Comparison of Snow Cover Fraction Functions to Estimate Snow Depth of South Korea from MODIS Imagery

  • Estimation of snow depth using optical image is conducted by using correlation with Snow Cover Fraction (SCF). Various algorithms have been proposed for the estimation of snow cover fraction based on Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI). In this study we tested linear, quadratic, and exponential equations for the generation of snow cover fraction maps using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua satellite in order to evaluate their applicability to the complex terrain of South Korea and to search for improvements to the estimation of snow depth on this landscape. The results were validated by comparison with in-situ snowfall data from weather stations, with Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) calculated as 3.43, 2.37, and 3.99 cm for the linear, quadratic, and exponential approaches, respectively. Although quadratic results showed the best RMSE, this was due to the limitations of the data used in the study; there are few number of in-situ data recorded on the station at the time of image acquisition and even the data is mostly recorded on low snowfall. So, we conclude that linear-based algorithms are better suited for use in South Korea. However, in the case of using the linear equation, the SCF with a negative value can be calculated, so it should be corrected. Since the coefficients of the equation are not optimized for this area, further regression analysis is needed. In addition, if more variables such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land cover, etc. are considered, it could be possible that estimation of national-scale snow depth with higher accuracy.

  • This paper is concerned with Accuracy Design of LM Guide System in Machine Tools. Elastic deformation of bearing is calculated by Hertz contact theory and motion error of LM block is analyzed. A new algorithm using block stiffness is proposed fur the analysis of motion accuracy of the table. The best advantage of this algorithm is fast analysis speed because it isn't necessary iteration processes for satisfying equilibrium equation of the table. Motion errors of the table analyzed under artificial form error of rail theoretically and experimentally. Only one of two rails is bent by putting a thickness gauge into horizontal direction. This form error of rail is measured by gap sensor against the other rail. Then, motion errors of the table are predicted by proposed new algorithm theoretically and measured by laser interferometer. Measurements are carried out by changing the preload and thickness. The results show that the table motion errors are reduced from 1/2 to 1/60 times than form error of rail according to its height and width. And the effect of preloading is almost negligible.

  • The modal parameter estimations of linear multi-degree-of-freedom structural dynamic systems are carried out in time domain. For this purpose, the equation of motion is transformed into the auto regressive and moving average model with auxiliary stochastic input(ARMAX) model. The parameters of the ARMAX model are estimated by using the sequential prediction error method. Then the modal parameters of the system are obtained thereafter. Experimental results are given for a 3-story budding model subject to ground exitations.

  • In this paper, we transformed the bilinear filter into an equivalent linear multichannel filter and derived QR decomposition based recursive least squares algorithms for bilinear lattice filters. We also defined order update relation of the forward and the backward input vectors by using the channel decomposition. The forward and the backward data matrices were defined by using the forward and the backward input vectors and orthogonalized with the QR decomposition. we can obtain the lattice equations of the bilinear filters by using the channel decomposition. we can be derived the lattice equations of the bilinear filters using this decomposition process which are the same as the lattice equations derived by Baik, we can use the coefficient transformation algorithm proposed by Baik. We derived the equation error and the output error algorithm of the QRD based RLS bilinear lattice algorithm. Also, we evaluated the performance of the proposed algorithms through the system identification of the bilinear system.

  • This paper deals with the transfer alignment problem of SDINS(StrapDown Inertial Navigation System) subjected to roll and pitch motions of the ship. Specifically, to reduce alignment errors induced by measurement time-delay and ship body flexure, an error compensation method is suggested based on delay state augmentation and DCM(Direction Cosine Matrix) partial matching. A linearized error model for the velocity and attitude matching transfer alignment system is first derived by linearizing the nonlinear measurement equation with respect to its time delay and augmenting the delay state into the conventional linear state equations. And then DCM partial matching is properly combined to reduce effects of a ship's Y axis flexure. The simulation results show that the suggested method is effective enough resulting in considerably less azimuth alignment errors.

  • Conventional adaptive speed estimators cannot avoid the influence of the non-linear inductance variation under the saturation conditions. Without speed sensors, it is difficult to identify the inductance variation using a reactive power mode because the model contains a term of the rotor speed. In this paper, we propose a novel speed estimator having hybrid architecture in order to estimate both the rotor speed and the inductance variation simultaneously when the motor flux is saturated. Proposed estimator consists of the error between the flux obtained from the stator voltage equation and the flux estimated from the rotor flux observer. Introducing a new correction term into the estimator increases the estimation ability of the conventional speed estimator even though the motor flux is saturated. The convergence of the speed estimation error is examined by simulation Furthermore, the experimental results show the validity of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we develop the system which inspects the metal mask using area scan camera and belu type xy-table and introduce its inspection algorithm. Thes whole area of the metal mask is divides into several inspection block and the sixe of a inspection block is decided by FOV(Field of View). To compare with the camera image of each block, the reference image is made by gerber file.   • In this paper we develop a now procedure to control stepsize for linear multistep methods applied to semi-explicit index 1 differential-algebraic equations. in contrast to the standard approach the error control mechanism presented here is based on monitoring and contolling both the local and global errors of multistep formulas. As a result such methods with the local-global stepsize control solve differential-algebraic equation with any prescribed accuracy (up to round-off errors). For implicit multistep methods we give the minimum number of both full and modified Newton iterations allowing the iterative approxima-tions to be correctly used in the procedure of the local-global stepsize control. We also discuss validity of simple iterations for high accuracy solving differential-algebraic equations. Numerical tests support the the-oretical results of the paper.

  • This paper describes a model reference adaptive system(MRAS) for speed control of vector-controlled induction motor without a speed sensor. The proposed approach is based on observing the instantaneous torque. The real torque is calculated by sensing stator current and estimated torque is calculated by stator current that is calculated by using estimated rotor speed. The speed estimation error is linearly proportional to error between real torque and estimated torque. The proposed feedback loop has linear component. Furthermore proposed method is robust to parameters variation. The effectiveness is verified by equation and simulation

  • A dB-linearity improved variable gain amplifier (VGA) for GPS receiver is presented. The Proposed dB-linear current generator has improved dB-linearity error of ${\pm}0.15$dB. The VGA for GPS is designed using proposed dB-linear current generator and composed of 3 stage amplifiers. The IF frequency is assumed as 4MHz and the linearity requirement of the VGA for GPS receiver is defined as 24dBm of IIP3 using cascaded IIP3 equation and the VGA satisfies 24dBm when minimum gain mode. The DC-offset voltage is eliminated using DC-offset cancelation loop. The gain range is from -8dB to 52dB and the dB-linearity error satisfies ${\pm}0.2$dB. The 3-dB frequency has range of 35MHz~106MHz for the gain range. The VGA is designed using 0.18${\mu}m$ CMOS process. The power consumption is 3mW with 1.8V supply voltage.
