  • Drones are increasingly being used to investigate disaster damage because they can quickly capture images in the air. It is necessary to extract the damaged area by registering the drones and the existing ortho-images in order to investigate the disaster damage. In this process, we might be faced the problem of registering two images with different time and spatial resolution. In order to solve this problem, we propose a new methodology that performs initial image transformation using line pairs extracted from images and association matrix, and final registration of images using linear features to refine the initial transformed result. The applicability of the newly proposed methodology in this study was evaluated through experiments using artifacts and the natural terrain areas. Experimental results showed that the root mean square error of artifacts and the natural terrain was 1.29 pixels and 4.12 pixels, respectively, and relatively high accuracy was obtained in the region with artifacts extracted a lot of linear information.

  • We investigate time-temperature superposition from the viewpoint of geometry. The arc length of viscoelastic plots provides powerful resolution for check of the validity of time-temperature superposition. We also suggest a new algorithm for determination of shift factor which is base on the minimization of the total arc length and does not assume any functional form of viscoelastic function.

  • The ReLU(Rectified Linear Unit) function has been dominantly used as a standard activation function in most deep artificial neural network models since it was proposed. Later, Leaky ReLU, Swish, and Mish activation functions were presented to replace ReLU, which showed improved performance over existing ReLU function in image classification task. Therefore, we recognized the need to experiment with whether performance improvements could be achieved by replacing the RELU with other activation functions in the super resolution task. In this paper, the performance was compared by changing the activation functions in EDSR model, which showed stable performance in the super resolution task. As a result, in experiments conducted with changing the activation function of EDSR, when the resolution was converted to double, the existing activation function, ReLU, showed similar or higher performance than the other activation functions used in the experiment. When the resolution was converted to four times, Leaky ReLU and Swish function showed slightly improved performance over ReLU. PSNR and SSIM, which can quantitatively evaluate the quality of images, were able to identify average performance improvements of 0.06%, 0.05% when using Leaky ReLU, and average performance improvements of 0.06% and 0.03% when using Swish. When the resolution is converted to eight times, the Mish function shows a slight average performance improvement over the ReLU. Using Mish, PSNR and SSIM were able to identify an average of 0.06% and 0.02% performance improvement over the RELU. In conclusion, Leaky ReLU and Swish showed improved performance compared to ReLU for super resolution that converts resolution four times and Mish showed improved performance compared to ReLU for super resolution that converts resolution eight times. In future study, we should conduct comparative experiments to replace activation functions with Leaky ReLU, Swish and Mish to improve performance in other super resolution models.

  • In this paper, we say the adaptive shading correction system supporting multi-resolution for mobile camera. The shading effect is caused by non-uniform illumination, non-uniform camera sensitivity, or even dirt and dust on glass (lens) surfaces. In general this shading effect is undesirable [1-3]. Eliminating it is frequently necessary for subsequent processing and especially when quantitative microscopy is the fine goal. The proposed system is available on thirty nine kinds of image resolutions scanned by interlaced and progressive type. Moreover, the system is using forty kinds of continuous quadratic equations instead of using the piece-wise linear curve which is composed of multiple line segments. Finally, the system could correct the shading effect without discontinuity in any image resolution. The proposed system is implemented in VLSI with cell library based on Hynix $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS technology.

  • Frequency spectrum using the conventional Fourier analysis gives adequate information about the dynamic characteristics of the slider air bearing for the linear and stationary cases. The intermittent contacts for the extremely low flying height, however, generate nonlinear and nonstationary vibration at the instant of contact. Nonlinear dynamic model should be developed to simulate the impulse response of the air bearing during slider-disk contact. Time-frequency analysis is widely used to investigate the nonstationary signal. Several time-frequency analysis methods are employed and compared for the slider vibration signal caused by the impact against an artificially induced scratch on the disk. The representative Wigner-Ville distribution leads to the severe interference problem by cross terms even though it gives good resolution both in time and frequency. The smoothing process improves the interference problem at the expense of resolution. In order to get the results with good resolution and little interference, the reassignment method is proposed. Among others the reassigned Gabor spectrogram shows the best resolution and readability with negligible interference.

  • This paper presents an improved method for high-resolution rotor position estimation in the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives with low-resolution Hall-effect sensors. The proposed method adopts a gain-scheduled full-order speed observer. Since the quantized position signal, which is obtained from Hall-effect sensors, is basically used as the input of the observer, the sixth-order harmonics are essentially included in the estimated position. To eliminate the harmonic components, the quantized position is linearized by a linear extrapolation based on the estimated average speed and futhermore the speed-depentent observer gain scheduling strategy is developed. The observer gain is also scheduled by considering the motor acceleration to improve the dynamic performance according to the changes of the motor speed and load. Several experiments are performed for 800W PMSM drive and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • A system for fine-resolution long-range weather forecast is introduced in this study. The system is basically consisted of a global-scale coupled general circulation model (CGCM) and Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) regional model. The system makes use of a data assimilation method in order to reduce the initial shock or drift that occurs at the beginning of coupling due to imbalance between model dynamics and observed initial condition. The long-range predictions are produced in the system based on a non-linear ensemble method. At the same time, the model bias are eliminated by estimating the difference between hindcast model climate and observation. In this research, the predictability of the forecast system is studied, and it is illustrated that the system can be effectively used for the high resolution long-term weather prediction. Also, using the system, fine-resolution climatological data has been produced with high degree of accuracy. It is proved that the production of agrometeorological variables that are not intensively observed are also possible.

  • Although stationary inverse-geometry digital tomosynthesis (s-IGDT) is able to reduce motion artifacts, image acquisition time and radiation dose, the image quality of the s-IGDT is degraded due to the truncations arisen in projections. Therefore, the effects of geometric and image acquisition conditions in the s-IGDT should be analyzed for improving the image quality and clinical applicability of the s-IGDT system. In this study, the s-IGDT images were obtained with the various X-ray source arrangement types and the various number of projections. The resolution and noise characteristics of the obtained s-IGDT images were evaluated, and the characteristics were compared with those of the conventional DT images. The s-IGDT system using linear X-ray source arrangement and 40 projections maximized the image characteristics of resolution and noise, and the corresponding system was superior to the conventional DT system in terms of image resolution. In conclusion, we expect that the s-IGDT system can be used for providing medical images in diagnosis.
