  • This study presents the prediction of propagated wave profiles using the wave information at a fixed point. The fixed points can be fixed in either space or time. Wave information based on the linear wave theory can be expressed by Fredholm integral equation of the first kinds. The discretized matrix equation is usually an ill-conditioned system. Tikhonov regularization was applied to the ill-conditioned system to overcome instability of the system. The regularization parameter is calculated by using the L-curve method. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results. The analysis of the numerical computation shows that the Tikhonov regularization method is useful.

  • Stress waves monitored on the surface of structures under various loading conditions can provide useful information on the structural health status. In this paper, stress waves are measured by several sensors when a steel beam is impacted by a ball drop. The sensors used include the piezo-electric film Sensor, the electrical strain gage, and the ultrasonic transducer, and special attention is given to the pieza film sensor. The wavelet transform is used for the time-frequency analysis of dispersive waves propagating in the beam. The velocities of the wave produced in the team due to the lateral impact is found to be frequency-dependent and identified as the flexural wave velocity based on the comparisons with the Timoshenko beam theory. A linear impact site identification method is developed using the flexural wave, and the impact sites of the beam can be accurately estimated by the piezo film sensors. It is found that the piezo film sensor is appropriate for sensing stress waves due to impact and for locating impact sites in the beam.

  • A study has been carried out on the instability of a conical liquid sheet by using the linear instability theory. Various analytical methods using the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability theory were tried to examine the wave growth on cylindrical liquid sheets. Cylinderical liquid sheets were extended to the case with the conical sheets. Perturbations due to tangential motion as well as longitudinal one were taken into account. And it was assumed the the breakup occurs when amplitude ratio exceeds exp(12), drop sizes were predicted only by theoretical approach. The predicted drop size agreed well with the measured Sauter mean diameter, $D_{32}$.

  • Experimental and theoretical studies on the air-assist coaxial atomizer have been continuously carried out for a long time. But now the importance of the theoretical study is tending to increase as with the development of computer. This study is concerned to the spray modelization, especially, the instability of the liquid jet surrounded by the air stream which flows with high velocity. To study the phenomena of the break up, we used the linear theory based on the classical Kelvin-Helmholtz theory for capillary wave at a simple interface and we investigated the variation of liquid core radius. As a result, we obtained that the drop diameter and the variation of the liquid core radius predicted by using our model are reasonable.

  • In the paper, we study questions on classical solvability of nonlocal problems for a third-order linear hyperbolic equation in a rectangular domain. The Riemann method is applied to the Goursat problem and solution is obtained in the integral form. Investigated problems are reduced to the uniquely solvable Volterra-type equation of second kind. Influence effects of coefficients at lowest derivatives on correctness of studied problems are detected.

  • Hydrodynamic analysis of a surface-piercing body with an open chamber was performed with incident regular waves and forced-heaving body motions. The floating body was simulated in the time domain using a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) technique based on potential theory. This paper focuses on the hydrodynamic behavior of the free surfaces inside the chamber for various input conditions, including a two-input system: both incident wave profiles and forced body velocities were implemented in order to calculate the maximum surface elevations for the respective inputs and evaluate their interactions. An appropriate equivalent linear or quadratic viscous damping coefficient, which was selected from experimental data, was employed on the free surface boundary inside the chamber to account for the viscous energy loss on the system. Then a comprehensive parametric study was performed to investigate the nonlinear behavior of the wave-body interaction.

  • This study discusses the wave transformation(wave reflection and transmission) by a impermeable submerged breakwater with one ray, and integrated horizontal wave pressure acting on the structure. Numerical method in this study is based on the simplified eigenfunction expansion method and linear wave theory. Although this method is very simple, the results give good agreement with the one of the strict eigenfunciton expansion method, especially, in case that the crown width of the submerged breakwater becomes longer and its crown water depth shallower. Therefore, it is concluded that this simplified method is one good method in planning coastal structures as like the submerged breakwater in this study, and computing their wave transformations.

  • The wave load and its influence on the response of offshore structure have been well investigated through the statistical approach based on the linear theory. The linear approach has a limitation to apply the extreme condition such as freak wave, which corresponds to extreme value of wave spectrum. The main topic of present study is to develop an efficient numerical method to predict wave load induced by extreme wave. As a numerical method, finite element method based on variational principle is adopted. The frequency-focusing method is applied to generate the extreme wave in the numerical wave tank. The wave load on the bottom mounted vertical cylinder is investigated. The hydroelastic response of the vertical cylinder is also investigated so as to compare the wave loads with the rigid body case in the extreme wave condition.
