A semi-active acceleration-based control for seismically excited civil structures including control input impulses

  • Structural acceleration regulation is a means of managing structural response energy and enhancing the performance of civil structures undergoing large seismic events. A quadratic output regulator that minimizes a measure including the total structural acceleration energy is developed and tested on a realistic non-linear, semi-active structural control case study. Suites of large scaled earthquakes are used to statistically quantify the impact of this type of control in terms of changes in the statistical distribution of controlled structural response. This approach includes the impulses due to control inputs and is shown to be more effective than a typical displacement focused control approach, by providing equivalent or better performance in terms of displacement and hysteretic energy reductions, while also significantly reducing peak story accelerations and the associated damage and occupant injury. For earthquake engineers faced with the dilemma of balancing displacement and acceleration demands this control approach can significantly reduce that concern, reducing structural damage and improving occupant safety.

  • This paper proposes a new linear robust state feedback controller for the linear discrete time systems which have uncertainties in the state and input matrices. The uncertainties need not satisfy the matching conditions, but only their bounds are needed to be known. The proposed controller is derived from the linear quadratic game problem, which solution is obtained via the modified algebraic Riccati equation. The controller guarantees the robust performance bound. The bound of the solution and the condition of the uncertainties, which can stabilize the uncertain system are explored.

  • In this paper, new approaches to optimal controller design for a class of discrete-time Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems are proposed based on a relaxed approach, in which non-quadratic Lyapunov function and non-parallel distributed compensation (PDC) control law are used. New relaxed conditions and linear matrix inequality (LMI) based design methods are proposed that allow outperforming previous results found in the literature. Finally, an example is given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approaches.

  • This paper copes with control design for unmanned aerial vehicle transportation system. Moving pendulum dynamics of slung-load system is derived using two methods: Udwadia-Kalaba equation and Newtonian approach. PID controller is applied to Udwadia-Kalaba equation model for structural consistency and linear quadratic Gaussian / Loop Transfer Recovery (LQG/LTR) technique is employed for Newtonian model with minimal state-space realization. Characteristics of PID and LQG/LTR controller are compared, and two controllers are combined to compensate the drawbacks of each other. Numerical simulation is set for two cases and conducted to evaluate performance of designed controllers. The result proves that combination of LQG/LTR and PID control performs stable and robust.

  • In this paper, we propose a linear quadratic regulator(LQR) controller design for the active suspension using evolution strategy(ES) and neural network. We can improve the inherent suspension problem, the trade-off between ride quality and suspension travel by selecting appropriate weight in the LQR-objective function. Since any definite rules for selecting weights do not exist, we replace the designers trial-and-error method with ES that is an optimization algorithm. Using the ES, we can find the proper control gains for selected frequencies, which have major effects on the vibrations of the vehicle. The relationship between the frequencies and proper control gains are generalized by use of the neural networks. When the vehicle is driven, the trained neural network is activated and provides the proper gains for operating frequencies. And we adopted double sky-hook control to protect car component when passing large bump. Effectiveness of our design has been shown compared to the conventional sky-hook controller through simulation studies.

  • This study proposes a new smart base isolation system that employs Magneto-Rheological Elastomers (MREs), a class of smart materials whose elastic modulus or stiffness can be varied depending on the magnitude of an applied magnetic field. It also evaluates the dynamic performance of the MRE-based isolation system in reducing vibrations in structures subject to various seismic excitations. As controllable stiffness elements, MREs can increase the dynamic control bandwidth of the isolation system, improving its vibration reduction capability. To study the effectiveness of the MRE-based isolation system, this paper compares its dynamic performance in reducing vibration responses of a base-isolated single-story structure (i.e., 2DOF) with that of a conventional base-isolation system. Moreover, two control algorithms (linear quadratic regulator (LQR)-based control and state-switched control) are considered for regulating the stiffness of MREs. The simulation results show that the MRE-based isolation system outperformed the conventional system in suppressing the maximum base drift, acceleration, and displacement of the structure.

  • An autopilot for the class of Bank-To-Turn missiles is developed using a multivariable plant model & control design methodology. The roll-pitch-yaw cross coupling is included in the design considerations. Feedback system is designed using the Linear Quadratic Gaussian with Loop Transfer Recovery (LQG/LTR). Nonlinear simulations are presented to demonstrate the performances of the designed system.

  • A new procedure is presented for optimally placing closed-loop poles of multivariable continuous-time systems in specified regions via linear-quadratic(LQ) state-feedback design. This method has the advantages of pole-placement and LQ-design. In addition, it provides minimum feedback gains in the control law.

  • In this paper, robust controllers which guarantee the stability and the quadratic performance in the presence of the state and the input matrix uncertainties are presented. Modified quadratic performance indices which include the model uncertainties are proposed for continuous and discrete time linear systems. And it is shown that the solution of the proposed optimal performance problem is the robust controller.

  • This paper considers a stochastic discrete algebraic Riccati equation, which is a generalized version of the well-known standard discrete algebraic Riccati equation, and has additional linear terms. Under controllability, observability and the assumption that the additional terms are not too large, the existence of a positive definite solution is guaranteed. It is shown that it arises in optimal control of a linear discrete-time system with multiplicative White noise and quadratic cost. A numerical example is given.
