  • Dynamic and static analyses of existing structures are very important to obtain reliable information relating to actual structural properties. For this purpose a series of material test, dynamic test and static collapse test of the existing two brick chimneys, in Tokoname, are carried out. From the material tests, Young's modulus and compressive strength of the brick used for these chimneys are estimated to be 3200 MPa and 7.5 MPa, respectively. The results of static collapse test of the existing two brick chimneys are discussed in this paper and composed with the results from FEA (Finite Element analysis). From the results of dynamic tests, the fundamental frequencies of Howa and Iwata brick chimneys are estimated to be about 2.69 Hz and 2.93 Hz, respectively. Their natural modes are identified by ARMAV (Autoregressive Moving Average Vectors) model. On the basis of the static and dynamic experimental tests, a numerical model has been prepared. According to the European code (Eurocode n. 8: "Design of structures for earthquake resistance") non-linear static (Pushover) analysis of the two chimneys is carried out and they seem to be vulnerable to earthquakes with 0.25 to 0.35 g.

  • Algeria is a country with a high seismic activity. During the last decade, many destructive earthquakes occurred, particularly in the northern part, causing enormous losses in human lives, buildings and equipments. In order to reduce this risk in the capital and avoid serious damages to the strategic existing buildings, the government decided to invest into seismic upgrade, strengthening and retrofitting of these buildings. In doing so, seismic vulnerability study of this category of buildings has been considered. Structural analysis is performed on the basis of site investigation (inspection of the building, collecting data, materials, general conditions of the building, etc), and existing drawings (architectural plans, structural design, etc). The aim of these seismic vulnerability studies is to develop guidelines and a methodology for rehabilitation of existing buildings. This paper will provide insight to the vulnerability assessment and strengthening of the telecommunication centre, according to the new code RPA 99/version 2003. Both, static equivalent method and non linear dynamic analysis are performed in this study.

  • In this paper, a non-linear finite element formulation for the spatial cable-net structures is simulated and using this formulation, the characteristics of structural behaviors for the elastic catenary cable are examined In the simulating procedure for the elastic catenary cable, nodal forces and tangential stiffness matrices are derived using catenary parameters of the exact solutions by a governing differential equation of catenary cable, cable self-weights and unstressed cable length. Dynamic Relaxation Method that considers kinetic damping is used for the structure analysis and Newton Raphson Method is used to verify the accuracy of solutions. In the analysis of two dimensional cable, the results obtain from the elastic catenary elements are shown more accurate than does of truss elements and in the case of spatial cable-net structures, Dynamic Relaxation Method is more stable to be converged than Newton Raphson Method.

  • In this study optimal analysis of pipe network was performed using linear and non linear analysis method for complex real pipe network system of Mungyeong water purification field system which consists of 70 nodes and 86 elements. From the examination result of total flow which is distributed to each pipe, it is found that KYPIPE2 Model supplies less amount than NLAM. It is known that dynamic water level and pressure head of KYPIPE2 Model and NLAM are nearly in accordance with each other from each method of the pipe network analyses, and appeared that both methods of analysis shows high reliable result since the distribution of dynamic water level for every node is the short range of EL. 205.0m~EL. 210.0m besides the pressed dynamic water level. The analysis results of pressure in the methods of pipe network analysis for KYPIPE2 Model and NLAM are similar and it is satisfactory result that the pressure distributions of the tab water design criterion of 5.0kgf/cm$^2$ besides the small part of highland.

  • Ocean developments gradually move to deep-sea in the 21 century. A deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicle is one of important tools for ocean resource survey. A marine cable plays an important role for the safe operation of a deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicle. The first cable of a deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicle is excited by surface vessel motion and shows non-linear dynamic behaviors. A numerical method is necessary for analysing the dynamic behaviour of the first marine cable. In this study, a numerical program is estabilished based on a finite difference method. The program is appled to a 6000m long cable for a deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicle and shows good reasonable results.

  • In this paper some techniques for the dynamic analysis of non-classically damped linear systems are reviewed and compared. All these methods are based on a transformation of the governing equations using a basis of complex or real vectors. Complex and real vector bases are presented and compared. The complex vector basis is represented by the eigenvectors of the complex eigenproblem obtained considering the non-classical damping matrix of the system. The real vector basis is a set of Ritz vectors derived either as the undamped normal modes of vibration of the system, or by the load dependent vector algorithm (Lanczos vectors). In this latter case the vector basis includes the static correction concept. The rate of convergence of these bases, with reference to a parametric structural system subjected to a fixed spatial distribution of forces, is evaluated. To this aim two error norms are considered, the first based on the spatial distribution of the load and the second on the shear force at the base due to impulsive loading. It is shown that both error norms point out that the rate of convergence is strongly influenced by the spatial distribution of the applied forces.

  • This work addresses the optimization controller design problem combining the AI evolution bat (EB) optimization algorithm with a fuzzy controller in the practical application of a reinforced concrete frame structure. This article explores the use of an intelligent EB strategy to reduce the dynamic response of Lead Rubber Bearing (LRB) composite reinforced concrete frame structures. Recently developed control units for plant structures, such as hybrid systems and semi-active systems, have inherently non-linear properties. Therefore, it is necessary to develop non-linear control methods. Based on the relaxation method, the nonlinear structural system can be stabilized by properly adjusting the parameters. Therefore, the behavior of a closed-loop system can be accurately predicted by determining the behavior of a closed-loop system. The performance and durability of the proposed control method are demonstrated by numerical simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed method is a viable and feasible control strategy for seismically tuned composite reinforced concrete frame structures.

  • The reliable seismic stability evaluation of the natural slopes and geotechnical structures has become a critical factor of the design. Pseudo-static or permanent displacement methods are typically employed to evaluate the seismic slope performance. In both methods, the effect of input ground motion on the sliding surface is ignored, and failure surface from the limit equilibrium method is used. For the assessment of the seismic sensitivity of failure surface, two-dimensional non-linear finite element analyses are performed. The performance of the finite element model was validated against centrifuge measurements. A parametric study with a range of input ground motion was performed, and numerical results were used to assess the influence of ground motion characteristics on the sliding surface. Based on the results, it is demonstrated that the characteristics of input ground motion have a significant influence on the location of the seismically induce failure surface. In addition to dynamic analysis, pseudo-static analyses were performed to evaluate the discrepancy. It is observed that sliding surfaces developed from pseudo-static and dynamic analyses are different. The location of the failure surface change with the amplitude and Tm of motion. Therefore, it is recommended to determine failure surfaces from dynamic analysis

  • Modelling and analysis of a brick masonry building involves uncertainties like modelling assumptions and properties of local material. Therefore, it is necessary to perform a calibration to evaluate the dynamic properties of the structure. The response of the finite element model is improved by predicting the parameter by performing linear dynamic analysis on experimental data by comparing the acceleration. Further, a nonlinear dynamic analysis was also performed comparing the roof acceleration and damage pattern of the structure obtained analytically with the test findings. The roof accelerations obtained analytically were in good agreement with experimental roof accelerations. The damage patterns observed analytically after every shock were almost similar to that of experimental observations. Damage pattern with amplification in roof acceleration exhibit the potentiality of earthquake resistant measures in brick masonry models.

  • Identification method is formulated to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings under NFR (Near Field Recording) sliders. Using dynamic analysis, impulse responses and frequency response functions of NFR sliders are obtained on numerical non-linear models including rigid motion of slider and fluid motion of air bearing under the slider. System parameters are identified by modal analysis method and instrumental variable method. The identified system parameters of sliders are utilized to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of air bearings.
