We make a simple electrically controllable linear polarization rotator over $360^{\circ}$ without loss by using a thick ECB(electrically controlled birefringence) liquid crystal cell and a quarter wave plate at 514.5 nm wavelength. Its operating principle can be analyzed and explained by using simple polarization analysis and experimental data. We demonstrate that the degree of polarization of the rotator is 0.964 and the temporal variation for 1 week lies within ${\pm}1$ degree. We can easily solve the problem of nonlinearity of the dependence of the rotational angle of linear polarization on the applied voltage by changing the utilized voltage range or its fitting curve.
The materials failure relation $\ddot{\Omega}=A{(\dot{\Omega})}^\alpha$ where $\Omega$ is a measurable quantity such as displacement and the dot superscript is the time derivative, may be used to analyze the accelerating creep of materials. Coefficients, A and $\alpha$, are determined by fitting given data sets. In this study, it is tried to predict the failure time of tunnel using the materials failure relation. Four fitting techniques of applying the materials failure relation are attempted to forecast a failure time. Log velocity versus log acceleration technique, log time versus log velocity technique, inverse velocity technique are based on the linear least squares fits and non-linear least squares technique utilizes the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Since the log velocity versus log acceleration technique utilizes a logarithmic representation of the materials failure relation, it indicates the suitability of the materials failure relation applied to predict a failure time of tunnel. A linear correlation between log velocity and log acceleration appears satisfactory(R=0.84) and this represents that the materials failure relation is a suitable model for predicting a failure time of tunnel. Through comparing the real failure time of tunnel with the predicted failure times from four curve fittings, it is shown that the log time versus log velocity technique results in the best prediction.
The generalized Hoek-Brown (GHB) failure criterion developed by Hoek et al. (2002) is a nonlinear function which defines a stress condition at failure of rock mass. The relevant strength parameter values are systematically determined using the GSI value. Since GSI index is a value quantifying the condition of in-situ rock mass, the GHB criterion is a practical failure condition which can take into the consideration of in-situ rock mass quality. Considering that most rock mechanics engineers are familiar with the linear Mohr-Coulomb criterion and that many rock engineering softwares incorporate Mohr-Coulomb criterion, the equations for the equivalent friction angle and cohesion were also proposed along with the release of the GHB criterion. The proposed equations, however, fix the lower limit of the minor principal stress range, where the linear best-fitting is performed, with the tensile strength of the rock mass. Therefore, if the tensile stress is not expected in the domain of analysis, the calculated equivalent friction angle and cohesion based on the equations in Hoek et al. (2002) could be less accurate. In order to overcome this disadvantage of the existing equations for equivalent friction angle and cohesion, this study proposes the analytical formula which can calculate optimal equivalent friction angle and cohesion in any minor principal stress interval, and verified the accuracy of the derived formula.
We obtained precise linear transverse displacements from the results of signal processing on moire fringes measured by the superposition of a fixed self-imaging elongated circular(EC) grating and a moved EC grating. The linear displacement less than one pitch of the moving EC grating was calculated from the position of a bright moire fringe generated on the linear grating part of the EC gratings. The moire signals were high-frequency-filtered, smoothed, curve-fitted, and first-differentiated moire signals in sequence. Also the linear displacement created by movement by the unit of integer times of a pitch was readily measured by the count of the even number of zero-crossing points corresponding to bright moire fringes obtained by the above same processing without curve fitting. Then we can measure linear transverse displacements with the accuracy of better than 3 %, which are more accurate values than those by the traditional visual method within the displacement of 80 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

Digital Tolansky interferometer which is Tolansky interferometer interfaced to the computer through CCD TV-camera, is developed and applied to the surface topography. First, resolution of this system is determined by minimum measurable thickness of thin film. Theoretical analysis and experimenatal results are compared. Second, surface topographic picture of thin is obtained by two orthogonal fringes. Using linear fitting method, height distribution of specimen is obtained and 3-dim. picture is plotted.

This paper deals with wafer temperature uniformity control essential in rapid thermal processing (RTP). One of the important control objectives of RTP is to keep the temperature over the wafer surface as uniformly as possible. For this, a discrete time state equation around the operating point is first identified by using the subspace fitting method, and a multivariable LQG(Linear Quadratic Gaussian) controller is designed based on the identified model. Simulation and experimental results show improvement in temperature uniformity over the conventional PID method.
The spectra of 31 Cygni were taken at the Asiage Observatory in Italy. Reduction was made using the 2nd and 4th order non-linear least square method. Spectral lines which were relatively sharp or strong were identified within the wavelength regions from 3800 to 5100$AA$. Radial velocities and equivalent widths were calculated from the Gaussian Fitting Method for this star. The measured mean radial velocity of 31 Cygni is + 0.5km/sec.
We propose a model which is useful for the analysis of the spatial time series data. The proposed model utilized the linear dependences across the spatial units as well as over time. Three stage model fitting procedures are suggested and the real data is analyzed.
