  • Vehicle routing problem is known to be a NP-hard problem, and is traditionally solved by some heuristic approaches. This paper investigates the application of the computer method COMSOAL to the optimal vehicle routing selection problem. The COMSOAL (Computer Method of Sequencing Operations for Assembly Lines) is a computer heuristic originally developed to solve an assembly line balancing problem a few decades ago. The solution methodology of repeatedly running COMSOAL will result in many feasible solutions from which the best is chosen. This solution approach now becomes viable thanks to the significantly increased speed of recent computer technology. This paper discusses the adaptation of the COMSOAL approach to the known set of simple vehicle routing example problem. The results show that the COMSOAL can be a good possible approach to solve the vehicle routing problem.

Hardware Implementation of a Neural Network Controller with an MCU and an FPGA for Nonlinear Systems

  • This paper presents the hardware implementation of a neural network controller for a nonlinear system with a micro-controller unit (MCU) and a field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip. As an on-line learning algorithm of a neural network, the reference compensation technique has been implemented on an MCU, while PID controllers with other functions such as counters and PWM generators are implemented on an FPGA chip. Interface between an MCU and a field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip has been developed to complete hardware implementation of a neural controller. The developed neural control hardware has been tested for balancing the inverted pendulum while controlling a desired trajectory of a cart as a nonlinear system.

  • To minimize makespan for preemptive sequence dependent job scheduling with parallel identical processors, fundamental results, as the basis of new algorithm to be presented, such as McNauton's algorithm for independent jobs, Hu's characterization for dependent jobs, and Muntz-Coffman's algorithm, were first introduced. Then a huristic procedure was presented applying those concepts of zoning of assembly line balancing and of resource leveling on CPM network scheduling with two or more of parallel machines in general. New procedure has eliminated presumative machine assignment using ${\rho}$, rate of resource capability (${\rho}$ < 1), for practical scheduling.

  • The problem of constrained sequencing of a set of jobs on a conveyor system with the objective of minimizing setup cost is investigated in this paper. A setup cost is associated with extra material, labor, or energy required due to the change of attributes in consecutive jobs at processing stations. A finite set of attributes is considered in this research. Sequencing is constrained by the availability of conveyor junctions. The problem is motivated by the paint purge reduction problem at a major U.S. automotive manufacturer. We first model a diverging junction with a sequence-independent setup cost and predefined attributes as an assignment problem and this model is then extended for a more general situation by relaxing the initial assumptions in various ways.

  • Three-level diode clamped multilevel inverter, generally known as neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter, has an inherent problem causing neutral point (NP) potential variation. Until now, the NP potential problem of variation has been investigated and lots of solutions have also been proposed. This paper presents a neutral point voltage control technology using the anti-windup PI controller and offset technology of PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) to control the variation of NPC 3-phase three-level inverter neutral point voltage. And the proposed algorithm is tested and verified using a PLL (Phase Locked Loop) in order to synchronize the phase voltage from the line voltage of grid. It significantly improves the voltage balancing under a solar fluctuation conditions of the inverter. Experimental results show the good performance and effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Distributed Flexible AC Transmission System(D-FACTS) was proposed as a solution for weakness of FACTS device s. The D-FACTS device DSSC(Distributed Static Series Co mpensator) can provide controllable reactance compensation in transmission line such as SSSC(Static Synchronous Series Compensator). This paper introduce the algorithm of reactive power injection on DSSC and propose the method of current balancing by reactive power injection. The proposed algorithm has been verified with simulation and experiment results.

  • This paper introduces a simulation model regarding the process analysis of a LED assembly process. The objective of the simulation model is to evaluate the performance of various design aspects of process alternatives. To develop the simulation model, a time study is performed for each process. Next, by using ARENA, a simulation model is conducted based on the process analysis and the line balancing methodology. We found out several problems for the assembly process, and then suggest several alternatives to improve the system.

  • This Paper presents a heuristic algorithm for machine-part group formation considering part production information (Production volume, roution sequence, unit operation time, facility size) in cellular manufacturing logistics system. In general, factory space is restricted within limited size when cells are located. A twofold heuristic algorithm is developed for considering factory space restrictions of located cells. The first phase is a aggregation procedure to minimize inter cell movement for satisfactoring space restriction. The second phase is a rearrangement procedure to maximize line balancing efficiency between machines within the cell and non assigned machine during first phase. Numerical example is presented to verify the efficiency of proposed algorithm.

  • The Hybrid Safety Injection Tank is a passive safety injection system that enables the safety injection water to be injected into the reactor pressure vessel throughout all operating pressures by connecting the top of the SIT and the pressurizer(PZR). In this study, the condition for balancing the pressure between the Hybrid SIT and PZR was derived theoretically. The pressure balancing condition was set at the point where the velocity of the Hybrid SIT coolant injected into the Direct Vessel Injection(DVI) line was at or above zero. If the condition was derived from a pressure network for the Hybrid SIT, pressurizer, and reactor pressure vessel, the pressure difference between the pressurizer and SIT is less than 0.07 MPa.

  • This paper proposes embedded System of two wheeled inverted pendulum robot designed by model based design method, using MATLAB/SIMULINK and LEGO NXT Mindstorms. At first, stability and performance of controller is verified through modeling and simulation. After that direct conversion from simulation model to C code is carried and effectiveness of controller is experimentally verified. Two wheeled inverted pendulum robot has basic function about autonomous balancing control using principle of inverted pedulum and it is also possible to arrive at destination. In this paper, state feedback controller designed by quadratic optimal control method is used. And quadratic optimal control uses state feedback control gain K to minimize performance index function J. Because it is easy to find gain, this control method can be used in the controller of two wheeled inverted pendulum robot. This proposed robot system is experimentally verified with following performances - balancing control, disturbance rejection, remote control, line following and obstacle avoidance.
