and 2.5mU/L. Therefore we defined subclinical hypothyroidism as a TSH level greater than 2.5mU/L. We sought to evaluate the correlations of subclinical hypothyroidism with obesity index and serum lipid profiles Methods: TSH levels were measured in 6190 men and 4223 women that participated in health examination and free T4, lipid profiles (total-cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-C), and obesity index (body mass index, body fat, waist circumference, C-reactive protein) were also measured. Results: There were significant differences of triglyceride between subclinical hypothyroidism men and normal control subjects. In women, there were also significant differences of triglyceride and LDL-C between subclinical hypothyroidism and normal control subjects. Subclinical hypothyroidism women showed significant correlations of TSH with total cholesterol, LDL-C, triglyceride, and C-reactive protein. Subclinical hypothyroidism men and women with a TSH level 2.5${\sim}$4.0mU/L had significant differences of triglyceride and body fat. In men, there were significant differences of waist circumference andC-reactive protein. In women, there were significant differences of LDL-C. Conclusions: We have demonstrated correlations of subclinical hypothyroidism with serum lipid profiles and obesity index. These findings suggested that subclinical hypothyroidism people had an increased risk of dyslipidemia and obesity. Subclinical hypothyroidism people with a TSH level 2.5${\sim}$4.0mU/L may be also considered suspect since it may signal a case of evolving thyroid underactivity eligible to be prevented.

  • The purpose of this study was designed to observe the effects of the Prunus persica Batsch var. davidiana Max. hot-water extract on the improvement of the glucide and lipid metabolism in the serum of streptozotocin (STZ, 55, mg/kg B.W., I.P. injection)-induced diabetic rats(S.D. strain, male) fed the experimental diets for 5 weeks. Electrolyte(Na, K, Cl) concentration in serum were fairly reduced in the group BSP(basal diet+STZ+Prunus persica $5.0g\%$ extract) than in the STZ(I.P.)-induced diabetic rats group(group BSW, basal diet+STZ(I.P.)+water). Although there was no significant difference among the groups. Concentrations of free fatty acid and lipid peroxide in serum were significantly higher in the STZ-induced diabetic group(group BSW) and STZ+Prunus persica $5.0;g\%$ extract group(group BSP) than those in the control group(group BW, basal diet+water). However, the concentrations of free fatty acid and lipid peroxide in serum were remarkably reduced in the group BSP than those in the group BSW, The activity of creatine phophokinase In serum was significantly lower in the group BSP than in the group BSW However, the activity of LCAT in serum was increased in the group BSP(Prunus persica $5.0\;g\%$ hot-water extract administration group) than in the STZ-induced diabetic group(group BSW). The above results shows that Prunus persica Batsch var. davidiana Max. were effective on the improvement of the glucide and lipid metabolism in serum of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

  • This present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of 5 % chicory extract on serum glucose and lipid metabolism in diabetic rats treated with streptozotocin (STZ). The experimental subjects were divided into 4 groups. : No-fiber , cellulose, insulin, and chicorygroup. The animals were fed ad libitum each of the experimental diets for 4 weeks. The food intake and food efficiency ratio in chicory group was significantly higher than in no-fiber, cellulose, and inulin groups. The reduction of body weight was also significantly lower. The wet weights of cecum and cecal contents were significantly increased in rat fed chicory extract. Total glycated hemoglobin was significantly decreased by chicory extract feeding whereas serum total cholesterol . LDL-choelsterol, and HDL-choelsterol levels were significantly increased. But there were no differences between HDL-choesterol/total cholesterol ratios, LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios, and atherogenic index. After 10 -hour fast, the levels of hepatic triglyceride and phospholipid were significantly higher in the chicory group than any in other groups. These results indicated that chicory extract is an effective therapeutic regimen for control of metabolic deragements in diabetics.

  • The effect of low molecular alginates feeding on the cholesterol levels and fatty acid compositions of rat serum and liver lipid were investigated. After one week basal diet feeding, four week old Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed with water soluble and acid $\cdot$alkali soluble alginate extracted from sea mustard (Undaria pinnatifida) and giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera), and their low molecular alginates prepared by the HCl partial hydrolysis. The feeding efficiency of the alginate fed group was ranged in 0.37$\~$0.44, which was 0.03$\~$0.05 lower than that of the basal diet group. Also, there was much less increase of liver weight in the alginate fed group. The water soluble alginate showed more significant effect in reducing the total cholesterol, free cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid of serum and liver lipid than the acid$\cdot$alkali soluble alginate. The effect was much better with low molecular alginate (reducing effect by the low-molecularization : Water soluble alginate - serum lipid; total cholesterol $59\%$, free cholesterol $65\%$, LDL-cholesterol $96\%$, triglyceride $50\%$, and phospholipid $36\%$. liver lipid: total cholesterol $4\%$, free cholesterol $62\%$, LDL-cholesterol $44\%$, triglyceride $33\%$, and phospholipid $44\%$. acid$\cdot$alkali soluble alginate - serum lipid; total cholesterol $52\%$: free cholesterol $97\%$, LDL-cholesterol $78\%$ triglyceride $32\%$, and phospholipid $64\%$. liver lipid; total cholesterol $11\%$, free cholesterol $12\%$, LDL-cholesterol $10\%$, triglyceride $27\%$, and phospholipid $21\%$). The effect of low molecular alginate feeding on the fatty acid composition of serum and liver lipid reflects the remarkable increase of polyenoic acid, over $44\%$ in serum lipid and about $70\%$ in liver lipid, comparing to the cholesterol fed group. The overall results indicated that feeding of low molecular alginates improves physiological function of rats by changing the serum and liver lipid composition.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of chitosan and NOCC from different sources and of different molecular weights on lipid metabolism. Sprague-Dawley rats were blocked into 26 groups according to body weight, and were raised for 4 weeks. Cadmium chloride was given at the level of 0 or 400 ppm in diet. Various chitosan and NOCC sources were given at the level of 0%(w/w) of diet. Total serum cholesterol and serum triglyceride concentrations were little affected by chitosan and NOCC supplements. However, HDL-cholesterol concentration and HDL : total cholesterol ratio were increased , and liver lipid, cholesterol , and triglyceride concentration were decreased by chitosan and NOCC supplements. The cholesterol and lipid lowering activity depends on fiber sources(crab and shrimp); type (chitosan and NOCC); and molecular weight(low , medium , and high). Among cadmium-free groups, chitosan-fed groups showed greater activity than NOCC -fed groups in lowering cholesterol and lipid levels, and greater fecal excretion of lipids and bile acids. Crab chitosans were more effective in cholesterol and lipid lowering activity than shrimp chitosans. The group fed high molecular weight crab chitosan showed the highest fecal excretion of lipids and bile acids. This indicated that high molecular weight crab chitosan was most effective in interfering with cholesterol and lipid absorption.

  • Dietary habits and serum lipid composition of 80 hospitalized patients with cerebrovascular disease (CVD) were compared to those of normal subjects. CVD patients were significantly higher in BP, serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels and low4r in HDL-choelsterol which resulted in the higher ratio of serum chol/HDL-chol than normal. Patients were also lower in the relative amount of HDL fraction by electrophoresis but were higher in LDL fraction and the ratio of LDL/HDL . In Korean, the high levels of serum chol, TG and LDL with low level of HDL as well as high BP could be one of the important causing factors of CVD. However, dietary habits of patients were not significantly different from those of normal . There is a possibility that patients might have controlled their dietary habits after they realized the severeness of disease.

  • This study investigated the effects of Platycodon grandiflorum aqueous extract on lipid concentration of serum and liver in rats fed high cholesterol diet Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to three groups (control, low dose of extract, high dose of extract) for four weeks. The serum total cholesterol concentration was significantly lower in the low and high doses of extract groups than in the control group. There was a significant decrease in the free cholesterol, cholesterol ester, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides concentrations in serum, and the total cholesterol and the triglycerides contentin liver in the low and high doses of extract groups compared to the control group. When the serum phospholipid concentration was compared among the groups, it was significantly lower in high dose of extract group than in control and low dose of extract group. It can be postulated that Platycodon grandiflorum aqueous extract may possess substantial hypolipidemic properties in rats.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect on plasma levels of lipid and lipid peroxidation by administration of lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus) fermented Orostachys malacophyllus (FOM) in alcohol fed rats. Male Sprague-dawley rats were randomly divided into seven groups: normal diet group (N), alcohol treated group (C), 2.5% (w/w) or 5% (w/w) OM treated group (2.5OM, 5OM), 2.5% (w/w) or 5% (w/w) fermented OM treated group (2.5FOM, 5FOM) and silymarin treated group (SM) as a positive control. As a result of measuring serum total lipid, C group were increased total lipid, free fatty acid content and were decreased HDL-cholesterol content, but 5FOM group were significantly decreased lipid content and were increased HDL-cholesterol content and accordingly reduced the incidence of atherosclerosis. Serum total protein content was similarly measured in all groups and serum albumin content was decreased in alcohol feeding groups compared to the N group. The 5FOM group had significantly decreased liver and serum triglycerides compared to the C group. The TBARS content in the liver, serum, testis, kidney, spleen, and heart were slightly decreased in the 5FOM group compared to the C group and the 5FOM group had an increased glutathione concentration. The 5FOM treatment was showed analogous results to those of the SM treatment, suggesting that FOM is can improve the lipid profiles of alcohol-fed rats.
