  • Transducer for ultrasonic linear motor with the symmetric and anti-symmetric modes was studied. The ultrasonic liner motor consists of two Lngevin type piezoelectric vibrators that cross at right angles with each other in tip. In order to excite symmetric and anti-symmetric mode, the transducer must have a 90 degree phase difference of voltage. Therefore, the tip of transducer moves on an elliptical motion. In this paper, the finite element analysis was used. The ultrasonic motor was fabricated using the simulated result and the driving characteristics were measured.

  • Ultrasonic testing are far superior to other nondestructive tests for detecting the disbond interface which occurred in adhesive interface. However, a solid rocket motor consisting of a steel case, rubber insulation, liner, and propellant poses many difficulties for analyzing ultrasonic waves because of the superposition of reflected waves and large differences in acoustic impedance of various materials. Therefore, ultrasonic tests for detecting the disbond interface in solid rocket motor have been applied in very limited areas between the steel case and rubber insulation using an automatic C-scan system. The existing ultrasonic test cannot detect the disbond interface between the liner and propellant of a solid rocket motor because most of the ultrasonic waves are absorbed in the rubber material which has low acoustic impedance. This problem could be overcome by analyzing the resonance frequency from the frequency spectrum using the ultrasonic resonance method. In this paper, a new technique to detect the disbond interface between the liner and propellant using ultrasonic resonance characteristics is discussed in detail.

  • In this paper, a linear ultrasonic motor using piezoelectric ceramics was fabricated, and its operation characteristics were investigated. A linear ultrasonic motor using L$_1$-B$_4$model was composed of a stator and a rotor, and a stator was composed of piezoelectric ceramics and a elastic body. When applied frequency and voltage were 58.4kHz and 56V respectively, the feeding speed of the motor was 19.8 cm/s. A linear ultrasonic motor could be moved in left and right directions by the phase difference. Feeding speed and feeding force of a linear ultrasonic motor could be controlled by applied voltage. A linear ultrasonic motor had a droping torque-speed characteristic. The maximum efficiency of linear ultrasonic motor was 2.14%. Therefore, this linear ultrasonic motor can be expected to be used for a card-forwarding device, such as a card reader device and so on.

  • It is known that the adhesive interface testing of the rocket motor using the ultrasonic wave is superior to the other testing methods about the ability to economical detect the defects. But, the signal analysis of the ultrasonic wave takes a lot of time and efforts because the time interval of the transmitted pulse and the received pulse is too short to separate the reflected signals due to the multi-layers of the rocket motor. The ultrasonic testing of rocket motor have only applied to the automatic system about extremely limited areas like the debond in adhesive interface between the motor case and the insulator. In this study the new technique to detect the debond between the liner and the propellant using the property of the resonance and the lamb waves instead of the existing ultrasonic testing was described.

  • Ultrasonic inspection method is more profitable than X-ray radiographic inspection in cost and effect of defect detection such as debond, and it doesn't need special facilities. The method can also be a possible real time inspection with safety. This report explains the experiment and theoretical modeling analysis of the inspection methods of propellant/liner debond using ultrasonic multi-reflection in rocket motor. From the results, it is possible to detect the defect of propellant/liner debond and its signal is distinguishable with normal. And, it is approximately coincide with both experimental signal and modeling.

  • This research simulates the ultrasonic wave propagation in multi-layered media using generalized formular of system response function. We made the artificial defect specimen of a rocket motor and compared with experimental wave forms. The simulation results are coincide with measured waves and we found that the pulse echo method is able to detect unbond defect at liner-propellant interface.
