A New Vibration Energy Harvester Using Magnetoelectric Transducer

  • Magnetoelectric (ME) transducers were originally intended for magnetic field sensors but have recently been used in vibration energy harvesting. In this paper, a new broadband vibration energy harvester has been designed and fabricated to be efficiently applicable over a range of source frequencies, which consists of two cantilever beams, two magnetoelectric (ME) transducers and a magnetic circuit. The effects of the structure parameters, such as the non-linear magnetic forces of the ME transducers and the magnetic field distribution of the magnetic circuit, are analyzed for achieving the optimal vibration energy harvesting performances. A prototype is fabricated and tested, and the experimental results on the performances show that the harvester has bandwidths of 5.6 Hz, and a maximum power of 0.25 mW under an acceleration of 0.2 g (with g = $9.8\;ms^2$).

  • An energy-efficient reference walking trajectory generation algorithm is suggested utilizing allowable ZMP (Zero-Moment-Point) region, which maxmizes the energy efficiency for cyclic gaits, based on three-dimensional LIPM (Linear Inverted Pendulum Model) for biped robots. As observed in natural human walking, variable ZMP manipulation is suggested, in which ZMP moves within the allowable region to reduce the joint stress (i.e., rapid acceleration and deceleration of body), and hence to reduce the consumed energy. In addition, opimization of footstep planning is conducted to decide the optimal step-length and body height for a given forward mean velocity to minimize a suitable energy performance - amount of energy required to carry a unit weight a unit distance. In this planning, in order to ensure physically realizable walking trajectory, we also considered geometrical constraints, ZMP stability condition, friction constraint, and yawing moment constraint. Simulations are performed with a 12-DOF 3D biped robot model to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The three-dimensional flow in a turbine nozzle guide vane passage causes large secondary loss through the passage and increased heat transfer on the blade surface. In order to reduce or control these secondary flows, a linear cascade with a contoured endwall configuration was used and changes in the three-dimensional flow field were analyzed and discussed. Measurements of secondary flow velocity and total pressure loss within the passage have been performed by means of five-hole probes. The investigation was carried out at fixed exit Reynolds number of $4.0{\times}10^5$. The objective of this study is to document the development of the three-dimensional flow in a turbine nozzle guide vane cascade with modified endwall. The results show that the development of passage vortex and cross flow in the cascade composed of one flat and one contoured endwalls are affected by the flow acceleration which occurs in contoured endwall side. The overall loss is reduced near the flat endwall rather than contoured endwall.

A Study on Entrance Length of Developing Transitional Steady Flows in a Square Duct (4각 덕트의 입구영역에서 천이 정상유동의 입구길이에 관한 연구)

  • In the present study, the entrance length, velocity profiles and waveforms of developing transitional steady flows in a square duct are investigated analytically and experimentally. The systems of conservation equations for transitional steady duct flows are solved analytically by linearizing non-linear convective terms and adoption of modified eddy viscosity from empirical correlations. Analytical solutions of velocity profiles for developing transitional steady flow were obtained in the form of infinite series. The experimental study for transitional steady flow in a square duct with $40mm{\times}40mm{\times}4000mm$($width{\times}height{\times}length$) was carried out to measure velocity profiles and other parameters by using a hot-wire anemometer with data acquisition and processing system. The entrance length of developing transitional steady flows in a square duct was $L_e{\fallingdotseq}0.02{\cdot}Re,st{\cdot}D_h$, and the overshoot was occured at about 30 times of hydraulic diameter because of the effect of external velocity of boundary layer and instantaneous acceleration.

  • In this paper, a Kalman filter-based sensor fusion filter that measures posture by calibrating and combining information obtained from acceleration and gyro sensors was proposed. Recent advancements in sensor network technology have required sensor fusion technology. In the proposed approach, the nonlinear system model of the filter is converted to a linear system model through a Jacobian matrix operation, and the measurement value predicted via Euler integration. The proposed filter was implemented at an operating frequency of 74 MHz using a Virtex-6 FPGA Board from Xilinx Inc. Further, the accuracy and reliability of the measured posture were validated by comparing the values obtained using the implemented filters with those from existing filters.

  • We discuss the bi - stability that is possibly exhibited by a liquid free surface in a parametrically - driven two-dimensional (2D) rectangular tank with finite liquid depth. Following the method of adaptive mode ordering, assuming two dominant modes and retaining polynomial nonlinearities up to third-order, a nonlinear finite-dimensional nonlinear modal system approximation is obtained. A "continuation method" of nonlinear dynamics is then used in order to elicit efficiently the instability boundary in parameters' space and to predict how steady surface elevation changes as the frequency and/or the amplitude of excitation are varied. Results are compared against those of the linear version of the system (that is a Mathieu-type model) and furthermore, against an intermediate model also derived with formal mode ordering, that is based on a second - order ordinary differential equation having nonlinearities due to products of elevation with elevation velocity or acceleration. The investigation verifies that, in parameters space, there must be a region, inside the quiescent region, where liquid surface instability is exhibited. There, behaviour depends on initial conditions and a wave form would be realised only if the free surface was substantially disturbed initially.

Dynamic response of adjacent structures connected by friction damper

  • Dynamic response of two adjacent single degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structures connected with friction damper under base excitation is investigated. The base excitation is modeled as a stationary white-noise random process. As the force-deformation behavior of friction damper is non linear, the dynamic response of connected structures is obtained using the equivalent linearization technique. It is observed that there exists an optimum value of the limiting frictional force of the damper for which the mean square displacement and the mean square absolute acceleration responses of the connected structures attains the minimum value. The close form expressions for the optimum value of damper frictional force and corresponding mean square responses of the coupled undamped structures are derived. These expressions can be used for initial optimal design of the friction damper for connected structures. A parametric study is also carried out to investigate the influence of system parameters such as frequency ratio and mass ratio on the response of the coupled structures. It has been observed that the frequency ratio has significant effect on the performance of the friction damper, whereas the effects of mass ratio are marginal. Finally, the verification of the derived close from expressions is made by correlating the response of connected structures under real earthquake excitations.

Effect of Alumina Content on the Hot Corrosion of SiC by NaCl and Na2SO4 (NaCl과 Na$_2$SO$_4$에 의한 SiC 고온 부식에 미치는 Alumina 첨가량의 영향)

  • The specimens for the corrosion test were made by hot-pressing of SiC power with 2 wt% Nl2O3 and 10wt% Al2O3 additions at 200$0^{\circ}C$ and 205$0^{\circ}C$. The specimens were corroded in 37 mole% NaCl and 63 mole% Na2SO4 salt mixture at 100$0^{\circ}C$ up to 60 min. SiO2 layer was formed on SiC and then this oxide layer was dissolved by Na2O ion in the salt mixture. The rate of corrosion of the specimen containing 10 wt% Al2O3 was slower than that of the specimen containing 2 wt% Al2O3. This is due to the presence of continuous grain boundary phase in the specimen containing 10 wt% Al2O3. The oxidation of SiC produced gas bubbles at the SiC-SiO2 interface. The rate of corrosion follows a linear rate law up to 50 min. and then was accelerated. This acceleration is due to the disruption oxide layer by the gas evolution at SiC-SiO2 interface. Pitting corrosion has found at open pores and grain boundaries.

  • In this paper, an active vibration control system using a voice coil type linear oscillating actuator(LOA) is studied to suppress structural vibration. Being compared with a hydraulic actuator, a LOA has simplified structure and requires a few elements in the driving system, so it has lots of merits with respect to economics and maintenance. The general mathematical dynamic model to obtain the algorithm for the realization of vibration active control system is treated. Actually, the performance test of the control system using LOA is carried out on a steel test structure under sinusoidal and white noise excitation. From this test it is conformed that acceleration level of test structure is reduced near the resonance region. In the future research on the application to large structures will be studied.

  • Stabilization error of target aiming systems mounted on moving vehicles is an important performance because the error directly affects hit Probability. In a heavy load targetaiming system, the disturbance torque comes from mass unbalance and linear acceleration is a main source of stabilization error. This study suggests an experimental design method of disturbance feedforward compensation control to improve the stabilization performance of heavy load target aiming systems. The filtered_x least square(FxLMS) algorithm is used to estimate the compensator coefficients adaptively. The proposed control is applied to a simple experimental set-up which simulates dynamic characteristics of a real target aiming system. The feasibility of the proposedtechnique is illustrated, along with results of experiments.
